Marin Pusek makes his Lynx debut, on the field in place of Ali In-Goon. Glad to see we've taken off our best striker now that we are two-goals down, though we do have a game tomorrow.

Why didn't these two teams play each other last weekend, rather than twice this weekend?

Marin is not playing, there must of been a mistake on the roster sheet.
Or the sheet is correct & the commentators are wrong - they've been getting a lot of other names wrong so this wouldn't surprise me.

Is Marin definitely injured? They've called his name again as Di Tullio picked up a yellow card for fouling him (whoever he may actually be).

The back-to-back games that the A-league schedules are crazy. Only baseball (for which physicla exertion is limited) does this.

The individual teams create the schedule in the A-League, so don't blame the league, blame the teams GM's.

Good question. I think that there is no thought given to the schedule by the GMs and whoever come up with it.

I ask the same about last Saturdays Calgary-Vancouver game. Both had to play the next day, so why didn't they schedule it for the Friday night and give both teams a day off to rest? As it was they both got blown out the next night. I've heard all sorts of excuses for back to back game, such as cost saving etc, but in both cases neither team in both these games saved a dime by playing these games back to back.

Oh heck, the colour commentator is Grant Needham!

The main commentator is Dino Sisto, English voice of the Montreal Canadiens for a decade --- ie. a professional. This duo has been doing Impact games for a couple of years now --- ie. they are not beginners. Given this, I'm surprised they make so many mistakes.

Funny about Sisto, apparently he's gotten into fights with other reporters (during media scrums, I take it) on three separate occasions while covering the Canadiens. And throughout the Boston Bruins playoff series and at least the beginning of the Tampa Bay Lightning series he was suspended from CJAD, for unannounced reasons but rumours indicated a bust-up with his colour commentator.

And hockey and basketball. One of the commentators said this which is simply not true.

This game may not have been scheduled during Victoria Day weekend due to Montreal's friendly against that Haitian team. But it still should have been played earlier in the week.

Seems that some Impact fans didn't make a good impression on a-league.com reporter and phtographer (and everything else) Allison Andrews.

Apparently after being given a Portland Timbers scarf as a token of friendship they tried to burn it and then they hurled insults at her in both french and english. Then one Montreal fan got into her face ant told her that she wasn't welcome there. What a load of winners in Montreal!

From CP through Canoe:

Montreal Impact score three in second half for 4-1 win over Lynx

MONTREAL (CP) - Joel John Bailey broke a tie three minutes into the second half and Mauricio Vincello and Freddie Commodore added insurance goals as the Montreal Impact beat the Toronto Lynx 4-1 in A-League soccer Friday.

Canadian international Nevio Pizzolitto gave the Impact a shortlived 1-0 lead in the 25th minute before 6,831 at Claude-Robillard Sports Complex.

But just three minutes later, the Lynx (2-4-0) equalized when striker Ali Gerba's kick deflected off the post then off Impact goalkeeper Greg Sutton before going in.

It was credited as an own goal and was the first conceded in five games by the Impact (4-0-1) this season.

After Bailey scored in the 48th minute, Vincello made it 3-1 in the 69th and Commodore iced things during injury time.

"We played very well in the first half and were right in the game," said Lynx coach Duncan Wilde. "We gave away three goals off of free kicks and when that happens at this level it is tough to win."

The Lynx and Impact meet again Saturday in Toronto.

From the Montreal Gazette:

Impact's offence erupts

Dominate play in air to score 4 times Impact 4, Lynx 1. First-half fluke goal ends goalie Sutton's shutout streak at 424 minutes

The Gazette

May 29, 2004

Goalkeeper Greg Sutton's shutout streak came to an end, but the Impact remained unbeaten as it crushed the Toronto Lynx 4-1 in the first game of a home-and-away series that concludes tonight in Toronto.

