2-1 Edmonton, on a scramble from a corner in extra time of the second overtime period. Duncan Wilde lived up to his name, going after the ref after the goal. He had to be restrained by the two linesmen.

Edmonton outchanced Toronto about 2-1 and missed both two point blank (within five yards) open nets as well as two point blank hearders. But a Toronto striker (not Gkebe) had the real miss of the night, dragging the ball around the goal keeper....then chipping it over the wide open net from less than five feet away and directly in front. , but Charles Gbeke and Edgar Bartholemeu looked outstanding all night. Gbeke's goal was fairly nice, a turn and toe-poke from the edge of the box that clipped the inside of the post and rolled in.

Edmonton's first goal was also from a cross, although from the run of play. Toronto had a man sent off early in the second half after he took down Sean Fraser, who'd already beaten him for a breakaway into the box.

Officiating was very spoty -- as was attendance; a paltry 500 at a very cold and windy Foote field (it blew over a three-quarter full can of pop, and that's windy. The side of the field the teams were on made a definite difference, with anyone playing west to east massively overhitting every ball).

What a wild ending....strobe_z was right in front of the melee when the Toronto bench and some of the players went after the referee, SO WE'RE LOOKING FOR SOME GREAT PICTURES. I don't know the ref's name, but he looks Chinese.

Toronto had sort of a right to be upset, because the 2nd overtime period had expired 2 1/2 minutes before the goal. Why did the ref do it? Maybe he lost track of the time. Maybe he was upset at the whiny piss-poor attitude of the Lynx team, time-wasting and playoing really dirty. Who knows. Lynx is such a scumbag, dirty team they deserved to lose, even if it was illegal.

It's official. It's not because they are from Toronto. It's not because they are such a tasteless organization. It's not because they are dirty rotten arrogant players (who thought they had a right to walk over a seemingly failing team). It's not because they have a whining coaching staff. It's all these things and more! I NOW OFFICIALLY LOVE TO HATE THE LYNX!

Here's some pics from the game. Unfortunately I didn't get a picture of the raving mad Toronto coaching staff... the batteries on my camera ran out. I think I managed to sparkle him with the flash a couple of times though if that's any consolation though.

You can see the coaches starting to go after the officials in picture number 8 in the gallery shots.

I'll post a game report soon.

Hey Strobe!

Great game to watch tonight! The east indian guy behind me had me in stiches the whole game with his back-seat coaching. That Toronto miss Jeremy mentioned was one of the worst misses I've ever seen (and it would have been a golden goal too). Funnier still was watching his entire defence and keeper fall down in utter disbelief immediately after. Lots of great give-and-goes, 1v1's, and chances on net made the game the most fun of all I've seen so far.

I was surprised about all that extra time too, but in the end the stronger team won so the Lynx shouldn't feel that robbed.

Chris.

EDIT: Thanks for the help guys:), here is the final report for

a-league.com . Blois was definitely the guy ejected, as confirmed both by Lynx press release and uslsoccer.com. I corrected my line-up and stats using uslsoccer.com report. However, I think there were a lot of errors in it, and some of my initial notes were probably more correct, but it's not that important. It was a difficult match to get details correct for various reasons.

I'm glad to see that the official attendance was close to my initial estimate of 450. The stands were definitely only half-full, and many of the the local posters tend to be a little bit over-optimistic about the attendance. The attendence was taken by a girl using a manual clicker at the entrance, but I suppose she could have missed a few getting their early or sneaking in the side.

A cool, blustery evening at Foote Field grass stadium, the weather reducing last week’s Edmonton FC home opener by half. Rain was threatening all night.

Both teams had basic 4-4-2 formations. Toronto used Steele, listed as a forward, as a midfielder . Edmonton basically used Fraser as a midfielder as well.

Toronto attacked strongly, and generally had the upper hand through much of the match, with some exceptions. They had between 55 to 66 per cent possession through the match. Their ball control and domination on the one-on-ones was clear. They were very successful throughout the match at catching the generally disorganized Edmonton defence flatfooted, and would have scored a lot more goals had they been more successful at finishing. The goalkeeper Hancock was very good throughout the match, making most of the stops when Edmonton were able to mount sustained attacks. Neither of the goals were his fault. The also played an extremely physical and harassing game,, and tried the referee’s patience throughout. The referee’s spotty officiating generally favored Toronto throughout the match, as he let play continue for the most part. The linesmen were also spotty, miscalling or missing numerous offsides.

