Winnipeg Fury
Pope's late goal gives U.S. 1-0 win over Mexico April 28, 2004 DALLAS (Ticker) Eddie Pope's goal in the 93rd minute gave the United States men's soccer team a 1-0 victory over Mexico in a friendly Wednesday night. The teams went scoreless to stoppage time, when Omar Briseno upended Landon Donovan on the outer fringes of the penalty box. Bobby Convey sent a free kick to Taylor Twellman, whose shot was blocked but not held by goalkeeper Oswaldo Sanchez. Pope knocked in the rebound. In front of 45,048 fans at the Cotton Bowl - many of them rooting for Mexico - the Americans ran over a scared-looking Mexican side all game in the pre-World Cup qualifying exhibition. The U.S. held a 15-5 edge in shots and a 12-2 advantage in corner kicks. ADVERTISEMENT Goalkeeper Jonny Walker needed to make just four saves against Mexico, which is scoreless in its last four meetings with the U.S. That includes a 2-0 loss to the Americans in the 2002 World Cup. The U.S. improved to 11-28-10 all-time against Mexico and to 6-3-1 under coach Bruce Arena. Despite fielding nothing close to a full-strength side, Arena's team was all over the Tricolores from the start. Blitzing the Mexicans with well-orchestrated waves of attacks, the USA was dominant throughout. Donovan had ample room to roam right down the middle all game against Pavel Pardo, getting off two solid chances in the first half. The first, off Convey's corner kick, was half-volleyed off the goalpost. Seven minutes later, he blasted through the back line and force Sanchez to make a leaping save. Mexico's Jared Borgetti missed the best chance of the game in the 55th minute. He benefited from Walker coming out to intercept Israel Lopez's challenge but missed an open net. You know given the Yanks record over the past few years against Mexico, and full marks for all the results (that I've seen at least), matchs like this must just stick in Mexico's craw. Meaningless friendly or no. I almost enjoy the anticipation of yet another Mexico-USA encounter. You just know these matchs are stressing the Mexicans out to no end. It's not that I enjoy watching them squirm. Okay, it's exactly because I enjoy watching them squirm and perhaps find comfort in the knowledge of better them than us. Well, that and the fact you'd think Mexico dosen't have much of an excuse for loosing to the USA. On a regular basis. Except of course for the odvious one.... Ooooooh I just can't wait for this autumn's actions.

Winnipeg Fury
Terrorism alert for U.S. citizens at Euro 2004 May 13, 2004 LISBON, Portugal (AP) -- U.S. citizens planning to attend the European soccer championships should be extra cautious because of possible terrorist attacks, the State Department said Thursday. The alert covers three major events in Portugal -- the annual religious gathering in Fatima, which has just begun; the Rock in Rio concert at the end of May; and Euro 2004, which runs from June 12-July 4. Americans at Euro 2004 ``should be aware that soccer-related hooliganism has occurred at past European soccer championships, including violent conflicts between fans and rioting or vandalism in stadium areas and city streets,'' the statement said. ADVERTISEMENT ``U.S. citizens are advised to avoid areas of conflict between fans of opposing teams,'' the statement added. A million tickets for the tournament have been sold and up to 3 million visitors will pass through Portugal. Portugal has asked for NATO to provide surveillance planes throughout the tournament. Passport checks and border controls will be tightened. Portugal has sent 128 police to Iraq and was a strong supporter of the U.S.-led invasion. There have been no terror attacks in Portugal for 20 years, but officials increased security after the March train bombings in neighboring Spain.