"It's tough when you give up a goal on a fluke, but the guys came up big tonight," said Sutton, who suffered from some bad luck in the 28th minute. Ali Gerba, who played for the Impact last season as Ali Ngon, was credited with a goal as his header hit the post, came out and bounced in off Sutton.

"They had a crossing play and he flicked it," Sutton said. "I couldn't dive because it would have taken me out of the play. When I heard it hit the post, I turned and it bounced off my shoulder."

The goal came after Sutton and the Impact started the season with a string of 424 scoreless minutes.

Sutton atoned for that miscue midway through the second half when he made a diving stop on a howitzer from Gerba and his teammates dominated play in the air to score a season-high four goals.

Patrick Leduc had a hand in the first three goals as he set up Nevio Pizzolitto for the game's first goal off a free kick in the 25th minute and then combined with Joel Bailey for what proved to be the winner on a similar play in the 48th minute.

"Technically, we made a lot of mistakes but we were able to take advantage of our set pieces," Leduc said. "The guys did a good job of getting in position."

"Pat did a good job of getting those passes in there," said Pizzolitto, who is coming off abdominal surgery. He's still not 100 per cent and while he played the full 90 minutes last night, he won't play in the rematch.

The Impact enjoyed success even when Leduc wasn't able to find someone in scoring position. His free kick in the 69th minute came back out from a scramble in front of the net, but defender Mauricio Vincello scored on a 30-yard screamer along the ground.

Ze Roberto completed the scoring with yet another header, converting a free kick from Nikola Budalic in the 89th minute. Vincello and Budalic are both former Lynx players.

"If we had played a better game technically, we would have dominated them even further, but what you saw tonight was a strong effort from everyone," said coach Nick DeSantis, whose team improved its record to 4-0-1. "I was particularly happy the way the some of the guys like Nicky (Budalic), Freddy Commodore and Darko (Kolic) came off the bench and made things happen."

The rivalry between the two teams is bitter and hard feelings were evident throughout the game. Toronto was handed five of seven yellow cards with Toronto's Adrian Serioux being ejected in the final minute when he was handed two cautions.

As time ran out, DeSantis became involved in a shoving match with Toronto coach Duncan Wilde.

"I just went over to shake his hand," DeSantis explained. "That's okay, it will make (today's) game more interesting."

IMPACT REMAIN UNBEATEN

Date: Friday, May 28, 2004

Venue: Claude-Robillard Sports Complex

Final Score: Montreal 4 Toronto 1

Match Summary: The Toronto Lynx renewed their rivalry with the Montreal Impact tonight in front of 6,831 fans at Montreal's Claude-Robillard Sports Complex. The teams felt each other out for the first 20 minutes, with neither conceding many goal scoring opportunities, before Canadian National team member Nevio Pizzolitto, playing his first match of the season due to injury, put the Impact in front after 25 minutes converting a freekick cross from Patrick Leduc. The Lynx equalized minutes later when Lynx striker and former Impact player, Ali Gerba's flick deflected off the post then Impact goalkeeper, Greg Sutton before finding the back of the net. The goal, credited as an own goal, was the first conceded in five games by the Impact this season. The equalizer seemed to give the Lynx some confidence and they took the play to the Impact for the remaining 20 minutes of a scrappy first half. Coming out of the break, the Impact again took a one goal lead after just minutes when Joel John Bailey headed home another freekick cross from Leduc. Mauricio Vincello gave the Impact at 2 goal lead with a volley from 25 yards out after 69 minutes in his first match against his former team. Despite several quality chances, the Lynx would get no closer as substitute Freddie Commodore added an insurance goal in extra time. The game finished 4-1 in favour of the Impact. "We played very well in the first half and were right in the game," said Lynx Head Coach, Duncan Wilde. "We gave away 3 goals off of free kicks and when that happens at this level it is tough to win. We will address some issues tonight and have another go at them tomorrow". The loss drops the Lynx record 2-4-0 on the season with the Impact improving to 4-0-1.
