De Vos has won 40 caps for Canada

Ipswich Town have completed the signing of defender Jason de Vos from Division One rivals Wigan in a three-year deal.

De Vos joins the Tractor Boys on a free transfer after his contract at the JJB Stadium ended this summer.

"I'm delighted Jason decided to join us. He is a strong, outstanding centre-half who will keep our goals against to a minimum," said boss Joe Royle.

"He's also a threat from set-pieces and it's a strong statement of intent from this club," he told Ipswich's website.

Royle added: "We are not satisfied with fifth place in the table and we will be going all out to finish in the top two next season."

The 30-year-old Canadian spent three years with Wigan after joining for £500,000 from Scottish outfit Dundee.

Good stuff. It would be nice to see him stay and do well with Wigan,

His time had come with us i'm afraid. The fact that we initially offered him a two year contract then withdrew it and offered just a one year deal to him pretty much summed up the second half of his season.

All the best to him anyway.

Lack of pace is a major problem for him at the moment. It seems all those bones that he's broken in his feet over the last 3 years while he's been with us have had an adverse effect on him.

Interesting. Two teams more or less in the same position with more or less the same ambition - promotion - coming to different conclusions. Wigan feeling Div 1 is the upper limit of Jason's reach and Ipswich figuring he is a missing piece to promotion and would at least be sub material in the Premier League. I guess we'll see in the next two years who has made the more accurate projection.

Ipswich Town have agreed a deal with big centre back Jason de Vos to join the Division One side for next season.

The Canadian international will sign a three-year deal with the Portman Road club following talks with Town boss Joe Royle on Tuesday.

The Suffolk outfit won the chase for the former Darlington, Dundee United and Wigan Athletic man - with Cardiff City and Stoke City also showing their interest in the defender.

The 30-year-old, whose current deal at The JJB Stadium had come to an end, was not satisfied with the terms of a new deal offered by The Latics and he has opted for a free transfer move to Ipswich instead.

De Vos told skysports.com that he was excited by his move to such an ambitious club in Ipswich and stressed he had not made any decisions on his future beyond his new three-year deal at Town.

"Obviously, I'm very excited. There a fantastic football club and the set-up down there is superb," de Vos told skysports.com.

"The manager and coaching staff are very well thought of in the game and I'm delighted to be joining such an ambitious club and I can't wait for the season to get going.

"I'm only looking at this as a three-year commitment at the minute.

"In three years time, we'll assess the situation of where we want to be as a family and what I want to do professionally.

"At this stage, it's far too early to say."

The centre back is not the only Canadian international to play for the East Anglian side, as current Canada boss Frank Yallop and former Town goalkeeper Craig Forrest were club favourites back in the 1990's.

De Vos is currently with Yallop and the rest of the Canadian squad in Wales, as they prepare to face Mark Hughes' side in a friendly at Wrexham on Sunday before opening their World Cup qualifying campaign at home next month.

Sounds like a very good move for De Vos. Didn't take the man any time at all to find a more favorable contract with a new employer.

Wondering who'll he'll be paired with? Certainly Royle must have some sort of combination in mind and it would be interesting to see if he's utilised in the same fashion as Jewell had.

Dose sound like a very good move. Funny how things sometimes start out sort of crappy but seem to end up happening for a reason.

From the Toronto Star:

Canadian star de Vos moves to Ipswich

CHRIS YOUNG

SPORTS REPORTER

Jason de Vos is on the move.

The big central defender and captain of the Canadian national soccer team signed a three-year deal with Ipswich Town of the English First Division yesterday.

Cardiff and Stoke were also in the running for de Vos, who has been with Wigan Athletic for the past three seasons but turned down the club's offer and left as a free transfer.

"Obviously, I'm very excited," he told Sky Sports. "They're a fantastic football club and the set-up down there is superb."

Canadian national team coach Frank Yallop and former keeper turned TV analyst Craig Forrest also played at Ipswich.

