The Beaver
Glad to see Zurer get the opportunity to play at this level. She has long legs, loads of pace, and could become a very fine choice at the back line for the future. Now, if we could only get Boyd and Chapman healthy, we could have one of the most talented young defensive lines in all of Women's soccer.

Massive Attack
Hooper, Neil lead Canadian women TORONTO (CP) - Veterans Charmaine Hooper and Andrea Neil, who have 215 caps between them, will lead Canada against the U.S. in an exhibition soccer game Saturday in Nashville, Tenn. The game is the first for the Canadian women since early March when they failed to qualify for the Athens Olympics, losing 2-1 to Mexico. Coach Even Pellerud's 16-woman roster includes five members of the under-19 team, which is headed to Thailand in November for the world championships. The five are Aysha Jamani, Kara Lang, Veronique Maranda, Brittany Timko and Emily Zurrer. All but Zurrer have experience at the senior level. Zurrer, a defender with good skills in the air, earned her call-up to the World Cup side after she was named MVP at the recent CONCACAF under-19 qualifying tournament. The Canada match is part of the U.S. team's "Quest for Summer Glory" tour, a warmup for the Olympics. So far the Americans have beaten Brazil 5-1, blanked Mexico 3-0 and tied Japan 1-1. Future opponents include Australia and China. Striker Christine Sinclair goes into the match needing just one goal for 50. http://slam.canoe.ca/Slam/Soccer/Canada/2004/06/29/519520-cp.html
Massive Attack
Young striker can notch 50th goal for Canada in exhibition against U.S. posted July 1 @ 16:12, EST (CP) - Christine Sinclair can reach a remarkable milestone Saturday when the Canadian women's soccer team takes on the U.S. in Nashville, Tenn. Unbelievably the 21-year-old from Burnaby, B.C., is just one goal away from her 50th for the World Cup team. She has scored 49 in 64 appearances for the senior side, averaging a strike every 1.3 games. "That's a stunning number for a young girl," Canadian coach Even Pellerud said. "What more can I say that I have said about here? She has this amazing ability to be in the right spot, with good timing, and makes things look easy." Only Charmaine Hooper, with 62 goals in 115 games, has scored more for Canada at this level. Add Sinclair's 22 goals in 15 appearances with the under-19 national team and 49 goals in two seasons at the University of Portland and you have a goal machine. Sinclair, who only turned 21 on June 12, will probably be partnered up front with another phenom in 17-year-old Kara Lang for Saturday's friendly (check local listings) at the Coliseum, home of the NFL Tennessee Titans. Filling an injury void, Lang played defence most recently for the under-19 team at a world championship qualifying event. But she likes playing striker and has 21 goals in 41 games for the Canadian World Cup squad. Saturday's game is the first for Canada since failing to qualify for the Athens Olympics at a disastrous tournament in March. Pellerud's 16-woman roster for the U.S. game includes five members of the under-19 team, which is headed to Thailand in November for the world championships. The five are Lang, Aysha Jamani, Veronique Maranda, Brittany Timko and Emily Zurrer. All but Zurrer have experience at the senior level. Zurrer, a defender with good skills in the air, earned her call-up to the World Cup side after she was named MVP at the CONCACAF under-19 qualifying tournament. Pellerud opted for the under-19 players to help their preparation for the world championships in Thailand in November. The Canada match is part of the U.S. team's "Quest for Summer Glory" tour, a warmup for the Olympics. The U.S. named its 18-player Olympic roster Thursday and included seven gold medallists from the Olympic team in 1996: Mia Hamm, Brandi Chastain, Briana Scurry, Joy Fawcett, Julie Foudy, Kristine Lilly and Cindy Parlow. Since its victories in the 1996 Olympics and 1999 World Cup, the U.S. won the silver medal at the 2000 Sydney Games and finished third at last year's World Cup. In their Olympic preparations so far, the Americans have beaten Brazil 5-1, blanked Mexico 3-0 and tied Japan 1-1. Future opponents include Australia and China. "The American squad has a tendency to under perform in friendly games during the year but they know how to peak for a tournament and they know how to peak against Canada," Pellerud said. Sinclair isn't the only Canadian to hit a milestone recently. Andrea Neil should win her 101st cap Saturday and needs one goal for her 20th. "She represents the continuity of the team," Pellerud said of the 32-year-old midfielder from Vancouver. "And I'm very happy to have some of those players on the roster, who do not always get the headlines but are there - for unselfish reasons - helping out the younger players on a daily basis. ... Andrea is one of those few phenomenal team leaders you can always count on. "Without always being a star on the field, she is always a star outside it." Notes: Canada will play a pair of games in Japan on July 30 and Aug. 4 at Tokyo's National Stadium. ... Goalkeeper Karina LeBlanc is out with a knee injury, suffered while playing for the Montreal Xtreme against the national under-19 team. LeBlanc, ironically, was hurt in a collision with Kara Lang. ... Pellerud says he has high hopes for under-19 goalie Stacey Van Boxmeer but elected not to rush her into the senior side with both Erin McLeod and Taryn Swiatek available to stand in for LeBlanc. But Pellerud says the young goalie is one to watch. "She was absolutely brilliant," in the under-19 world championship qualifying, he said. ... Defender Sharolta Nonen was not picked for the U.S. game because she is not currently affiliated with a team. She is scheduled to play for Montreal later in the season. http://www.sportsnet.ca/soccer/shownews.jsp?content=R070106AU
