Clark Announces Men’s Under-17 Development Camp Roster

Ottawa, Ontario –Ray Clark, Director of Coaching and Player Development has announced his 18-player roster for an Under-17 Development Team training camp in Blaine, Minnesota from July 10-21, 2004.

Canada will play four matches while training in Blaine, two against the United States.

“This project allows us an additional opportunity to look at a number of new National Team prospects in a very competitive setting,” said Clark. “The US National Youth Teams have become a permanent fixture on the world stage and benefit from a full time training structure through their Residency Program; and Cruz Azul is one of Mexico’s leading Professional Clubs and operates a first class Development Program. These games will certainly provide us with a good measuring stick with which to compare the progress of our players as they move closer to the 2007 FIFA World Youth Championships.”

Clark will undoubtedly be counting upon players like goalkeeper Asmir Begovic (Edmonton, AB), striker Alex Elliott (Vancouver, BC), and midfielder Hector Contreras (Montreal, QC) for leadership. All three players were integral components of Stephen Hart’s U17 squad that narrowly missed qualifying for the FIFA U17 World Championships in 2003.

It isn't an official FIFA sanctioned competition. Why would they be cap-tied? My understanding is that only if the game is considered a senior "A" international that a player's options of switching contries before age 21 would be limited.

Question...wasn't Will Johnson an American kid at Blackburn Rovers who was also eligible for Canada (I think even trained with the US?).

Good to see we have another forward at a premier league side willing to at least play in friendlies with us.

Now only if we could have De Guzman and Lemsky....

You are correct sir, but the player may switch AFTER he turns 21 as long as he doesn't play either for the foregin Senior A team, or plays for a foreign youth team (ie: U-23) after he turns 21.

Actually, this is an older team (87 and younger) and not the 88's and younger...so with a few exceptions such as Lombardo it is the first team.

By The way I am curious about Julian Uccello? Is he not part of this age group?

first off julian is 18 years old. He is actually in town and i have spoke to him about many things. He is currently waiting for a contract to be made with the ac Milan primavera team, if that dosent work out he's goin to look elsewhere maybe serie B. Then i asked him about playing for Canada and he said thats not his main concern right now its becoming a proffesional.once he achieves that then he'll decide wheter or not he will play for canada or italy. good answer i said.

Some surprising additions from Alberta: Tos Ricketts is as fast as they come, when he's on his game he can be top class, I didn't even know Bartkus and Cuevas were in the NTC player pool. Cuevas is definitely a surprise.

No problem with concentrating on being a professional, but I hope he doesn't pull a boob move like Sandro Grande.

Also eligible for this group:

Peters, DeGuzman, Lensky, Edgar (all mentioned previously)

Manny Gomez, River Plate

Andrea Lombardo, Atalanta (good news from bigbro on another thread)

Nils Binstock, Copenhagen (Mr. Binstock, you still out there? Is Nils recovered from his broken leg?)

Bruno Napoleao, Portsmouth trial

Lots of talent coming up.

2 other players from the 88 group have also been on trials. kyle oliveira and keegan ayre have been in england the last year. kyle went to blackburn last summer and recently with tranmere. keegan went to blackburn aswell but earlier in the year (february or march area) and is off to west ham in august for another trial. good luck to both in the future.
