I don't follow Irish domestic football, but I just returned from five weeks backpacking through the republic and the North. I went to Ballymena for the Under-16 tournament and saw their stadium. When I was in the south, I took the train from Cork to Cobh one morning where that night there was to be a league cup game between Ramblers and Cork City. Unfortunately, I had a heavy cold at the time and there wasn't enough in Cobh to keep me there the last 3 or 4 hours before gametime. (Roy Keane started with Cobh Ramblers and I was looking forward to seeing their park.)

One thing on this trip compared to two years ago when I travelled in Ireland was the increased or renewed popularity of hurling. I don't know if it's because there's a live game available on TV every Saturday now, but it was sure noticeable to me how much more media coverage there was of the sport, and how many more people I saw across the island wearing jerseys in support of their county.

I'm from Tyrone (1 time All-Ireland Gaelic Football Champions). Few counties are good at Hurling, just the Munster Counties (Execpt Kerry), Kilkenny, Wexford, Offaly, Galway and Antrim. Derry, Down, London and New York also play in the Ulster Hurling Championship but only get an odd win over Antrim. Gaelic is the most Popular Sport on the Island of Ireland; followed by Soccer, Rugby Union, Horse Racing, Hurling and Golf (in that Order).

I visit Ireland every couple of years...I was at Croke Park last summer and watched a hurling semifinal (Killkenny won and then went on to win the All-Ireland, I believe). It was an amazing experience - very fast game. A few years ago I watched Dublin V Kildare in a gaelic football match, which was also exciting.

Also a lot of EPL teams will arrange pre-season friendlies in Dublin, last year I saw Leeds play a local team at Tolka park (I think).

A great place to visit - the people love their sport.