De Vos, a veteran of 43 international matches, is in Wales with his Canadian teammates, preparing to face their hosts Sunday in Wrexham as part of their final preparations for their opening World Cup qualifying match June 13 against Belize.

The Tractor Boys finished fifth in the First Division this season, but were defeated by West Ham in the promotion playoff semifinal round.

With Matt Elliott returning to Leicester after being loaned to Ipswich, manager Joe Royle was left with a hole in the middle of his backline and filled it with the 6-foot-4 , 205-pound de Vos, a native of London, Ont.

"He's a strong, outstanding centre half who will keep our goals against to a minimum," Royle told the team's Web site.

"He's also a threat from set-pieces and it's a strong statement of intent from this club."

Sports net article on DeVos, Great that he got a three year deal with A club like Ipswich. Interesting note at the bottom saying Pozniak was not released by his club for the call up. Looks like we are really thin at the back and looks even more likely that Watson will see some playing time.

Committed to Canada

Jason DeVos, a hard-nosed defender from Appin, Ont., has played for Canada 43 times since making his debut against Iran in 1997.

TORONTO -- Jason deVos has sorted out his club soccer future and that's good news for Canada.

The big defender, out of contract at Wigan, has signed a three-year deal with English First Division side Ipswich Town. That means he's available to play in Canada's first round of World Cup qualifying against Belize next month in Kingston, Ont.

It also means he will play a pair of tuneup matches: Sunday against Wales in Wrexham, and June 5 in San Jose against the MLS Earthquakes.

"It was a concern for me being out of contract," deVos said Thursday from the Canadian team hotel outside Chester, England. "I wasn't sure if I'd be able to play in these games if I couldn't get my contract situation sorted out. But I'm glad that it's all done and dusted and I'm here now and raring to go, and really looking forward to the challenge ahead."

The move to Ipswich continues a Canadian link to the East Anglia club. Current Canadian national team coach Frank Yallop played there from 1982 to 1996 while former goalkeeper and current TV analyst Craig Forrest was a member of the Tractor Boys from 1985 to 1997.

"A great move," Yallop said Thursday of deVos' switch. "It's a wonderful club. I have some great memories there . . . It's really my only club to be honest, playing-wise.

"The fans are fantastic, the ground's great, the people there are really friendly. He'll have a really good time there."

DeVos, 30, wasn't necessarily looking to leave Wigan, which finished seventh in the First Division last season. But the club was somewhat tardy in offering him a new contract and deVos was not happy with the terms.

Plus when the offer of a two-year deal finally came, it was February -- one month after deVos was allowed to speak to other clubs. So he explored his options, with interest coming from Ipswich, Stoke City and Cardiff City among others. .

Still he says he chose Ipswich over more lucrative offers. He liked the setup of the club, from the 30,311 capacity of Portman Road stadium to its staff and squad.

While happy to land in Ipswich, getting there involved a side of soccer deVos does not enjoy.

"It is a business and it's a horrible business to be in as a footballer. Because you are just a piece of property that kind of gets traded about as a commodity," said deVos, who has also played for Dundee United and Darlington. "There doesn't seem to be a great deal of commitment to players in today's games unfortunately from clubs."

Ipswich has a proud history. Founded in 1878 -- although the team did not enter the Football League until 1938 -- the club was a founding member of the Premier League. It was relegated in 1995 but won promotion in 2000, only to fall again in 2002.

Its trophy case includes the FA Cup (1978) and the UEFA Cup (1981). And former managers include England bosses Alf Ramsey (who won the World Cup in 1966) and Sir Bobby Robson. The current manager is Joe Royle, a former star player and veteran manager.

The addition of deVos should be good news for Ipswich, which leaked goals this season despite finishing fifth in the First Division with a 21-15-10 record, losing 2-1 on aggregate to West Ham in the semifinals of the promotion playoff.

