beachesl
Just when you thought you were starting to figure it out...... http://news.bbc.co.uk/sport2/hi/football/3795239.stm ------------------------------------------------------------------- League gets revamp Division One is to be known as The Championship as the Football League looks to raise the profile of the three tiers below the Premiership. Divisions Two and Three will be re-named League One and League Two. With the top flight dominating media and public attention, the League hopes the changes will boost awareness. "The Championship is a term steeped in the history of the League. It will place a new emphasis on its status," chairman Sir Brian Mawhinny said. The standard of football in the lower divisions has been heavily criticised in recent years. Teams promoted from Division One have struggled to survive in the Premiership - Wolves and Leicester suffered instant relegation last season. But Mawhinny is a firm fan of 'The Championship' and wants to build on the fact that the League enjoyed its best attendances in 40 years last term. "Not only is it a gateway to the Premiership, it is one of Europe's leading league competitions, in terms of the standard of football, the stadia and the numbers of supporters attending," he insisted. "We want our games to become ever more attractive, not only to our core audience, but also to a new generation of youngsters on the brink of discovering the game. "We also want a commercial audience to be encouraged to re-evaluate its perception of the League."
Free kick
Now that is confusing. It's really misleading and confuses people when making the distinction between tier one, two, three and four. Then again, maybe that is the intent. Never been a fan of referring to players who play in the first division as first division players when its really second tier. Or worst, second division players when its really third tier. When you think of the third division as being the fourth tier tyou realize that that is a huge drop in competitiveness regardless of the sport or country. Thats why I have questioned value of following the activities or players and clubs that at that level of play unless you are a direct supporter of those clubs. I still get a bit of a kick when I hear that so and so so player playing at that level should be considered for a national side. For the longest time, the premiership was known as the english first division. It was renamed, as I recall, at the time when the league and the players were at work conflict a few years ago. But I don't think it was right to rename the second tier the 1st division.
Massive Attack
That's more retarded than the CPSL calling it self "Canadian" and "Professional".
Alberto7
Agree with you all on this one. Basically the 4th level will now be called League Two. How idiotic and confusing is that? I guess stupid moves are not limited to North American soccer leagues...
Michael Crampton
Ugh... When Saturday Comes had a small editorial about this a few months back but I never thought it would actually happen. What the hell is "The Championship" and why is the fourth tier of English Football now called Div.2? Idiots, idiots, idiots. As always it's the shortsighted bosses running the game who try to do everything the can to prevent real fans from enjoying the sport they love. I guess some things are the same in every country (see: NHL lockout - I don't care but a hell of a lot of people in this country will). Mike. mattbin
Does this remind anyone else of when CONCACAF was renamed "the Confederation"? It's not a good sign when you're following Jack Warner's lead. Of course, we're probably not the world's second division either... Allez les Rouges, M@
DarnCherry
I hope it confuses everybody so bad that they nobody goes to the games.
Cheeta
Eh? Sorry. So am if I understand correctly, Exeter now play where? Whoaaa!!!! Leyton Orient suddenly rock! Didn't see that coming! Well ****! That'll pack in them into Old Slaughterhouse for sure! Dose this mean Old Slaughterhouse is going to get floodlights and a fence down the south touchline to keep the ball out of the Thames? Floodlights would be nice but I think the fence could wait until they replace some of the patchs of gravel on the pitch with sod... What a load of rubbish. argh1
AHHHHHH, let's see if I got this straight. The Barclay Card Premiership is tier 1 The Vanilla Coke Championship is tier 2 The Fanta Rootbeer League One is tier 3 The Sprite League Two is tier 4 The Nationwide National Conference is tier 5 The Builders Trust South and North Conferences are tier 6 The Ryman Isthmian Premier, The Dr Martens Southern Premier , The Unibond Northern Premier Leagues are tiers 7 All presented by tylenol. Some marketing wizard has way to much time on his hands. Apologies to sponsors real or fictitous.
Canadienfan
How much of an idiot do you have to be by thinking renaming a league somehow makes a difference! People who didn't support div 1 before now will because its called the championship. yeah right!
Guest Jeffery S.
I am really hoping Scotland tries to match this so we can all have a good laugh. And Norway, always trying to model themselves on England, might have to reconsider, since their Div. 1 is 2nd tier. Maybe it is all about making sponsors happier as having your name associated with League One sound better than Div. 2. Anyone know if Nationwide stays on as overall under-EPL pro leagues sponsor? It is bad enough that third tier in Spain is called 2B, and then you go to Third division, and everytime you mention it you have to explain it. Coca-Cola was already set to replace Nationwide for next season before these changes were announced. Hence there is certainly a suspicion that Coca-Cola, as a new sponsor, had something to do with these changes. I saw a brief clip on Sky Sports News where some league official was denying that possibility (as if he would admit it). quote:It is bad enough that third tier in Spain is called 2B, and then you go to Third division, and everytime you mention it you have to explain it.Yeah, Italy has the same problem with C1 = 3rd tier, C2 = 4th tier, D = 5th tier. But everything below that is very nice compared to England because it's standardized across all regions. As much as the English pyramid is held up as a model, I think Italy's (and probably others as well, but I'm not familiar enough with them) is much better.
