RULES

The Regulations for the Olympic tournaments (Mens and Womens)

http://www.fifa.com/documents/tourn...c/Olympia_e.pdf

My highlights:

1. For Mens, 18-Player Rosters for entire tournament in Greece. Three of these may be overagers (born before Jan 1 / 1981), who were not allowed to compete in the qualifiers. A minumum of two of these must be goalkeepers. All of the roster may sit on the bench and be substitutes (3 per match allowed). the rosters must be submitted to FIFA by July 21.

2. The women have similiar roster rules, but no age limits at all.

3. The teams may also name 4 Alternate Players, who are not to be on the bench. They may only be activated for the roster upon proof of incapacitating injury or force majeure (deaths, serious reasons permitting absences, etc.), and after a hearing in which all parties may make submissions.

4. Tiebreakers for End of Group Stages:

1. Total Group Match Points

2. Total Group Goal Difference

3. Total Group Goals Scored

4. If still equal, then Match Points between tied teams

5. Goal Difference Between Tied Teams

6. goals scored between tied teams

7. Fair play quotient (yellow and red card acculmulation)

8. If still equal, and the tied teams play in the final match

of Group play together, after regulation time, the tie

shall be determined by Penalty Kicks at the end of

that match

9. Lots

5. Acculmulation of Cards

The Competition Regualtions are silent on this, so the FIFA Disciplinary Code applies: The cards do not carry-over from the qualifying matches to Greece (Art. 36), because they are separate cpmpetitions. However, the cards from the Group stages in Greece will carry over to the playoff rounds, unless the Disciplinary committee for the tournament makes a decision otherwise ( I am not aware of whether they have).

6. Extra Time

Extra time is the new FIFA standard of a full 30 minutes, followed by penalty kicks if still tied after 30 minutes. Therefore, no more "goldens goals". The only exception is the women's bronze medal match, which will only be penalty kicks after regulation time because of scheduling (it is played just before the women's final as a apart of a doubleheader).

==================================================================

ZURICH, Switzerland (AP) -- Manchester United's Cristiano Ronaldo will lead Portugal in the Olympic soccer tournament, along with three other players who helped the Portuguese reach the European Championship final earlier this month.

The deadline to submit rosters to FIFA headquarters for both the men's and women's tournaments was Wednesday.

The Olympic men's tournament is for under-23 teams, but each team is allowed three exceptions. Some senior national team players fit the age requirement, meaning several teams will feature more than three national team players. The women's competition, which will include the United States, is for the senior national teams.

The U.S. men's team failed to qualify for Athens after losing to Mexico in a regional qualifying match in February.

Portugal, which lost to Greece 1-0 in the Euro 2004 final, and Italy will be two of the favorites in Athens.

Besides Ronaldo, Portugal will have new Chelsea midfielder Tiago Mendes, FC Porto striker Helder Postiga and Benfica goalkeeper Jose Moreira on its squad.

Italy, which won the under-21 European Championship for the fifth time last month, will use AC Milan playmaker Andrea Pirlo of Italy, Parma striker Alberto Gilardino, Parma defender Matteo Ferrari and AS Roma goalkeeper Ivan Pelizzoli.

Other top players include Feyenoord midfielder Shinji Ono of Japan; Valencia defender Roberto Ayala and FC Barcelona forward Javier Saviola of Argentina; and new FC Porto defender Giourkas Seitaridis of Greece.

By playing in the Olympics, some European-based players will miss competitive matches with their clubs, including the opening of the English Premier League season.

No bloody way Saviola should have been called, and he should decline. He is missing the entire Barcelona pre-season, will end up being like two months with Argentina, and who's paying his salary?

Saviola is well-liked here, but if he doesn't react to this one the tide could turn against him. Minimum committment to your club.

Ferguson fury over Olympics

Olympics squads named

Manchester United manager Sir Alex Ferguson says Cristiano Ronaldo and Gabriel Heinze should not have to play for their countries at the Olympics.

Ronaldo has been called up by Portugal and Heinze by Argentina for the August tournament in Greece.

"We'd have to give Ronaldo two-months off when he returns so we wouldn't have him until November. It's ridiculous," Ferguson told BBC Radio Five Live.

"We're trying to get their feelings on it because we are disappointed."

Ferguson added: "I just don't even think they'd be that interested after playing in Euro 2004 (Ronaldo) and the Copa America (Heinze)."

United chief executive David Gill added: "We signed Heinze from 1 July and will effectively see him from September if he plays in Athens.

"We pay his salary for two months, he's going to be an integral part of the team and so you have to ask is that fair? It can't be."

