I'm sure , no-one cares but me, but......

Linfield wins league , CL spot , Q1

Portadown runner-up , UC spot Q1

Lisburn Distillery 3rd, Intertoto spot

IFA Cup , UC spot Q1 , May 1st , Coleraine v Glentoran.

Who , needs Euro GIANTS [:o)]

I, should mention, Glenavon is relegated and Cliftonville enter the relegation play-offs vs 2nd place Div1 team either Ballyclare or Armagh City as Div1 season is not finshed

We're talking about Irish football right?

Northern Ireland.

I think following these smaller leagues is interesting. My thread on undefeated European clubs got me following results from Cyprus! (Will APOEL hold on or did they blow their opportunity by losing (their first loss of the season) to Omonia last week? We'll find out next week!)

Speaking of undefeated European clubs, I didn't forget to check Northern Ireland when I compiled that list. But at the time I didn't notice that Linfield lost the first match of the season and then went undefeated, a streak which they ultimately carried until the end of the season (29 matches, 22-7-1). So their chances may have ended on the first day, but in the end, from one point of view, they came at least as close as APOEL, Celtic, Porto, etc.

One more thing about Northern Ireland. It seems they have a bit of a Scottish thing going: Linfield have now won 45 championships, Glentoran have 21, next club still in existence has only 6.

Well , yah , Northern Ireland ( IFL ). Republic ( Eircom League ) plays a summer schedule . '04 season started St. Patrick's Day , I believe.

Eircom Euro entrants from '03 season are :

Shelbourne CL , Q1

Bohemians , RUNNERS UP UC , Q1

Longford , FAI CUP winner , UC , Q1

Cork , 3rd Intertoto

DJT,

One other ting about Northern Ireland you didn't mention. I remember reading an article (possibly in the book "Fear and Loathing in World Football" not by Hunter S. Thompson - though as an aside I'd love to see him write about soccer) about a club called, if I remember correctly, Belfast Celtic who won a large number of titles until the IFA forced them to disband many years ago. They were Linfield's (the proto-Rangers racist protestant club) biggest rival and as a result much of the Catholic community in Belfast has completely ignored the IFL since choosing instead to follow the Eircom League (ince most of them are republican and want stronger ties to the South) or Glasgow Celtic (who were always traditionally popular anyways).

What Ireland really needs of course is to combine the IFL and Eircom leagues and thereby have one decent domestic competition. Unfortunately politics stands in the way.

Mike.

Hahaha, no, no, not knowledge. At least, not when it comes to Northern Ireland! Your first post just got me to check out the relevant pages at RSSSF. So, yeah, it's 'puter time.

Now that's knowledge. And a good memory, too. Yes, Celtic are third behind Linfield and Glentoran on the all-time championships list with 14, but I left them out because they were disbanded in 1949, which is why I said "the next club still in existence has only 6". Anyway, thanks for the background. I had never heard of this club before seeing it listed at RSSSF yesterday and now I actually do have a (tiny) bit of knowledge on Northern Irish soccer.
