Brazilian Championship Begins Today

The Favourites have to be Cruzeiro (last year's champions), Santos, and Sao Paulo. If key players stay put, I would say Santos and Sao Paulo would probably rank slightly ahead of Cruzeiro this year. However Luis Fabiano (Sao Paulo), Robinho (Santos) and Diego (Santos) would have to be most attractive potential captures for any large European club.

All three have long term contracts so the transfer fees would be high. Nevertheless, I suspect not all of these three players will see the end of the domestic season with their current club.

After having watched some Brazilian league games last year, I believe this has got to be one of the most exciting leagues in the world. It may not be the best league in the world; but, there is lots of offence and lots of flair.

Unfortunately, unless you get TV Globo Internacional we're not gonna see much of it. FSW looks like they have one game per matchday on tape-delay no less, if the first week is any indication! And FSW will butcher the coverage just like they do Futbol Argentino (long-live FS Espanol)!

On another note, Brazilian football needs a major overhaul. There’s talk they’re gonna do away with the State Championships since nobody cares about them much anymore! Hopefully, when they do this they’ll create two parts to the national championship (apertura and clausura) much like most of the rest of S. America. A 46-game championship is waaaaaay too long! [V]

Apparently 4 teams get relegated this year and two teams promoted so that will reduce the schedule somewhat.

In any case, it is still a fun league to watch.
