The Champions are out!

Cruz Azul reach Mexican quarter-finals

Pachuca Hidalgo - Mexico, May 23 - Argentine strikers Luciano Figueroa (Argentina's Olympic squad member) and Cesar Delgado (Argentina's National team member, expected to start vs Brazil) scored second-half goals as Cruz Azul beat Pachuca 2-0 to reach the Mexican championship quarter-finals and eliminate the titleholders.

Figueroa, who scored both goals as Cruz Azul won the first leg of the play-off tie 2-1, headed in a rebound in the 66th minute of Saturday's match and Argentine international Delgado added the second with an angled shot in injury time.

Pachuca coach Victor Vucetich was sent off for dissent after the first goal.

The win completed a remarkable recovery by Cruz Azul, who finished second in their qualifying stage group despite an early run of six successive defeats which led to the downfall of former Mexico coach Enrique Meza.

They staged a revival under his replacement Luis Fernando Tena but still had to play-off for their quarter-final place as they had the worst record of the second-placed teams and fewer points than Pachuca, the best third-placed team.

Cruz Azul face Chiapas in their quarter-final.

What's the story behind the attendance figure of ZERO for the America x Toluca game? I noticed the stands looked pretty empty when watching the highlights. I didn't know it was THAT empty though!
