Daniel came on in minute 64’ in POAKs first real training friendly vs. French champion Olympique Lyon.

POAK lost 1-0. The French champs dominated most of the match. I haven’t come across any Fernandes –specific news yet.

Update:

I found a game report on one of the greek news sites. Apparently, Daniel made an excellent save off a Clerc header in the 86th min.

Frenandes played at least the first half in PAOK's 1-0 to French A' Division team Bastia.

Here is a French game report.

SCB 1 - Salonique 0

English report from paokfc.gr. If that French report is right Daniel had a fine half. Just the fact that he is getting a start in pre-season is a good sign. He should be at least third keeper for them, and will probably be named to the eligible list for Champions.

PAOK was beaten 1-0 by Bastia, at the second friendly game that played in France. Scorer of the one and only goal was the 24-year old Morrocan, Youssouf Hadji. PAOK’s players created many chances to score at least one goal, but due to bad luck they did not make it.

PAOK’s starting line-up:

Fernandez, Feutchine, Udeze, Vokolos, Skarmoutsos, Spasic, Koutsis, Yiasoumis, Vangelis, Hasiotis, Egomitis.

At the second half, the head-coach Mr. Angelos Anastasiadis, decided to change the line-up completely, in order to give the opportunity to all his players to take part in the game. Because of that, the players that participated in the game’s second half were the following:

Tohouroglou, Hagan, Garpozis, Markos, Maladenis, Karadimos, Andralas, Zisopoulos, Theodoridis, Salpigidis, Louka.

Bastia's starting eleven:

Penneteau, Chimbonda, Mwanza, Yahia, Longue, Sidibé, Matingou, Jau, Hadji, André, Vairelles.

At the second half, the head-coach of the team, Mr. Francois Ciccolini, decided to substitute some of his players and because of this, the starting eleven were:

Penneteau, Chimbonda, Matingou, Song, Sauget, Sidibé, Essola, Jau, Ben Saada, André #954;#945;#953; Née.

Other substitutions: Andre for Mulenga (73’) and Ghisolfi for Sitibe (75’).

Keep your eyes open for Alen Marcina, who was to join PAOK in July from his temp club in Iceland.

He'll probably be loaned out to another club, most likely in a lower division.

He was not on the list of those invited to the pre-season camp. Mind you, there were quite a few younger and reserve players left in Greece.

Well, regarding Alen Marcina, looks like he's on trial with Nsaliwa's Saarbruecken:

(from website)

Heute Abend trifft Fußball-Zweitligist 1.

Paok have arrived in Dax, a resort in the Dordogne near Bordeaux, and will play Monaco tomorrow, Toulouse on Thursday, and Girondins on Saturday. With so many games we are bound to see more of Thunder in action.

Is there Greek tv in Canada, reports that games will be on a Gk (I think) network called Supersport (now that the tv workers are not on strike anymore, gotta love those unions warming up for the Olympics).

Daniel did not play as Paok drew 1-1 with Monaco in a pre-season game Wed near Bourdeaux. This time instead of tons of subs they basically played their starters.

Rivals Olympiakos just got a big boost, in theory, with the signing of Rivaldo today.

Daniel played 90 in Paok's 1-0 pre-season loss to Toulouse, played near the French city in Agen. The only goal came on a penalty after Thunder brought down a striker on a one on one in the box. The overall team was full of theoretical subs.

Since I'm not allowed to say that right now he is pushing to the top of our depth chart in keepers, since he's of Portuguese background and I'm a Euro-snob, why doesn't someone else please state the obvious.

He may pushing, but he's got a long way to go yet to challenge for a serious look at our top two goalie positions. If he can get some first team action with PAOK, then I would say he's "pushing", but right now he would fall below Stamatopolous, Sutton, Zagar, Onstad and Lars.

If Lars can't get a contract soon, that may change. I suspect lars is currently with a club as we speak, or we would have seen him in our recent B-Team friendlies.

Daniel Fernandes played the second half for PAOK as they fell to Girondins in a pre-season match 2-1. Thunder let in one goal in the 2nd half, after which PAOK got one back on a penalty.

After the four pre-season games vs. French 1st division sides Daniel has played a full game, a half game, and a third of a match. Started two of the four. Just as the senior starter from last year did, Tohouroglou. The other keeper only got a third in the first match vs. Bastia.

This suggests that Dani has perhaps pushed into the 2nd keeper spot at Paok, who are heading to Salonika for the end of the pre-season.

From www.paokfc.gr/index

PAOK was defeated 2-1 by Bordeaux, at Firmin Daudou Football Ground, in Trelissac. That was PAOK’s last friendly game in France, as the basic stage of pre-season preparation in France ends tonight. In addition, the team will fly to Salonica within a few hours.

Despite of the bad condition of the pitch and the high temperature, both teams performed well and satisfied the spectators.

Scorers: Riera (3’), Cohade (61’), Skarmoutsos (72’ pen.)

Line-ups:

Daniel Fernandes has been named to the 25 man roster for Paok Salonika's Champions league qualifiers, starting next week. Only three keepers are on this list, nos. 1, 33 and him, no. 55, kept from last year as well.

33 seems to be the starter, Daniel could back him up, no. 1 is a senior keeper ready to retire, being phased out but seems to be a key person for the club.

PAOK's rival is Maccabi Tel Aviv, first leg for this last qualifying round on the 10th in Salonica.

If Daniel is called in as back-up, which I think will happen, it'll be a good sign, but even as third keeper for the first team he's done well as he's beat out two other young keepers signed this winter.
