Chinese soccer player killed by lightning

SINGAPORE (AP) — A player from China's SinChi Football Club died after being struck by lightning during a training session in Singapore.

Jiang Tao, 18, was struck by lightning Wednesday when a light rain started falling during practice at Jurong Stadium in western Singapore, SinChi manager and vice president Wang Jinhui said.

"He was very tall and the lightning hit the tallest player on the field," Wang said.

Police could not immediately confirm whether lightning killed Jiang, saying only he died of "unnatural causes." Police spokesman Chua Chee Wai said the incident was under investigation.

SinChi joined the S-League last year, becoming China's first professional team to compete fulltime off the mainland and the first fully foreign team in the Singapore league.

"Our thoughts and prayers are with the player's family, teammates and officials of SinChi TV FC at this difficult time," S-League said in a statement.
