The United States and Mexico are studying the possibility of creating a "Dual Premier League" with clubs from both countries, the President of the First Division of Mexican football, Víctor Garcés, states.

The proposal has been presented by the Mexican Federation and its counterpart in the United States to the CONCACAFcongress happening in Grenada, the director said.

"It would be an extraordinary display to take Mexican clubs to the United States and vice versa; we could make a Premier League, which would be very attractive ",commented Garcés.

Towards what end? Improving US football so they can beat the Mexicans 19 times out of 20 instead of 4 times out of 5?

On what structure?

Who's going to underwrite this adventure?

Blah, blah, blah.

Assuming the easiest thing would be to have a Cup competition involving existing club sides but who from MLS would qualify in place of Mexican sides and based on who's calculations and requirments?

A lot of talk I'm sure and maybe good discussion points but I can't see any benefit whatsoever to Mexican football. Didly-squat. So unless there's some big payday going south there's no reason for participation.

And no matter what a few suits within the Mexican federation think, I dought there is any appetite within Mexico for this type of competition. And even in the US if there is, I don't think the fan base is sufficient to finance the whole show.

Well, Garcés uses the expression "Dual Premer League" but what he is talking about, vaguely, in the article is a type of elimination tournament/cup. I think the idea is to make money from the atates like the Mexican club tournament in the southern/southwestern US did in January.

Just guessing.

Don't think outdoing NHL ratings in the US amounts to anything to anyone. Southern Ontario's TV ratings for CFL games are huge by any measurement and the driving force for a massive increase in the CFL broadcast revenues but Hamilton can't get 15,000 to come out and if Toronto could get one fifth of one percent of it's population to go to an Argos game on a regular basis they'd be laughing all the way to the bank.

But they're not. Go figure.

Are Mexican football fans in Mexico going to allow their club teams to risk time, money and injuries competeing in some useless Cup against American teams to promote football in the US? Are club managers? Dought it somehow.

At least we're agreeing on the need for fat appearance fees to buy Mexican agreement. Guess that's something.

Hamilton was drawing in the high teens very consistently in the last few years, and were well into the 20s for late-season games, especially for those with playoff implications (or against the Argos). They also sell out at least a couple of games every year, or nearly sell them out.

Two seasons ago they failed in the stretch and missed the playoffs, and last year they missed the boat entirely. I was there for seven of their ten home games last year (incl exhibition) and believe me, drawing 15,000 for that team is a miracle. (Though the single win against Saskatchewan was brilliant, I've never been so happy at a live sporting event!)

Hamilton was averaging less than 8,000 in the 80s. The fan base has been building slowly through the 90s and it still has some legs (bolstered by the cup win in '99 too). If they play well this year you'll see the attendance rise as well. I don't think you can make the same prediction for the Argos, though.

Allez les Rouges (and Oskee Wee Wee),

M@