Edmonton played a spirited game, but were very sloppy in their passing. They were able to have very sustained attacks, and their attacking generally dominated in short periods throughout the match, and after the first five minutes of overtime. The goalkeeper Stankov was good at stopping initial shots, but showed decided weakness both in positioning and in dropping initial blocks. He was often caught out of position by the Lynx attackers, and was lucky to only surrender one goal.

The first half opened with sustained attacking by the Lynx in the first 10 minutes. Toronto’s attack was against a strong wind, which Edmonton did not seem able to take advantage of. Toronto hit the cross-bar, and had several corner kicks during this time.

Edmonton responded with a series of attacks for three minutes. At the 14th minute there was a minute where the ball remained in the Edmonton 18 yard box, when Toronto had a number of close range shots.

The first half could be summarized as largely being missed Toronto opportunities and awful Edmonton passing. An example of the poor passing is when Toronto got an errant pass near the Edmonton goal, and Ibo had to commit a yellow card foul to stop the breakaway. John Nusum had numerous breakaways for Toronto, and his frustration showed when he committed a yellow card pull in the Edmonton box (he committed numerous fouls throughout the evening, but was inexplicably avoided being given a second yellow on many occasions).

Although Toronto continued to dominate, Edmonton did have some limited attacks in the last part. The best chance before scoring is when Sibiya, who had an excellent match, hit a hard close shot that was only stopped by an equally excellent effort by Hancock at 27’.

The goal by Edmonton at 37’ was as a result of an incredible run up the right side by Fraser, who made a perfect cross to Sibiya, who quickly kicked it in.

The goal woke Toronto up, and at 39’ Gerba had a great shot, made after an equally great breakaway, stopped by Stankov. Toronto physically dominated the last five minutes of the match. The half ended with no injury time, even though at least 2 minutes of injury time due to real injuries should have been added.

The first 15 minutes of the first half showed continual Lynx attack, and terrible passing by Edmonton. Toronto took full advantage of the continuing strong wind at their back, but were again unable to finish.

At about 60’, the wind died down, and Edmonton managed to mount a four minute series of attacks on the Lynx. At 64’, Fraser had beaten Blois on a breakaway into the box, and was chopped down in the box from behind pretty savagely. It was typical of Toronto’s physical play, but it was the only red card of the night (to Blois). There was no penalty kick though, as the referee decided to give Edmonton only a free kick outside the box.

Gbeke's goal came at 67’, a turn and toe-poke from the left edge of the box that Stankov initially stopped, but it kept rolling to the right and caught the inside of the right post and slowly went in.

The remainder of the regular time was more of the same, and Toronto again had the advantage (and no disadvantage to being down to ten men) as the wind picked up.. Despite several injuries, there was only about a minute of extra time until the second half ended. It was already getting dark when the first 90’ ended at about 9:15 pm, and there are no lights at this stadium. The first five minutes of overtime involved domination by the Lynx. After that, Edmonton had the better chances, especially through Fraser and Akok. Toronto again had the wind. The first 10’ half of overtime ended on the dot.

One of the highlights in the second half of overtime was when Nusum of the Lynx

was able to carry the ball around the Edmonton keeper on the left, leaving himself open only a few yards from the mouth of the open goal. He had all kinds of time, but somehow managed to kick it over the cross-bar. Even through the gathering darkness, the crowd could see the nightmare miss very clearly and groaned thankfully.

It really looked like the overtime would end in a tie after that. Edmonton dominated, and Toronto, settling on a shorthanded tie, started all kinds of delaying tactics. At 20:00 on the game clock, half the crowd got up to leave, However, the play continued for an extra 2 minutes plus (although there is to be no added time to overtime). Edmonton continued it’s pressure, Gordon Chin having a particularly strong shot caught by Hancock. Still the Edmonton pressure continued, the referee not blowing his whistle. Edmonton was awarded a corner kick on the left, and crowded the box with all but two defensemen. The Vignevic corner was fisted out by Hancock, but was popped in at close range by defenceman Devlin to the open right hand side of the net. The whistle blew in the gathering darkness.

The crowd was shocked but happy, the first points by the new resurrected FC entity. The Edmonton players came up to the grandstand and gave the small crowd an ovation for their noisy support on such an uncomfortable evening.