----------------------------------------------------------------

Question: Don't all these genuises on these super-clubs figure all this out in the equation when they sit down and figure who they want

and how much they have to pay them? International duty is a fact of life in the football business, just like injuries.

I for one am glad to see the clubs having to be forced to be flexible

and not having their money dictate the scene. It'll be good to have to use their reserves. Clubs are more than their 11 starters.

Okay, but how is that any different from some of the other players? (Ayala, Heinze)

Fans of clubs who have money and aren't selling everyone under the sun to stay afloat should be happy with what they've got. :(

First off all Barça has money because it has 120,000 club members who put the money in there, it is owned by the fans and democratic elections decide on the board. It also has money because it signs players who are attractive to tv, marketing, and Asian tours.

Second, since many players decide to choose between tournaments to not put overt pressure on their clubs, I feel that Saviola should reconsider. Márquez has bowed out of the Olympics, and he did the right thing. Right now Barça just got rid of Kluivert and signed Larsson, but is it reasonable to go into the league with last year's starter not having played pre-season, not adjusting to new teammates? In the last three friendlies without Larsson (who just came in after holidays) we played a youth striker up front, from the B team. Not a way to build a squad for the upcoming campaign. All I am asking for is a bit of balance. The call-up of Saviola is abusive.

Ferguson's Olympic ultimatum to Heinze

July 23, 2004

LONDON (AFP) - Alex Ferguson has told Argentina defender Gabriel Heinze to skip next month's Athens Olympics or never play for Manchester United.

Heinze, 26, has been called up to the Argentina Under-23 squad for Athens as an over-age player following his 6.9 million pound (12.5 million dollar) move to Old Trafford from Paris St Germain.

And United will also be without Cristiano Ronaldo for the first month of the English Premiership after Portugal named the winger in their Olympic squad.

But Ferguson warned Heinze: "This situation could deny Gabriel Heinze a career at Manchester United.

"The left-back position was his. But at the start of the season I am going to have to have someone else in there if he is at the Olympics.

"He could find it difficult to get into the team. In fact, he may never play a game for Manchester United.

"He has an opportunity to start a career here but that has been taken from him.

"It is a different situation to Ronaldo. We saw what he could do last season. He has started his career here. Gabriel has not."

Ronaldo and Heinze will miss the season opener against Chelsea at Stamford Bridge on August 15 plus three other Premiership matches.

Ferguson was reportedly trying to contact Heinze, who is preparing for Sunday's Copa America final against Brazil in Peru, to try to obtain his release.

"These players are going to be exhausted," he said.

Ferguson fears he may be without 19-year-old Ronaldo for two months.

Ronaldo has been lined up for the Olympics and immediately after that for two internationals in September.

"I would have no choice but to give him two months off," Ferguson said.

However, United's chances of securing the players' release are slim.

The Olympic tournament is a FIFA-recognised competition meaning that a club would face severe sanctions for withdrawing a player.

I'm not necessarily disagreeing with you. I'm really just playing devil's advocate. You make good points, but they can also be made in the case of the other players. Hence, none of them should play in the Olympics? And in that case, what is the point of the Olympic tournament if there will be so many key absentees? Another question: what if we were talking about a Canadian player? Again, I'm just raising some questions.

I think you took me too seriously. I was just wallowing over Lazio. :(

EDIT: Getting further off topic, but since no one else will care enough to warrant a new thread, I'll just squeeze this in here: I just read about a Barcelona vs. Lazio friendly being planned for Hampden Park, Glasgow on August 12 (also Barcelona vs. Parma at Millenium Stadium, Cardiff on August 14, prior to Barça's Far East trip (Lazio are in Japan right now, coincidentally)).

Argentina appear to be taking the Olympics quite seriously, as are Italy (which is usually the case, even though they don't care so much about the U20 WC for some reason). Argentina have never won an Olympic gold medal in soccer, and Italy haven't won since 1936.

There shouldn't be any Alex Ferguson- or Jeffrey-like ;) complaints coming from Italy about players called to the Olympics, because the start of Serie A has been postponed to September 11/12. I sort of expected this, because in 2000 it was postponed all the way until October (although with 20 teams [xx(] in Serie A this year the schedule was already going to be tricky and now it will be worse (I figure they will go well into June)).

  • 2 weeks later...

Looks like some real thrillers today, Italy rallying to tie Ghana 2-2 Paraguay scoring late to hold off Japan 4-3 and Irag beating Portugal 4-2! Goals galore, but not a chance of catching a match live as far as I can tell. Shame because it's a great tournament.
