Ottawa, Ontario – Canadian Men’s World Cup Team head coach Frank Yallop today named a 16-player roster for the upcoming exhibition game against the San Jose Earthquakes on June 5, 2004. The kickoff is 7:00 p.m. PT.

The squad will fly from Toronto to San Jose on Wednesday, June 2 and will return to Toronto and Ottawa on June 6. The team will resume training in Ottawa on Tuesday, June 8 at Carleton University at 4:00 p.m.

The San Jose game will be Yallop’s final opportunity to assess players before the World Cup Qualifying series against Belize on June 13 and 16 in Kingston, Ontario.

Paul Stalteri joins the squad after winning the German Cup with Werder Bremen on Saturday to complete the domestic double. Bremen won the Bundesliga earlier in May.

Olivier Occean has returned to Norway after earning his first cap in the 1-0 loss to Wales on May 30. Mark Watson was recalled by the Charleston Battery and will miss the exhibition game but will rejoin the team in Ottawa.

“There were many positive developments in the Wales game and I am very much looking forward to returning to San Jose with Canada,” said Yallop who coached the Earthquakes to two MLS championships in three years. “This will be our final game before Belize and I have a pretty good idea of the final squad but it will give some players another chance to show me what they can do.”

I'm surprised that he isn't at least calling up another A-league central defender like Gervais or Pizzolitto in the absence of Watson.

If Norway's league is still going during the Belize series (I believe Odd Grenland played today) I wonder if that might affect Occean's availability.

With Stalteri back I wonder if that means we will see Imhof play at right half, or perhaps back in the central defensive spot.

It is too bad that we didn't bring Tony Menezes for this one, considering the small 16-player roster and that the Bay Area is about as close to China that our games are going to get.

Otherwise, a couple of A-League players would have been nice. Hope we don't get any injuries.

Looks pretty much what you will likely see against Belize. An interesting statistic is that only 3 of the sixteen player ( Devos, Hume and Bircham) are not playing in within a top tier. This should help in so far as player availability since the the new Fifa calendar ( harmonizing international dates with club matches) does not apply to lower tier clubs.

Odd Grenland has games on the 6th, 13th and 20th. That suggests that Norway has no international friendlies going and the league does not stop.

I love that Frank is trying to get our top lads playing together with some consistency, but all the same I would have liked to have seen some of the domestic and non-regular players called up. Just to get continue adding some depth as with the Barbados friendly.

But all the same, I hope we cream the 'quakes

DeRosario, Onstad will play for Canada against San Jose in an exhibition match Saturday

Earthquakes notebook Goalkeeper Pat Onstad and forward Dwayne De Rosario will be facing their San Jose teammates Saturday, as both were called up to the Canadian national team for its exhibition match against the Earthquakes at Spartan Stadium.

"I guess you'll find out which guys in the locker room don't like us," Onstad said, laughing.

The game will mark the return of coach Frank Yallop, who left the Earthquakes in December to take over the Canadian squad. Yallop was 41-25-18 in his three seasons in San Jose and led the club to two MLS Cups.

For the Canadians, the exhibition match is as important as such a game can be, since it is their last before the start of World Cup qualifying. Canada will face Belize in a two-leg, opening-round series to be played on June 13 and 16.

De Rosario and Onstad both started for Canada in a 1-0 losing effort against Wales on Sunday.

Onstad said that even though Canada didn't get the result, the team played well given it had spent little time as a complete unit. Onstad said that in the first half, many of the Canadian players appeared scared to make mistakes. And going into halftime, he said, many of them were worried about what their coach would have to say.

"But when you get into the locker room with Frank, he always wants to keep it positive," Onstad said. "He said, "Listen, you're all good players and there's no reason you can't go out there and try to express yourselves."'

man....i thought this line up was going to be a bunch of a-leaguers and a couple of mls guys...this is a serious group...am i dreaming or does radz seem to care this time 'round...i hate to be one of those fans who "believes the lads will win every time they take the field", but this team looks good...on paper, there is no reason why we cant beat all of those carribean teams in qualifying...im a sucker for heartbreak...

Let's, for a second, consider the fact that not only will San Jose be missing two of its best players, but that those two players will be suiting up for us. Is anyone else concerned about how this factor will effect the challenge, and as a result the potential benefits of preperation, that this game provides?

Definitely best team on paper in a long time. Our midfield is definitely the weak link. We are still not capable at this time of mounting an attack through midfield against decent opposition. Definitely apparent by the lack of opportunities in the Wales match. Hopefully it pulls together over the next few months before the next round of qualifying.

we dont have any real attacking midfielders , our top midfielders play mostly defensive roles with their clubs. In my opinion that is our biggest weakness, i also agree this team of ours looks good on paper. I believe that we will qualify for 2006 , and i really have no doubts just optimism at this point in time.

One thing to keep in mind about the starting midfield in Wales - they had never played together as a group before. Hume & Atiba hadn't played for the national team there since coming on in the 2nd half against Cuba, De Guzman's last appearance was prior to that against Germany and Brennan's was even further back, against Estonia. It's not surprising that they didn't immediately click to perfection against Wales.

I don't see how our midfield is the weak link. We could, if we wanted to, start an EPL player, two Bundesliege guys and a Cup winner with champions league experience in Portugal. That's pretty good no matter who you are.

DeGuzman has to pull the strings. He's used more to harass and harry the opponents with Hannover I'm assuming, but he has been the creator for most of his career and hopefully he can slide back into that role.

I was disappointed that Brennan didn't get more time to try to involve himself in the game against Wales. Hopefully he gets 90 against San Jose. Though their postage stamp field may not suit his abilities best.

cheers,

matthew