Ipswich scored 84 goals last season, tops in the division, but gave up 72. Only 19th-place Burnley (77) and No. 24 Wimbledon (89) let more in.

DeVos, a hard-nosed defender from Appin, Ont., has played for Canada 43 times since making his debut against Iran in 1997.

He served as skipper under former manager Holger Osieck but Yallop said Thursday he has yet to decide on his captain. DeVos says he is not concerned about possibly not wearing the armband.

"It's not going to change me as a player or as a person. I'm still going to go out and play the game exactly the way I play it."

Notes : Defender Chris Pozniak did not make it to the Canadian camp for the game against Wales. A team spokesman said his Norwegian club, Haugesund, had refused to release him.

OMG! Check out the last line two sentences of the article - Chris Pozniak's club has refused to release him for the camp. Now we're really going to be hard up at right back. (I wonder if it's too late to call up Tam.)

From the Suffolk Evening Star:

Yallop sways De Vos deal

May 27, 2004 12:34

FORMER favourite Frank Yallop helped to persuade Jason De Vos to sign for Ipswich.

Yallop, who was the Town fans' player of the year in 1988, is now the Canada boss and gave the Ontario-born central defender a glowing report about the club and Suffolk in general.

Former Wigan skipper De Vos, who has signed a three-year contract at Portman Road, said: “Frank could not speak highly enough about Ipswich and the area, and he urged me to sign.”

De Vos, 30, rejected a better financial offer from Cardiff and was also wanted by Stoke - but when Town boss Joe Royle provided a guided tour of the Town set-up he was instantly hooked.

He added: “Once I had been round the training facilities and the manager drove me around the area and talked about the club's ambitions I was convinced it would be the right move.”

De Vos was due in Wales yesterday, for a second chat with Cardiff boss Lennie Lawrence, but instead he cancelled and rang Royle to tell him his decision.

The former Montreal Impact, Darlington and Dundee United star added: “Other clubs offered more lucrative deals but the three-year contract was a factor.

“My little girl will soon be two years old and it is important for her to be settled. So many people have told me what a lovely part of the country it is to live in.”

At 6ft 4in tall, De Vos is renowned for his heading prowess and he went on: “That is a big part of my game, the big, strong, physical aspect with aerial ability at both ends of the pitch.

“I'm very ambitious and like every player I want to be playing in the Premiership. With Ipswich I feel we can do that.”

De Vos is now with his Canada colleagues in Chester ahead of Sunday's friendly against Wales in Wrexham, which will signal his 44th senior cap. The squad jet back across the Atlantic on Monday and will take on Yallop's former club, San Jose Earthquakes, on June 5.

Then comes the start of Canada's World Cup qualifying campaign with home and away games against Belize before he returns to England on June 17, just 11 days before the Town squad assemble for pre-season training.

But De Vos played down suggestions that he could miss as many as ten club games because of his likely international commitments over the next few months.

He said: “The First Division is a very competitive league with a lot of international players. Many of the games scheduled are during international breaks any way and I'm hoping that games will be called off then.

“At every club I have been at I have worked hard to honour my club commitments, even if that has meant pencilling myself out of squads for friendlies and some tournaments.”

Captain, Oh My Captain!

http://news.bbc.co.uk/sport2/hi/football/teams/d/derby_county/3779343.stm

-------------------------------------------------------------------

Derby miss out on De Vos

Derby manager George Burley says his successor as Ipswich boss Joe Royle beat him in signing Jason De Vos.

The 30-year-old Canada defender was also wanted by Cardiff and Stoke.

Burley said: "Joe has got himself a very good player. I went in for Jason and spoke to his agent, but I am afraid Derby could not afford him.

"We still have some players on Premiership wages, as Ipswich do, and we have to be realistic about the amount of money we can spend."

Burley added: "It is a juggling act and all the clubs are in the same boat these days. You can't spend what you have not got."
