I wonder if he continued his Pat Quinn-like whining while taking the spot kick, or if he stopped for a few seconds! - The DUTCH illustrated once again that Ruud V Nistelroij should either be on the bench or not on the team at all during Euro 2004! I know its a friendly but still ... 4-0 over the hotest team in Europe says something!! - The kids shine for BRAZIL. Fabiano with a pair of goals and Kaka also netted one. Jarrek
Re: Slovakia vs Ukraine. Ukraine is playing dissapointing football lately, so that 1-1 draw is very dissapointing for Ukraine. Andriy Shevchenko did not play in that game. 3 players on Romania's squad play in the Ukrainian Premier League. One of them scored (Rat).

Yes it does look pretty much like a first team for Ger. they were missing Ballack but I didn't see Mutu's name either in the starting line up nor bench from the game reports. They were slow, tired-looking, disoriented, had no first touch and awful goaltending. Normally my hunch would be that they must have partied all Tuesday night. Except they were in Dallas where there's nothing to do, so that can't be the explanation! In summary, two hours of my life that I'll never get back. Dreadful match! Gotta love how Blanco was not able to pass U.S. customs though. I wonder how many illegal Mexicans poured across the border during the time it took custom officials to decide whether or not they should let in the guy who arguably has the best occupation in the entire western hemisphere!?!? DJT
Germany: Well, they did lose 5-1 to England, at home, in an official match, then went on to finish second at the World Cup (however lucky that was). Czech Republic: After that long undefeated streak (bookended by matches against Italy), they are now in a little slump of two losses in a row. But their next match is against Liechtenstein. Ireland: I don't think this was mentioned when they defeated Czech Republic last month, but with that win they became the current holders of the Unofficial World Championship (AKA "Perpetual World Championship", but the site that uses that name is not working right now), which Canada had an opportunity to grab (yeah, right) when we played Czech Republic last fall. Ireland held on to the title after drawing Poland yesterday. Italy: Trapattoni is still a fool.
Canuck Oranje
This Reuters news story shows a little of how fierce the competition for places in the starting 11 is for Brazil. Even when Ronaldo misses one game, the media in Brazil begins to muse about other alternatives. Especially after a string of poor showings. When your backup Striker has (now) 3 goals in 4 internationals, I suppose it is understandable. Luis Fabiano not upstaging Ronaldo RIO DE JANEIRO, April 29 (Reuters) - Brazil striker Luis Fabiano has no thoughts of trying to upstage Ronaldo after his two goals in the 4-1 friendly win over Hungary on Wednesday. 'Ronaldo is the first choice,' the Sao Paulo striker, who stood in for the rested Ronaldo, told Brazilian television from Budapest. 'I'm just going to keep working and try and score goals when I get the chance.' Luis Fabiano, whose fierce temper has often threatened to overshadow his talent, has scored three goals in four internationals. He was also on target on his debut against Nigeria last year. Brazil's performance was deemed worthy of the five-times world champions by the demanding public and media. The win ended a run of four successive draws, the latest two goalless. Brazil's last victory was in September's World Cup qualifier at home to Ecuador. Curiously, Brazil produced their best on a night when they were unable to field the so-called dream trio of Ronaldo, Ronaldinho and Kaka. The three players have played together in two games but the combination has yet to produce a goal. 'The result was achieved with an exhibition worthy of the football which has won five World Cups,' said the Jornal do Brasil. Coach Carlos Alberto Parreira, often criticised for being too methodical in his approach, praised every aspect of his side's performance. 'The team played with harmony,' he said. 'Everyone played well. The team played our style of football. 'The team had determination, good marking and, above all, played the Brazilian way with the ball on the ground, good passing, technique, movement, penetration, nice moves without forgetting about the marking.' Even Walter Casagrande, the television commentator and former Brazil World Cup striker who has often expressed exasperation at Parreira's decisions and lack of charisma, was upbeat. 'This performance has left me very optimistic,' he said. 'I hope Parreira has the courage to play like this against Argentina,' he said, referring to Brazil's World Cup qualifier in June against their arch-rivals. Luis Fabiano not upstaging Ronaldo I think the Brasil media need to keep in mind that there's a HUUUUUGE difference between playing in a friendly in Europe compared to playing in a WCQ in South America 3 days after having to play a competitive club-match in Europe! This is why many Brasilian players say winning the World Cup is much easier than winning the South American WCQ tournament (some even say winning the WC is easier than simply qualifying). Personally I don't think Fabiano had a great game against Hungary (which I'll also blame on the jet-lag). What did he do besides put a couple of shots into open nets from 5 yards out?? Kaka, Ronaldinho and Carlos created all the goals by running circles around Hungary.
