What would help is some promotion within the city. If it wasn't for the fact that the CPSL and the Thunder websites were updated, I'd never know when the hell a game is.

I realize that advertising costs money, but the whole idea of 'if you build it, they will come' does not work in Hamilton. The Skyhawks basketball club worked their asses off, and they had the crowds to prove it. Every game was event, and you couldn't go down any major street in this city without knowing about the Skyhawks.

Also, (if you're reading) the name Thunder doesn't do anything for me. Nor does the blue/red/white thing. Hamilton's colours are black, white and gold. Go rip off Newcastle United's home kit and you're moving in the correct direction. I don't know how much money DiBartolomeo wants for the name Steelers, but THAT'S attachment. THAT'S sentiment. THAT'S my team.

People who don't know anything about soccer in this city still know that the Steelers were Hamilton's soccer team.

If I was starting a new soccer franchise in this city, I get the name and the colours and bring in the people who remember the steelers. Then I'd get Lakeport to sponsor the kit. I would market to kids, but I wouldn't make it stupid (goofy logo, goofier mascots... Kick'n Chicken anyone?). I'd also work with the other sports teams in the city to promote the games and the sport. Also, a rivalry with St. Kitts Roma would not be out of the question. I would work with them to build a 'derby' atmosphere, and get people to care.

And what's with the 8pm kick-off times? Is 7 so wrong?

How close are the Thunder from buying the name STEELERS from Mario DiBartolomeo??? Have they recently mentioned it to anyone??? For I remember that the Thunder were planning of reinstating that name in conditions that they get accepted into the A-League. I still have fond memories of the Blizzard-Steelers rivalry of which was well known as the QEW derby. Even myself, I am hoping for the next set of investors (with deep pockets for sure) who are willing to buy-out the Hatrells from the A-League scene. In with such a move, reinstate the name Toronto Blizzard.

I haven't heard one way or the other about the purchase of the name Steelers. Though DeBartolomeo didn't do crap with the team (though it was drawing 2000+ per night in the CSL), the name is important to me.

I find it strange that with all of these pseudo-marketing geniuses and sports entrepreneurs, soccer doesn't necessarily take on the fervor of gimmicky marketing. I believe that you could've called them the Rochester Hot Pants, and they still would've shown up in droves. And with these flashy logos and cutesy names, does any hardcore supporter of soccer relate to stupid names like the Silverbacks or the Salty Dogs?

I wouldn't be adverse to just calling Hamilton FC (or something that catchy) and just let the fans refer to them as the "Steelers". Like Man Utd. are the "red devils" and Everton are the "toffees". But in both instances, they've got something like a 100 years on us.

I would love for a rivalry, but sadly, with emotional attachment to a club that no longer exists and no emotional attachment to a team that DOES exist, it's hard to get inspired unless the people know about it. I'll naturally hate every club that shows up against Hamilton, and whoever causes the most headaches will be the team to harass. :)

It's kinda like TiCats v. Argos on Labour Day. Aside from the 1000 or so Argo fans who make the trek each time, does anyone in Toronto care about that derby?

Sorry, random thoughts and frustration over sports marketing...

What is wrong with "Silverbacks"? It's a type of Gorilla, and one that was very famous in the Atlanta zoo for many, many years. Hence it has relevence to the city of Atlanta, and was certainly better than their previous name of "Ruckus". Since you live in Hamilton and your CFL team is called "Tiger-Cats", I'm amazed you find the a team using a type of gorilla for their name "stupid".

Really? I take that back about the Silverbacks, and I'll give you the "Ruckus" name point (it was pretty bad). But I noticed no argument about the Salty Dogs... strange. And with all the history that Atlanta has, they came up with a zoo attraction. I guess you have to live there to appreciate it.

As far as the Tiger-cats, there's nothing stupid about a name that's been around for over 50 years. The Tiger-Cats were the result of an amalgam of the Hamilton Tigers football club and the Hamilton Wildcats football club. Short of calling them Hamilton United, I think that's a pretty impressive lineage since it predates the 1900s.

Back in those times, there was no need for a fancy logo, catchy name or rediculous marketing towards children. It was about the game. You could call a team the Thistles, Senators, Arenas, St. Pats, Maple Leafs, Maroons, Tigers, Bulldogs, Alouettes, Wanderers... not the most imaginative names, but it provided the team with an identity, nothing more. No clever reference to history required.

