Free kick
Also encouaging to see that the Sept 8 match in CRC will be played in the evening ( 8PM )rather than the scorching midday temperatures. I guess its a plus for canada to have their away game played in midweek in that it removes he possibility of the opponnents scheduling the matches in the midday sun and humidity. Guest Dave
The first two matches we have a Spanish speaking ref, the third match and English speaker. The Mexican and Salvadoran refs would tend to share a similar footballing culture with CR and Hond. One school of thought says that plays to Canada's advantage, since they might be more familiar with Central American diving and play acting, so more likely to penalize it. On the other hand, they may also accept it as a normal part of the game and so be more tolerant of it than a Caribbean ref would. Any thoughts on this? Joe05
Speaking from previous years, I'd say they'd be more willing to accept the play acting, if not completely ignore it.
matthew
I don't know how much you can draw from where they're from, but based on reputation Sibrian makes me nervous. I have high hopes for Archundia because most Mexican referees have a lot of experience and aren't over-awed by the occassion. While I've never liked Batres, I have to say I prefer an experienced referee I don't like than some rookie ref no one's ever heard of like the guy we got for the second Belize game. At least Ramdhan and Sibrian have been around for a long time. Sibrian is card happy and not afraid to make big calls. In fact he seems to be the centre of attention quite often. He called the jamaica 3 Haiti 0 game and sent two guys off. He also did the recent US/Honduras friendly and showed Amado Guevara straight red. The US fans weren't happy with him in a friendly against Ecuador just before Japorea. He handed out six cards and sent Mathis off, but didn't pushin two (allegedly) rash challenges from behind by Ecuador. No idea if he'll be calling lots of fouls or if he just likes to dish out cards (much like our last game where there weren't that many fouls, just a lot of cards). Either is bad for us since we're likely to be the more physical side and cards are bad, bad news in WCQ. Anyone know more on Sibrian? Ramdhan called the first Canada v Cuba game in the run up for France 98 and the 0-0 home draw against Jamaica in the hex. Don't remember him being around much lately. He seemed to get a lot of early round WCQ last time around which makes me think someone doesn't fancy him as real great. Still I don't mind getting a Carribean guy on the road, though Pendergast is calling the other game in our group that day. Why can't we have Peter? cheers, matthew
Gian-Luca
Ramdham is a bloody terrible ref, he called a Canada game back in qualifying for 1994 and was absolutely horrible - and drove Graham Leggatt round the bend in doing so, if I recall correctly. The Ref
Appointment of referees for these high level Fifa games is more political than rather based on assessment of said officials.
Former Champ
Does anyone remember when Canada actually complained to FIFA about the officiating ('98 qualifying?) and we ended up with a German ref for one qualifyer? But then that ref called every single foul Canada committed and we still got the shaft. I wager all those ref will blow. It's CONCACAF for christ sake.
