Thanks "7". How does Bremen look this year without Ailton and Krstajic? Seems they did quite well against a quality team like Stuttgart. I see Ismael also missed a penalty. How does the German press rate Bremen this year?

Does Paul have a preferred position? Personally, I like him at right back, both for Bremen and Canada.

Sorry for all the questions, but if you get a minute ..........

The German press are making a point of emphasizing the departure of Ailton and Krstajic. However, they are patiently waiting to see what Klose (Striker) and Fahrenhorst (Defender) will bring to the team and whether they will successfully fill the gaps left by Ailton and Krstajic.

The squad definetly has more depth than it did last season. Not necessarily more players, but more quality.

As for Paul's favourite position.....anything except goalie!!! We always joke about it because that is the only position he hasn't played for Bremen! Last year was the first season that he only played either rightback or leftback! He obviously will play where ever the team needs him, but being given stability in a position is the most important for him right now. It took a little getting use to, but he has adapted quite well to switching from the left to the right if the team needs him to do so. With Canada, he prefers to play a more offensive role in the midfield, but again, it's upto Frank as to where he is most needed.

As for the nickname....I'm sorry for creating such a debate. I'll use my favourite from now on. I'll call him Diesel just for you GL :)

Bayern Munich beat Werder Bremen 3-2 in the final of the League Cup.

Werder Bremen were down 3-0 after 65 minutes. Klasnic scored in the 68th minute, and Ismael scored a penalty in the 74th minute to make it 3-2.

Paul Stalteri and Frank Baumann were both substituted in the 45th minute.

On a more positive note. Johan Micoud has agreed to a new deal with Werder Bremen which runs until 2007.

Thanks for the update. I am curious, I came accross this story earlier today ( ie.: league cup match), but thought that it might have been an old article since I knew that WB won the double last year. So on what basis did BM and WB end up playing in this final?

Also, with a number of euro clubs now playing in preseason matches in North america, not just in the champions world matchups but also that texas cup games where everton is playing, have you heard anything about a possible involvement by WB in tours for next season? Or ( to your knowledge)have WB ever been approached by the promoters of these events?

Sure would have been more interesting to see WB instead of BM this year in north america, whom from, what I read, were quite disppointing in that match versus Manchester Utd.

It is just a pre-season tournament where the top 6 teams from last season play against one another. I guess they use it as a measure of where the teams stand as they go into the new season. The games are nationally televised and I believe the winning team receives approximately 1 million Euro, but don't quote me on that.

I haven't heard of WB ever being approached by the promoters of those events, but that doesn't mean it hasn't happened. It would be great to see WB come to Canada. Mabye we need to let the promoters know that we are interested in seeing WB and Paul Stalteri in Canada!

On another note: For all of Paul's fans.....look out for the next issue of Inside Soccer.

Thanks for your contributions. But can you please post regular match updates in the "Canadians abroad" thread that is always stuck at the top? Thanks.

The double last year was the Bundesliga and the German Cup. This is the League Cup. (The German Cup involves clubs from several tiers in the pyramid while the League Cup involves only the top 6 clubs from the Bundesliga.)

Perhaps WB would be involved in one of those "lesser" tours, but I can't see ChampionsWorld going for anyone but the "big name" teams (from the perspective of NA). Regardless of who is actually better or who has actually won championships, we all know who the "big name" teams are, and WB aren't one of them.

definining or drawing a line at what constitutes a big team from a North american perspective is not easy. Aside from perhaps a handfull of clubs your pretty much looking mostly grey areas. By this definition, how can anyone say that Galatasaray would be a bigger draw than than WB in North america. And, what real differenece is there to north american audiences between BM and WB?

I think that we assume too much that the audiences that show up for these events are hard core and knowledable. But I don't believe that to be the case. If it were just the supporters and other hard core types only, then Centennial stadium rather than Skydome would make the most appropriate venue for most of these teams.

"Big clubs" are in the eye of the beholder and that label has more to do with promotion and marketing than anything else. So is WB a big club? If you tell NA audiences that they are then they would be wouldn't they? Plus you have the credentials of Bundesliga champs to back up you claim.