I wasn't saying there was anything stupid about the name. I'm a CFL fan and aware of the history of the name. I was just saying that since there's no problem with that name there's no problem with Atlanta using Silverbacks as their name. There both animals (or whatever Gorillas are).

As for the Salty Dogs name, they had an internet poll with a choice of 4-6 names (forget exactly). Most of the votes for "Salty Dogs" were votes from fans in rival cities who wanted them to have a silly name. There's a lesson to be learned there for future teams. Don't have fans choose. Have the guts to pick a good name yourself.

In some write up a year ago, Syracuse chose 'Salty' in their name because of the early salt mining or refining in their city 100 years ago.

Well consider myself schooled, I apologize to both Syracuse and Atlanta... I only singled them out because, without knowing the background, the names are still silly. If I lived in Syracuse, I'd have preferred the name "Syracuse Salt Miners" over "Syracuse Salty Dogs". You have the imagery of hard work vs. a cartoon character.

I'm not a fan of the whole "choose the name" as much as I am for submitting suggestions.

Steelers you don't have to apologize... "Salty Dogs" is the most ridiculous name short of "Raging Rhinos". What's with New York state and idiotic names. Thunder isn't a great name but at least it isn't embarassing. What the hell is the T.O. club called the Lynx for? And why did they rip-off Hamilton's colours? I still lose my mind over that one. Toronto = blue/white, Hamilton = black/gold. Is it really that difficult? Luis has it right: bring back the Steelers/Blizzard QEW Derby! I hate London City but beating T.O. is what really gets the blood of Hamiltonians boiling and I have fond (but vague) memories of being a young, young man and going to watch the Bunbury led Steelers play the Blizzard with both sides of Brian Timmins pretty packed and traveling Blizzard fans squished up in the southeast end. I thought it was hilarious at the time (I was about 10) but looking back those seem like halycon days.

Steelers: Check out the chants section on the BHTC page. I re-wrote "Fields of Athenry" to be "Fields of Brian Timmins" and its all about the old Steelers - with a little "post-industrial gloom" thrown in as well for you BlueandWhite. If you don't know the tune download the live version of "Fields of Athenry" by the Wolfe Tones since that gives the best idea of how the song sounds when sung by a crowd. Stay away from the traditional recordings as they're way to slow. If you can get the tune down I'd be up for singing a verse or two at tonights game (if we can get the music to shut up for more than 2 minutes!). Unfortunately the other Celtic supporters in the BHTC won't be at the game tonight since they refuse to skip our actual teams practice... I'll work on getting them out for the game on August 9th. Finally, the lyrics on the website missed one word in the first line. It should read:

"Outside the lonely Stelco walls..."

Mike.

I'm not exactly sure why the Toronto team is called the Lynx, but it is. The colour scheme is wrong for the city, but at least they've stuck with it for a couple of years now after some really garish looking unis in earlier years (the purple, the scraping paw).

As far as bringing back the Blizzard, now is not the time. Although I didn't live in Toronto when the Blizzard were around, I do have a healthy amount of respect for the name. With the Lynx playing out in Etobicoke, I suggest that waiting until the new Toronto stadium is completed before there is any move to resurrect the Blizzard. Having the Toronto Blizzard playing in a tiny stadium in suburban Etobicoke would diminish the brand in my opinion. Luis has been clamouring for it and predicting it for at least the four years that I've been on the board; eventually it will happen. But 2004 or 2005 isn't the right situation.

A Toronto-Hamilton rivarly would be good fun though.

*sigh* Bunbury...

Those were the days... Watson, Ianero, Fashnu (R.I.P.), Dolan (for the year and a half we had ya)...

I got all nostalgic on Monday... heros of yesteryear gone by. I was about 11-14 going to the Steeler games (I lived a few blocks away from the stadium), and I've got all the stubs to show.

I expect to be there tonight (barring unforseen weather).

Up the Thunder! (and yes, the name could have been WAY WORSE)

Salty Dog is an old naval term referring to

a lifetime sailor who lives to find an easy

woman /one night stand in whatever port he may be

in. Still used to describe an ardourous

sailor.

It also means that but you can't tell me that Syracuse named thair club after horny sailors.
