dualie
I'm gonna post this idea on bigsoccer.com after the USA:MEX match this week and I though I'd run it by you lot first: How about having a Three Nation Cup between the Canada, USA and Mexico? It would be similar to the British home internationals, each team plays each other once in league-type matches (90min, no OT) with standard points system (3-win, 1-loss). Each team gets one home match and one away match. It would be a simple format consisting of three matches playable over one week (Sun,Wed,Sat) and requiring each team to use only two international dates. Positive points from Canada's perspective: it would give Canada a reason to host a home match against relevant, regional opposition. It would give them as pretty good shot at some silverware. It gives the only Concacaf teams not part of a sub-confederation (UNCAF or CFU) their own tournament and championship. I think it would be a great addition. It would make the friendlies between us three feel less like one-offs and give them some extra punch. As a US supporter, I'd like to play you guys more...it would make a great road trip (Toronto, Vancouver, maybe even Montreal: very cool cities). Comments, thoughts, etc, please... marcl_19
i like the idea....BUT.... It couldnt be every year b/c of the gold cups and wc.......so the only realistic time for it to happen would be during the european championships every 4 years. still better than nothing, but when u consider that that is when wcq begins....it can be anothe problem, as cdn players are hard ebough to get for those games, let alone another week/2 weeks of service away from their club teams. bungey
I think it would be a great fit to coincide with the European championships, right before World Cup Qualifying begins, i.e. before the Belize matches. It's far enough ahead of any WCQ matches between the 3 countries that each can play their full strength squads without worrying about giving away strategy, and European teams aren't playing friendlies at that time. It would be great for Canada to get friendlies against those two. I could see Mexico prefering to play Costa Rica for the competition instead of Canada, though. redhat
Great idea, doubt if it would work. USA will not agree to it, and Mexico would prefer to play CR or Honduras. Maybe if the CSA puts pressure on the sponsors, but Canada is sponsored by Adidas while the US is controlled by NIKE ... If it was a pre-Gold Cup event that's played in LA --- maybe. Attendance will be good, but Canada will be screwed by the scheduling again (just like 2001 Confed).