The Lynx bench were not happy at the extra time at the end of overtime, and ran out to confront the referee. They had to be physically restrained by the linesmen and some of the local club staff. The melee continued for several minutes. Although they may have had some right to complain technically, there will doubtless be some disciplinary action against Lynx coach Wilde and his staff by the league.

For the season, the Lynx fall to 7-11-1, while Edmonton FC improved to 3-11-6 (including the Aviator's run).

What a crazy ending for a match!

Quotes

-from uslsoccer.com

"We made the mistakes and have only ourselves to blame for the result," said a very disappointed Lynx Head Coach, Duncan Wilde. "We had more than enough chances to win the game but didn't make good use of them. In the end, I was very frustrated with how the outcome was determined."

-from Edmonton Sun:

"I was just in the right place at the right time - finally - and we got some luck and I just ripped it. It's a great feeling," said Devlin. "I got up as fast as I've ever got up in my life and just ran. The fans went nuts."

"We'll play anywhere," said Sibiya. "The minute we look at it as a negative, you almost defeat yourself. We're professionals and we've got to treat it like that no matter what the situation is. It could be worse, honestly. We could not be playing."

Beachesl, just a few small things.

I believe this:

"The goalkeeper Stankov was good at initial stopping shots."

Should be this:

"The goalkeeper Stankov was good at stopping initial shots."

Also, in the sixth paragraph, 2nd line, it looks like "gaol" is a typo.

A line down it looks like you forgot to complete this (*) fragment:

"John Nusum had numerous breakaways for *, and his frustration showed when he committed a yellow card pull in the Edmonton box"

In the 7th paragraph, 2nd line, Hancock is spelt "Hasncok" (typo I'm guessing. Too bad you missed the 'o' key ;) )

Other than that, looks good.

The biggest error is the time of the winning goal: since each half of extra time is only 10 minutes, you want 110'+, not 120'+.

Here are some more minor errors in addition to those JayWay pointed out:

From The Edmonton Sun:

'Nice!'

SCOTT ZERR, EDMONTON SUN

If there's any local interest left in buying Edmonton's professional men's soccer squad, they should step up sooner rather than later. Last night, Edmonton FC - the remnants of the abandoned Aviators - put on a performance that should attract some attention in a thrilling 2-1 overtime victory over the Toronto Lynx at Foote Field.

"Nice," smiled defender Ebo, pretty much exhausting his grasp of the English language.

It's not urgent that a local ownership group or individual makes itself known - there's still plenty of time before the sense of loss becomes dreadfully imminent - but anyone with a burning desire to keep the A-League club might as well get down to business.

"We've fielded one call already from a group that's interested. They're more along the lines of moving the team to another city," said Dave Askinas, chief operating officer of the United Soccer Leagues.

PASSING FANCY

Askinas wouldn't name the party but did confirm it was an American city with at least a passing fancy in acquiring the franchise rights. Potential homes exist in Phoenix, Denver, Sacramento and San Diego.

"Our first priority is to keep the team in Edmonton. After that we would look at other options,"said Askinas, who added that the USL hasn't put any sort of attendance target on Edmonton FC for its remaining games at Foote Field and Coronation Park.

"We just want to make sure we put on some good games and offer events that people want to attend. Sometimes when you're in a better atmosphere at a smaller place something good can grow out of that."

While the atmosphere was somewhat dampened last night by a crowd of less than 500 who braved the chilly wind, FC's showing certainly will create some buzz in the local soccer community.

Edmonton snared a 1-0 lead in the 37th minute when Sean Fraser took off on a run down the wing and then sent a perfect feed into the box that was knocked into the roof of the net by Sipho Sibiya for his first of the season. Fraser drew a red card on Toronto defender Andre Arango in the 65th minute, but the depleted Lynx knotted the score only three minutes later as the FC defence got caught standing still.

Charles Gbeke toe-poked a low shot that caught the inside of the post and trickled past Edmonton 'keeper Nic Stankov.

Both teams had tremendous chances in OT as Desmond Tachie was robbed by Lynx 'keeper Bryheem Hancock and just moments later John Nusum wasted a breakaway when he eluded Stankov but lofted a shot over a gaping goal.

With time elapsed in the second extra period, FC's Nik Vignjevic launched a corner kick that was punched away by Hancock but a dead-tired Devlin moved up from his defensive spot and hammered a drive into the back of the net for his first A-League tally.

