Tuesday, February 3, 2004 (TORONTO, ON) - The recent Toronto Lynx Super Y League trials attracted fine talent from southern Ontario for the 2004 season. Duncan Wilde, the Toronto Lynx head coach and the Director of the Toronto Lynx Premier Soccer Academy (TLPSA) is thrilled with the response of the soccer community, not only for the Super Y League but also for the other dynamic programs being offered at the Academy. “We are very encouraged by the quality of the young players in our Junior Lynx Programs right now which is the foundation for our future growth and success. We are off to a great start!” comments Wilde. The main goal at the Academy in 2004 is to build four quality junior teams to represent the Lynx in the SYL at U15, U16, U17 and U18/19 levels which kicks off in April. With one eye also on the future, the TLPSA will also field U13 and U14 boys teams for an exhibition tour in the UK during the March break. The Junior Academy teams are scheduled to take on teams that include youth teams from premier clubs in England: Manchester United, Everton, Southampton and Portsmouth. “The U13/U14 junior Lynx teams are a fine example of the quality talent in the 2003/04 Lynx Academy featuring players from many of the top clubs from southern Ontario. The U13’s will be led by strong captains: William Hyde from the Oakville Soccer Club while the U14’s will be led by Kyle Taitt of the Etobicoke Youth Soccer Club which is a part of the Toronto Soccer Association. Super Y League Coaching staff in place! The U13’s are being coached by Danny Stewart, a former Provincial and Canada games team coach. Stewart had success with the Wexford Soccer Club winning both the U17 Ontario Cup and National Championships in 1999 before taking the Head Coach position the following year with the Durham Flames in the CPSL. “Danny and I have worked together on 4 previous such tours” said Wilde. “Our biggest success was showcasing Iain Hume with Tranmere Rovers in 1999”. Wilde will be coaching the U14 Junior Lynx throughout the tour. Stuart has also been appointed as the head coach of the U18/19 Toronto Lynx Juniors. “Danny has a tremendous reputation for delivering top quality teams and is a fine asset to our program!” Tom Croft who holds a “B” license has been appointed as Head Coach for the U17 squad and will be assisted by Jim Webster. Croft’s record of 12 OYSL championships, 6 Ontario Cups and 2 National Championships, highlights the high standards of coaching for these Super Y League teams within the Lynx Academy. Sergio Velastegui, a former National team player and district head Coach with the Toronto Soccer Association, has been appointed for the U16 club while the U15’s will be coached by Brett Mosen who is a European ‘B’ and USA ‘A’ license instructor, was former Head coach of the ‘A’ League Atlanta Silverbacks and also previously held the position of State Director in Tennessee. Duncan Wilde is very pleased that Mosen has joined the TLPSA, stating,“Brett is a top quality coach who will be working year ‘round in the Academy. We further expect him to have a strong role with the First team, Toronto Lynx Soccer Club, as we rebuild the structure of the Toronto Lynx”. Wilde’s final appointment was in the position of Goalkeeper Coach, John Moriera who assumes this position not only for the First team but also for the SYL Clubs to ensure high quality play. The Junior Lynx Super Y teams will be competing in the Heartland Division of the Central Conference and will be taking on the Columbus Stars, Penns Forest, Toledo Celtic, Des Moines Menace, FT Wayne Fever, Grand Valley, Indiana Invaders, Kalamazoo Kingdom and Madison Capital. Supporters will be able to track the Toronto Lynx Juniors through the Super Y web site: www.superyleague.com as well as the TLPSA website at www.premiersocceracademy.com once the season kicks off. The teams are now preparing for the new season with training sessions at the Downsview Hangar on Sunday afternoons. Once the season kicks off all Toronto Lynx Junior home matches will take place at Centennial Park in Etobicoke, many prior to the pro team games in the main stadium. “It’s very important that all our teams improve on last season” said Wilde. “From what we are seeing so far, we are well on our way to achieving that goal. We have assembled an excellent coaching staff and that will be crucial to allow Billy Steele (Lynx assistant coach) and I, the time we need to spend on the first team. Our first steps have been extremely positive and I am very much looking forward to the new season”.
