Guest Can. in UK
Wigan announced the release of a couple players today and Paul Jewell had the following to say in regards to Jason De Vos: "Although we also have several players out of contract we have offered tham all new deals, be they verbal or written... We have some very god Bosman's here and I know there's been plenty of interest in... Jason De Vos for example, so we'll have to see what the future holds... they've all been offered new deals and are thinking them over but I would not criticise any of my players for taking their time to see what's on offer..." batch
Just going to post about this. Just picked up our weekly local paper here in Wigan and our chairman says that De Vos was offerd a one year contract which his agent told him to refuse. Apparantly he's going to play in "america" (according to our Chairman) which i presume will mean the MLS.
Guest Can. in UK
Could it also mean a possible return to the A-League? CRINGE!

SeanKeay
Well, maybe the mls might be good for him. He might want to be close to home and might of been offered good cash to play in the mls. So i dont see a huge problem if he was to go there. THO the lynx are having a tough time at centre back Well i can dream cant I?
Free kick
quote:Originally posted by Can. in UK Could it also mean a possible return to the A-League? CRINGE! I doubt it that he will end up in the a-league. I am surprised to here that he wouldn't mind a move to the MLS given that Wigan is not far off from a promotion to the EPL. Gordon
The whole 'could play in america' bit could easily be a negotiating tactic as well. I can see why DeVos might want a contract that was a tad longer than one year. If he helps Wigan get promoted, he isn't necessarily going up with the team. Two plus years, with an EPL wage, "in the event of promotion" is a lot more attractive than thanks for the help, good luck with your next team. Alberto7
I have absolutely no problem with DeVos playing in the MLS. I believe he would be a dominant player in that league. From what I have seen in the last couple of years, MLS has greatly improved. We're not at EPL level by any stretch but there has been a noticable improvement. Once MLS expands to 12 or 14 teams, it will be a lot closer to most 1st division leagues around the world(at least in terms of number of teams. Ten teams just doesn't cut it for me). Exclude Celtic and Rangers and I'm sure any MLS team could beat any other SPL team. I would love to see him in the A-league, but that would not be good for his career. Another plus is that he would be readily available for any CONCACAF games (friendlies or whatever)with the National team. Albert
Peschfan
I think De vos should look around for any First Division clubs interested in him. Im sure there are a few. If he can gt a 2 year deal with a decent club he will have a chance at promotion. I dont think he should throw away his EPL dream yet. MLS while it is improved would still be a step back in my opinion. Defenders are the unsung heroes and go unnoticed. Its not like a striker where the goals speak for them selves, or clean sheets with a Keeper. where he could move back. He needs to stick around to be noticed. I think he should stay in england if not stay with Wigan and try to negotiate a 2 year deal out of them. I mean he is the captain so im sure he could probably work something out. Cheeta
Couple of things. Gordon's post. My thoughts exactly, pretty much down to the letter. Beat me to it. Will add money and terms may improve for JDV once some other contracts become settled one way or another and certain players who Wigan's people have had their eye on fall out of the picture. If however Jewell's willing to play cute and risk loosing a vital center 'back, I would read this in rather more glum terms if I were in the De Vos camp. And I don't think there's a club in MLS who could go into Pittodrie on their best day and come away with a point never mind a win. So there. Better off staying in the English 1st, Jason. Did I mention Aberdeen finished in the **** half of the SPL this season?
batch
and a bit from our local daily paper in Wigan today- "Skipper Jason de Vos could join the list of departures with a number of clubs interested in his services. But the Canadian has rubbished reports that he is off to play in the United States and still hopes to extend his stay at Wigan."
marcl_19
at thisn point he could do better than MLS and i hope that he stays either oin the 1st divition (or maybe to one of the 1st divsion clubs moving up this year....possibly too soon for that) guys dont even joke about the a-league......im gonna have nitemares otnight just b/c of that comment... signed, Marc, permently shaken
batch
And todays news- Meanwhile, skipper Jason de Vos will explore his options over the next few days after only being offered a one-year contract by Latics. He is starting talks with a number of clubs who have expressed an interest in his services for next season and beyond. Cardiff City are one of the clubs thought to be chasing him, with Lennie Lawrence keen to add an experienced centre-half to the Bluebirds squad. But de Vos definitely won't be heading for the United States as has been reported elsewhere. He said: "I was very surprised to read I was going to the States, and that is not an option at this stage of my career. "I'm talking to a whole host of clubs in the next couple of days, while there is also the offer here at Wigan."
marcl_19
one thing to remember guys, wigan was recently in div 2....its not uncommon for recently promoted teams do do well their first year and theng o back down the 2nd.....(ipswich anyone?) Maybe it wouldnt be so bad if he went to one of the more established 1st div clubs.......then again, maybe it wasnt just a fluke.
Guest Jeffery S.
I think the real point here is that an offer for one year for someone who is not well into their thirties is a crap offer. Regardless of money. It leaves you up in the air in a year's time when you don't know if your level or health will be as good as now. I think de Vos will find a fine 1st Div club who will offer him two or three years and he'll take it. But is sure is odd that Wigan is effectively kicking him out by the one-year offer, esp. considering he's the captain. That is insulting; de Vos can do better. Peschfan
Well De Vos turned 30 at the turn of the year. Maybe its a policy not to offer extended deals to players in their thirties. Personally, i think that is a crap excuse. Players are playing much longer these days, and for a defender its even less significant. De Vos is the captain and has been a key player for them ever since hes been there. He and should be offered at least a 2 year contract. But if wigan wont give it then he should find another club who will. I agree I think he can do better. Or maybe he needs better representatives. Reza
Maybe they just felt that JDV would be useful to them in div1 and they are only going to be in Div1 for one more year and then off to the Premiership. If they get promoted to Premiership, a 31 year old Devos probably would not be as useful for them and I am sure Wigan is really gunning for the top league. An Observer
I think with money being tight these days, many clubs are not willing to over someone over 30 long term deals and two years seems to be a long term these days. Radzinski i believe has found himself in a similar position with Everton.
batch
Our chairmans reasoning was that De Vos was 31 (i know he's only 30 - our Chaiman must be going senile) and we "have to be careful who we give contracts to" according to him. Money isnt a problem, the Chairman is worth £300m and has ploughed £40+m into Wigan. He did however say once he took Paul Jewell on as our manager 3 years ago that we wouldnt sign players who were over the age of 30. Off the top of my head we've only gone againt that once to sign our 36 year old reserve goalkeeper. So maybe thats what it is all down to. But by the sounds the manager is making it doesnt look like he'll get offered a longer contract- Jewell says he understands why record scorer Andy Liddell and de Vos are considering offers to play elsewhere. Liddell has stated he won't be accepting Latics' offer of a new one-year deal and is set to sign for Sheffield United. De Vos is also unhappy with a similar deal and is speaking to other clubs. Jewell said: "Andy is in demand and I'm sure Jason won't be short of offers. "They have to do what they think is right for themselves and I've no problem with that. "One thing I have always banged on about is these lads have given me everything and deserve to look after themselves. "If they decide not to stop here, I will wish them all the best at their new clubs. "I know that Lids wants to play more first team football and I totally understand that." http://www.wigantoday.net/ViewArticle2.aspx?SectionID=68&ArticleID=791389