"I was just in the right place at the right time - finally - and we got some luck and I just ripped it. It's a great feeling," said Devlin. "I got up as fast as I've ever got up in my life and just ran. The fans went nuts."

BEYOND THE TIME-FRAME

So too did the Toronto coaching staff, who chased the referee across the field, screaming their displeasure at the fact the match went beyond the 20-minute OT time-frame. Whether Edmonton FC gets the same kind of rowdy response from their fans next time out will be interesting since the Aug. 2 contest with Seattle has been moved to dilapitated Coronation Park.

"We'll play anywhere," said Sibiya. "The minute we look at it as a negative, you almost defeat yourself. We're professionals and we've got to treat it like that no matter what the situation is. It could be worse, honestly. We could not be playing."

I thought Fraser was the man of the match. It was Fraser who got pulled down causing the red card to Blois. Sibiya's goal was entirely created by Fraser using his speed to blow by two defenders. But most impressive was the way he kept coming back to help defend, using that same speed to run down the Toronto attackers and strip the ball away.

I never thought I'd say this, but I'm actually starting to like Vignevic. I used to cringe whenever he got the ball. But now I find myself hoping they'll pass it to him. Most of our most dangerous attacks seem to go through either Vignevic or Chin. Whenever he gets the ball, you know something interesting is going to happen. It's either something completely boneheaded or something utterly brilliant. With Nikki, there doesn't seem to be any in-between.

Edmonton are definitely playing a less cautious style since they donned the red jerseys. I wonder if the coach has instructed them to just go out and entertain the fans instead of trying to eke out a nil-nil draw.

Heh.. that was me all right... I remember the couple with the baby sitting behind me, and of course the East Indian guy.. the "RUN DHALIWAL!" was cracking me up too. Not sure I can put a face to your "name" though... you weren't one of the guys sitting next to me that kept calling for them to "get it out to the side!" were you? Next time say "hi", always good to meet another Canadian soccer fan. :)

The girl that was sitting next to me on occaision was Alisa Lang, of SFE United fame. She gave away a bunch of supporters t-shirts and other goodies last game. She was telling me that she'd talked to Greg MacDonald former business manager of the Aviators. Seems the team had 3(!?) freelance photographers, so he might be able to get me some pics to use at the Hangar and other projects.

I was looking around so much for a variety of reasons (take your pick):

- to see if beachesl and/or Sergio (aka River City) from here/the Hangar were in attendance. I eventually found beachesl, and met Chet as well (beachesl noticed he was clutching a print out from the Hangar). Too bad I didn't get to meet Kicked as well.

- to get a look at the crowd. I knew attendance was going to be a topic of discussion.

- to move around to give my @ss a rest from the cold hard benches.

- see if the Sportsnet/A-Channel/CBC cameras were back in action this game.

- to get a look at the hilarious East Indian guy/Couple with the baby behind me. :)

All in all I thought it was a good game. Too bad my camera crapped out before I could get a nice pic or two of Wilde goin' Wild though.

Just reading the discussions on the Calgary board regarding what they'd like to see regarding a new stadium, and they mentioned needing comfy seats instead of benches because of their tender butts.

Hmmm. I'm going to be in Edmonton from July 31 - August 9. I see that Edmonton FC has a couple of home matches.

1st question to the Edmonton boys, where are they playing?

2nd question to the Toronto boys, should I break out a good old, 'Who's your owner?' chant for old times sake? [}:)] Or would the T-O-R O-N-T O-O-O-O-O-O Lynx FC be sufficient?

1st question to the Edmonton boys, where are they playing?

Well your in luck stranger, the Edmonton FC's next 4 matches are home matches. The first two are at Coronation Stadium,

near the Odyssium Space Sciences Centre (at 111th Avenue and 142 Street, just to the west of Westmount Mall, which is a major bus transit centre). The Northeast pary of town.

Monday, August 2 7:00 pm vs. Seattle Sounders Cornation Stadium

Saturday, August 7 2:00 pm vs. Portland Timbers Cornation Stad

Tuesday, August 10 7:30 pm vs. Calgary Mustangs Foote Field

Sunday, August 15 6:00 pm vs. Milwaukee Wave Foote Field

I am certain that the August 10 kickoff at Foote (south of the University severl kms, 71 Avenue and Belgravia Road), will be moved back to at least 7:00 because of the darkness problem.

Hope to see you there. I usually wear a white and red Coca-Cola baseball cap.
