BREMEN, Germany, Feb 25 (AFP) - Brazilian striker Ailton, who leads the scoring charts in the German Bundesliga, is considering an offer to switch nationalities and play for oil-rich Qatar to help them qualify for the 2006 World Cup.

The Brazilian has scored 19 goals for Werder Bremen this season but is frustrated at not having been called up to the Brazilian national squad.

Ailton, who in December even evoked the possibility of trying to play for 2006 World Cup hosts Germany, said he will make an announcement next week.

"I'll look at the offer and make a decision next week," the 30-year-old told popular German daily Bild.

According to Bild the Qatar football authorities are ready to pay Ailton one million euros (1.2 million dollars) for the World Cup qualifiers then an extra 400,000 euros a year if he decides to stay on.

What a money whore! First he trades an opportunity to play in Champions League for a few extra bucks and now this.

What is his link with Qatar though? Are any of his ancestors from there??

just a guess, but i don't think you need direct ancestors ... qatar can just speed up his citizenship procedure.

a lot of gulf states do that ... pay athletes a whole lot of $$ to represent them. i think another example of this is some high profile/very good kenyan long distance runner (Stephen Cherono) who is now representing qatar under the same cirumstances ... he changed his name and now runs for qatar after they offered him a good chunk of money etc.

Hmmm... I was afraid of a response like that. Now I'm not sure what the difference between club-soccer and national-team soccer is.

Both of you are right on. To add to what Elaine said, there are a lot of African countries that are doing the same thing; there was an article about this posted on the other forum during the African Nations Cup but I can't find it now. And to add to what amacpher said, FIFA must do something about this really soon because it's absolutely ridiculous; if allowed to continue then I think it would lessen my interest in national team soccer.

Is not so bad... still. We should wait if Qatar and similars can do something.

Bad news: you don't have to wait any longer. De los Santos was one of the leading scorers in the African Nations Cup (maybe THE leading scorer?) and played for the team that won it all.

What a weasel.

He's not good enough to make his own team well then try to go for a nation where you actually have family ties not some rich oil country thats bribing you. The guy should just wait for Ronaldo to retire or something. Ronaldo should at least get some dental surgery with all that money he makes...and Ronaldhino too.

Should be careful about casting stones.. Carl Valentine's name comes to mind. He did move to Canada when he came to play for us but I am not sure what his original connections were.

Ailton's chances of making Brazil's team are between slim and none. And I would lean to none. He is 30 (3 years older than Ronaldo). Then you have Ronaldinho (24), Adriano (22), Luis Fabiano (23), Robinho (20). And there are others that would be ahead of him and those we don't know of yet. I don't think anyone in Brazil is too upset with this move.

But I would expect those countries that have to play Qatar will be upset and I agree this loop hole needs to be closed. I doubt he has any intention of living there fulltime..

There should be a requirement of a moderate period of residency required by FIFA, as well as citizenship (which can, like in Qatar, be instant).

I expect some changes if a country like China or South Korea (or the US if they come fourth in the hex) get beat out for WC entry by losing to a stacked Qatar.

There is no "procedure" in Qatar or many other mid-east countries. It can be granted instantly by ministerial fiat. The new citizen need not even show up in the country.

I laugh.

Who cares? Brazil dosen't want him. Qatar dose. They're making this odvious by putting their money where their mouth is.

And as for residency requirment, can't see that happening. Too complicated and it would be biased against adult immigrants who might be pro. footballers but odviously can't earn a living in their new home. Or future home. Or whatever.

Dose seem totaly hollow though. All together mercenary and in no way flattering towards Ailton. Guess he wasn't brought up a proud Brazillian...

You know, if all these "rejected" Brazilians got together to play for some piss pot federation out in Oceania, they could get to the WC hands down in a walk.

See what the Aussies would think of that!

I am sure most of you came from some other country unless you are native indian-how do you know he wont become a citizen and have residency there for life--I think a mild 2 year citizenship is good enough with the added fifa rule you can paly for only one country ever in World Cup play-simple enough really

What the Hell was I thinking?

Lads, this is a great opportunity and we're going on about rights and wrongs and what not. Screw that! History books are witten by the winners and I think it's time we used the rules just like any good lawyer would, by their words not their spirit.

We've got to get a competative bid together and fast!! E-mail Bremen a counter-offer to forward to Ailton and hope for the best.

Feel free to jump in with whatever you can pledge lads, every little bit helps.

Dear Slut,

We the Voyageurs, as supporters of Canada's National Soccer Teams have put together an attractive offer to counter Qatar's rather crude and it should be said, demeaning monetary solicitation. That these sort of pressuading gestures should be advanced to you in the same way as say, a visiting oil Sheik might try to buy the pleasurable company of a blonde haired, Bremen red-light-district, street walker is not only insulting to those of us who've had the misfortune of witnessing it, but to your august person as well.

However, since it has been remarked that your ambitions of playing in the next WC cannot be achieved with Brazil and you'd be open to considering other teams we felt some small pledges, as tokens of our unblemished respect for you, should be made.

Mr. Ailton, Qatar might think you're a shameless hussy. And Brazil might think you're useless. But rest assured Mr. Ailton, Canadians believe every shameless hussy has a use.

Hoping to see you in red soon,

The Voyageurs.
