2006 WCQ - OCEANIA (PART II)</u>

[WCQ - Oceania Part I]

Okay, I guess New Zealand is mad now:

New Zealand - 10, Tahiti - 0 (5:0)

Vanuatu - 0, Australia - 3 (0:1)

Figi - 1, Solomon Islands - 2 (1:1)

Will Australia pull a Peru and lay-down for Solomon Islands in their next game?

Table</u>

Australia 4 4 0 0 19 1 12

Solomon Islands 4 3 0 1 7 4 9

New Zealand 4 2 0 2 15 5 6

Fiji 4 1 1 2 3 8 4

Vanuatu 4 1 0 3 4 7 3

Tahiti 4 0 1 3 0 23 1

Hmmm, even a tie will give the second place to the Solomons. This would definitely be to Australia's long-term advantage, as the second place team advances to the second round WCQ two-leg tie in September, 2005 (as well as the Oceania two-leg "championship" in October to decide who goes to the Confederation Cup in the summer 0f 2005). New Zealand would be much stronger over the long term, they appear to be having some fits and starts now (losing to Vanatau!). Remember that New Zealand tweaked an understrength Aussie squad in the last Oceania championship 1 1/2 years ago to go to the last Confederations Cup, and Australia are still upset about that.

Australia will probably be too sportsmanlike to be reduced to this, BUT the big goal IS to make it to the WCQ.....

Australia will only be put in this tempting position to intentionally draw if New Zealand win their earlier game against Fiji, also on June 6 at the same stadium in Adelaide ( it should be simultaneous at a different stadium, Oceania dropped the ball ).

Imagine sitting through 3 matches in the same evening in Adelaide. Boy, having gone to the A-League and W-League doubleheader in Edmonton between the Aviators teams and the Sounders teams last night, I can say that a doubleheader makes for a long night on the seats. I can't imagine what a tripleheader is like[|)]!

New Zealand defeat Fiji 2-0 and must now rely on Australia to beat Solomon Islands.

Aussies lay down? Hmm, well they fielded a weakened starting lineup, didn't get a shot in the first half hour of the match, and at halftime are losing 1-0.

A while later...

OK, the Aussies finally woke up and scored two goals in the first 8 minutes of the second half and seem to be controlling play. New Zealand, forced to cheer on their evil neighbours, breathe a sigh of relief. But Australia is down to 10 men.

More time passes...

Solomon Islands have equalized! A goal in the 76th minute. If the result stands New Zealand are out.

And finally...

It's over! Australia 2 Solomon Islands 2. New Zealand are out of ONC 2004 and WC 2006. Australia and Solomon Islands will play a home-and-away playoff this fall for the Oceania championship, then play another home-and-away playoff in the fall of 2005 (yes, a strange, strange system) to determine who will play against a South American team for a place in Germany. A great time for Solomon Islands!!! But I wonder if there's going to be a stink around this result...

Guest Jeffery S.

Australia's behaviour as a national team is consistently disgraceful. After their proud 34-0 over the U.S. Virgin Islands (was it?), pathetically running up the score, this comes along. Eliminate an opponent by throwing a match to a team that probably has never had a result against you.

I can only hope the Solomon Is. can nationalize Ailton before the tie comes along.

What a confederation.

June 5th, 2004 eliminated from Germany2006. I feel your pain, brother.

And while I'm not here to judge anyone, I will. More embarassing for Australia than New Zealand. Poor form and rather cowardly.

I'm not going to miss the Socceroos in Germany (WTF is a Socceroo anyway? Some sort of Pokemon? They don't still call themselfs that do they?).

The big run-off was aganst American Samoa, the US Virgins of the Pacific.

Of course, we Canadians feel the pain of the Kiwis. Let's hope that Belize doesn't pull a Vanatau. Let's also hope that the same thing doesn't happen to us at the end of the semis, with either Honduras or Costa Rica pulling an Aussie.

I have to take Australia's side on this one. Absolutely no one should feel sorry for New Zealand because they engineered their own downfall by losing to Vanuatu who finished last in an extremely weak qualifying group. Thus they have no business in even thinking of themselves as a possible World Cup finalist. If we lose to Belize the same will hold for us and I hope no one would complain about the injustice of the process. The World Cup is for dominant teams not teams that lose to a team that is probably little better than a good amateur men's league team and then hope that their biggest rival will be nice enough to help them qualify by risking their own spot. New Zealand put themselves in this position just as Australia's dominant play put themselves in the position of deservedly being able to determine their opponent. They also have to run up the score sometimes because their conference is such a joke and goal differential can be important. The result against the Soloman Islands may not be completely sporting but if Canada faced a similar situation in which a win would create a playoff against Guatemala and a tie a playoff against St. Vincent and the Grenadines for the CONCACAF half WC place I would fully expect Yallop to play for the tie and as CSA president would fire him if he did not. Teams that deserve to be in the World Cup make it on their own merits and if they lose games that they shouldn't like New Zealand did they should not complain (nor have I heard them complain about this result).

  • 1 year later...

It's been almost 15 months since the last match, but Oceania WCQ finally resumed today (September 3) with the first leg of the Australia vs. Solomon Islands playoff for the right to face the South American fifth-placed team in another playoff.

The first leg was played in Sydney.

Final:

Australia 7Solomon Islands 0

21' Jason Culina

36' Mark Viduka

43' Mark Viduka

57' Tim Cahill

64' Scott Chipperfield

69' Archie Thompson

89' Brett Emerton

The second leg is September 6 in Honiara, Solomon Islands.

(Recall that these two teams faced each other in a two-legged playoff for the Oceania Nations Cup championship in October 2004. Australia won 11-1 on aggregate.)

With an afternoon kickoff and Solomon Islands being 15 hours ahead of EDT, the September 6 second leg was already finished just as September 5 came to an end in eastern Canada:

Solomon Islands 1  Australia 2

17' AUS Archie Thompson

49' SOL Henry Faarodo (PK)

59' AUS Brett Emerton

Just a little closer than the first leg! 9-1 on aggregate. Australia are through (big surprise) to face the 5th-placed South American team (likely Uruguay, Colombia or Chile) in November.
