CP: Yallop Plays in MLS

Canadian soccer coach dons boots for weekend MLS Legends game

TORONTO (CP) - Frank Yallop is no stranger to MLS all-star games, having played and coached in them.

So the Canadian national team coach is looking forward to returning to the MLS fray Saturday, this time as a member of the MLS World Legends in an exhibition game before the league's proper all-star contest (TV, 2 p.m. EDT). Yallop and the World Legends will take on the MLS USA Legends in what is being billed as a "Celebration Game" at RFK Stadium in Washington, D.C.

The Canadian coach has extensive ties to the U.S. circuit. He played for the Tampa Bay Mutiny from 1996 to 1998 after ending his career in England, eventually moving into coaching as an assistant first in Tampa Bay and then D.C. United.

From there he went to San Jose, leading the Earthquakes to two MLS titles in three seasons. He was named MLS coach of the year in 2003 before quitting to take over Canada.

At 40, Yallop is a little young to be a legend but he won't look out of place on the field Saturday judging from his performances at Canadian team practices.

"I'm going to tell those U.S. guys 'get your shinpads on because I'm coming for you, man,"' he joked from Vancouver.

"I'm really looking forward to seeing some familiar faces from MLS, and looking forward to playing the game," he added. "It's an honour to do that and I was really chuffed when they phoned me to see if I wanted to play in the game."

Yallop will be reunited with former Tampa Bay teammate Carlos Valderrama, the Colombian famous for his deft passing touch and wild shock of hair. He still holds the MLS record for assists.

"One of the best players in the world, especially South America," Yallop said.

Other colleagues on the World team include Scotland's Richard Gough and Bolivia's Marco Etcheverry.

In an interesting twist, Yallop will be coached at the legends game by Bruce Arena, former D.C. United coach and current U.S. national team boss.

The well-travelled Bora Milutinovic will coach the MLS USA Legends. Milutinovic, currently Honduras' technical director, coached five teams at the World Cup finals: Mexico, Costa Rica, the U.S., Nigeria and China.

With the likes of Cobi Jones and Eric Wynalda on the U.S. team, and all-star games' traditional disdain for defence, Yallop knows he could be in for a busy afternoon.

The 16-man U.S. Legends roster has a combined 1,289 international caps and some (Jones and goalkeeper Tony Meola) are still active. All 16 were part of the U.S. World Cup squad in 1994.

The U.S. roster also includes Alexi Lalas, current GM of the San Jose Earthquakes.

"I was looking for defenders and I saw two, plus me," Yallop said of the World team. "I expect to be playing the whole game and I don't think they (the rest) will be defending too much. But it will be fun."

He expects to line up with Gough and Nigeria's Michael Emenalo in the backline. All three can count on an interesting game with the unpredictable Jorge Campos in goal.

The good news is the game only lasts 50 minutes.

Yallop played in the '97 all-star game and coached in the 2002 game.

Canadian international goalkeeper Pat Onstad, a native of Vancouver who plays for San Jose, will start for the West in the all-star game that follows the legends contest.

Ironic that Mulutinovic will coach the MLS team and that

Arena will coach the WORLD team. Should be the other way

around ...

Hmm, I also thought that Bora was gone from the Honduras MNT ...

Bora is coaching the MLS team because he coached the 94 US WC team.

Bora left Honduras just after the last WCQ series in June, mainly because the Catholic church there publically criticized his $50,000 a month alleged salary.

The new coach for Honduras is Martínez (full name: Raúl Martínez Sambulá). Just had his first match as caoch at a friendly with Panam on Wednesday this week (0-0).

Yes, what the CP article doesn't say is that the the US Legend's team is in fact the 1994 US World Cup Team.

The MLS All-Star match itself is scheduled at 2 pm EDT live on both ABC and FoxportsWorldCanada. Too bad the Legends match isn't broadcast as well.

Why is the MLS scheduling ( or continuing) to schedule the All-Star match for a kickoff an hour after the ManU-Milan match (also broadcast live starting at 1 pm EDT on both Fox Sports US and Rogers) ?

Bad news is how the Honduran captain Guevara was able to solve Onstad.

East 3, West 2

By DAVID GINSBURG, AP Sports Writer

July 31, 2004

AP - Jul 31, 3:11 pm EDT

WASHINGTON (AP) -- Armado Guevara made sure that Freddy Adu wouldn't need to be remarkable for the Eastern Conference to win the MSL All-Star game.

Guevara verified his stature as the league's leading scorer, contributing two first-half goals Saturday to carry the East past the West 3-2.

Adu, the 15-year-old rookie sensation for hometown D.C. United, was inserted in the second half and thrilled the announced crowd of 21,378 with some sharp moves with the ball. But none of his shots came close to getting past goaltender Kevin Hartman.

Adu, who has two goals in seven games since joining the league in April, was a special pick by commissioner Don Garber

Although Adu had no bearing on the game, one of his teammates did. Alecko Eskandarian of D.C. United kicked a left-footed shot into the left corner of the net in the 74th minute to make it 3-1.

Jason Kreis, a nine-year veteran of the MLS and a seven-time All-Star, scored in the 89th minute for the West on a 20-foot shot that bounced off the right post.

Guevara, voted the game MVP, is the captain of the Honduras national team and the MLS points leader with 25 in 17 matches. He broke up a scoreless duel by scoring twice within a two-minute span, connecting from 18 yards out and converting a penalty shot.

Five of his nine goals this season with the MetroStars are on penalty shots, and his score in that situation Saturday was his sixth in six tries this season.

Down 2-1, the West missed a chance to pull even in the 53rd minute when backup goaltender Jon Busch flicked away a twisting penalty shot by Kreis.

The game was expected to be a high-scoring affair with little defense, but the sweltering conditions took a toll on the athletes and caused both coaches to substitute liberally in the second half.

There were few choice scoring chances at the outset, but the action picked up dramatically in the 20th minute.

That's when Guevara took a pass from Damani Ralph at the top of the 18-yard box and deftly booted the ball past West goalkeeper Pat Onstad. Then, after Ronnie O'Brien fouled Dema Kovalenko, the East was awarded a penalty shot by referee Michael Kennedy.

Guevara kicked the penalty shot into the left corner of the net past the diving Onstad for a 2-0 lead.

The West missed an excellent scoring chance in the 25th minute, when Kovalenko slipped behind his own goalie and kicked aside a sure goal by O'Brien.

In the 33rd minute, Onstad dropped to the ground to kick away a hard shot on goal by Ralph, who had broken free on the left side.

The West closed to 2-1 in the 43rd minute, when Brian Ching put in a header off a fine crossing pass by Richard Mulrooney.

Bad news? It was a frickin' All Star match where the West seemed incredibly disinterested.

Let's not turn this in to a 'Pat is bad' thread. It's wasn't his fault at all...and I don't think even he was worried about playing his best.
