How about Aguiar at the back.....

Wouldn't Aguir actualy have to suit up for the squad then?

Worth a look though. No idea. I was of the understanding he was a hard tackler but that's about all I got on him.

I still figure JDV-Big Kev centering a back four is going to be awesome if we can get a def. midfielder playing effectively with them. And if Jazic plugs that weak left flank you've already stabilised the middle in a huge way.

The idea of loosing McKenna, as strong as he is in the air dosen't appeal to me. Not one bit.

I think Big Kev's speed isn't an issue. He isn't fast, but I think he's quick enough. Reaction time/acceleration, getting up to speed is the question mark as far as I'm concearned. Sure shows on the back line a lot more than up front.

Still. Can't hurt to look see. Another hard man with a good head and quick feet is never a bad thing. Especially against certain sides we're going to have to face on the road.

On that thought, road fixtures, Aguir may be just the thing the doctor ordered. You'd expect he'd be better able to take that CA/West Indies climate than say someone from northern Europe.

Aguiar actually was used in pre-season by Benfica at the back, as they were suffering centre back injuries and Camacho was looking for options. There seem to be times when he fades into the back line as well when defending a lead: he is strong in the air, for example.

A point against this is that he is a strong tackler but not overly precise, does make some hard fouls, is sometimes criticized for giving up free kicks in the critical zones. So his intimidation factor -physically incredible- is better used as defensive mid, where his pace can be better noticed as well (at the back you often have to just hold, you don't always have that dynamism in marking as you do in the middle). Also because he has been known to push forward and score when in a pinch, which is why I would say he is an option for special situations, but maybe Atiba is one that should be worked on more.

That's an interesting idea and in my opinion more feasable than moving Atiba back there (esp if he remains in the midfield for Helsingborg). With Stalteri and Imhof both very capable of playing that d-mid/holding mid role and lots of options at right back (Bent, Nsaliwa, Bircham, Stalteri) that might not be a bad option.

Unlike Cheeta I really am worried that DeVos and McKenna will be too slow together. With Menezes seemingly out of the picture, Reda untested and Cann riding the pine in MLS our options are limited. I still think Reda needs to get the first chance (we more or less know what we've got with McKenna) and if that isn't working out I think a somewhat radical move like Aguiar in the back isn't a bad idea.

He'd add a nice touch to the backline, he's experienced and reads the game well. A little hard in the tackle, but there's worse traits for a central defender as long as he's not too rash. I haven't seen him as much as Jeffrey, so perhaps that will be a concern. He reminds me of a Nick Dasovic circa 1994 with a little more polish to his game. Dasovic's move to the back has been positive in the few appearances I've seen with Vancouver, don't see why Aguiar couldn't make a similar move.

With DeVos hopefully missing the Wales game (to fight for promotion with Wigan) our central defence pairing will be a key position. Especially if Wales start a pairing like Earnshaw and Bellamy who can really motor.

Interesting idea anyway Gian-Luca, I don't expect we'll get to see it though.

cheers,

matthew
