So...

what are the Voyageurs wishing for in 2004?

On December 27th of 2002, I posted my 2003 wish list. I hope you'll indulge me if I review it here:

The List:

"...perhaps too optimistic, but the following results would make 2003 a deliously good year:

1. 12 games for Men's senior team

2. Top four finish for Senior Women in World Cup

3. U-23 Qualify for Olympics

4. U-20 Advance to Second Round of U-20 WC

5. U-17 Qualify and advance to second round

6. A League Champion from Canada

7. Wyn Belotte scoring 12 with Norrkopping in the Swedish Second Division(gotta start somewhere)

8. Julian DeGuzman establishes himself as a regular starter (on the cusp now) in Hanover

9. Brennan and McKenna move to stronger teams/Leagues

10. Tam Nsaliwa playing strongly in the Bundesliga 2

11. Jason DeVos preforming strongly in the English First

12. Iain Hume starting for Tranmere

13. Strong seasons from the rest of the under 30 European contingent.

14. Pesch being injury free and getting at least a taste of the Prem.

15. Eruopean gigs for Aristedemo (I know I screwed up the spelling), DeRosario and Menezes."

1. Not achieved, and overall a pretty disappointing year for the MNT. Ending the year with some optimism due new coach/direction and a surprising number of friendlies at the end of the year.

2. Achieved, although the style of play was disappoinitng. Nevertheless, 4th place is 4th place.

3. As was pointed out after I posted the list, it was not technically possible. However, the team is still in the running, so at least a partial here.

4. A Quarter final finish exceeds the dream!

5. Actually close here. The two teams that advanced on goal difference made the quarters. I am going to give partial credit here as they were a lot closer than elimnation in qualifyig would indicate.

6. Close, with Vancouver and Montreal being strong regular season teams, but no cigar.

7. Yikes, not even close. Did Wyn even score 12 in practice. Here's hoping he can turn it around.

8. Currently starting and making a name for himself. AS Ed likes to point out, rated int e top 15 for midfielders by Kicker magazine. A great year for Julian.

9. Mckenna stalled with Hearts, but they did at least play UEFA. Brennan injured, but his team is stronger and promotion chances are good. Call this wished teased, but not really achieved.

10. Seems to be occuring. He is at least playing regularly in the Bund2.

11. Injuries have limited DeVos's appearances, but he is certainy nt over his head in the First. Perhaps the Prem is in his future.

12. Hume is a regular starter and an emeging star.

13. Mixed bag here. Some have some have not. Probably a bit of a foolish wish.

14. Pesch is over his injuries, and he came close to moving up with Sheffield U. His role seems to be super-sub, and he may well be able to take that role up a league.

15. Nope. Didn't occur.

My wish list for 2004

1.Canada qualifies for the Hex, and in style, emerging as a solid bet for qualifying for 2006

2.Yallop heals any wounds from players & gets full participation from everyone.

3.Canada qualifies for the Olympics (Men & Women, but especiallty the men (the women should be a near certainty)).

4.Canada wins the U19 tournament this time.

5.At least one of Pesch, Brennan or De Vos moving up the EPL next year.

6.Outside of #6, two more players playing in one of the top 4 leagues in the World (Spain, Italy, England, Germany top tiers)

7.Bent, Bircham & Hume moving on up.

8.Regular quality playing time for Hirshfeld at a high level.

9.Committment from Jonathan De Guzman to play for Canada (not sure that it is necessarily going to happen in 2004, but it is a wish list) While were at it, Julian made a regular in the starting line-up of the Nats (incredible that this really hasn't happened yet).

10.Success at the gate for all Canadian A-league teams, incl. Edmonton & Calgary, no ownership hassles - Toronto getting into the playoffs again

11.Many more young Canucks finding jobs overseas & playing in the Canadian national team programs.

12.Many national team friendlies, incl. at least 1 at home

13.Improved coverage by the media, including most games televised in Canada.

14.Confirmation of & construction commencing for new soccer stadiums in Toronto & Vancouver (enough already!!!)

15.Much-needed vast improvement of the domestic pro soccer scene in Toronto (one way or another).

16.A few more Canadian players playing in the MLS regularly, rather than A-league.

17. Quality actor with the right amount of eccentricity chosen to play the title role in the new television revival of Doctor Who (okay, last one has nothing to do with Canadian soccer, but I thought I'd slip it in :) ).

Okay, I'll bite.

1). Canada qualifies for the hex. In a grand and scary fashion so far as everyone else is concearned.

2). A great, big, fat, sugar daddy with bottomless pits for pockets to sponsor a 10-12 team domestic pro-league from tomorrow untill eternity.

3). Brennan and JDV winning promotion to the EPL.

4). Making every home date Canada plays in 2004! All 8 of them!

5). Big Kev puts on 10 good pounds, Hearts win the Scottish Cup, go on to UEFA and the big man puts a wicked elbow right into Van Nistelrooy's left eyeball during the elimination round as he scores his third header against Howard. Causing both Sir Alex and the big Yank to break down into uncontrollable sobbing and be stretchered out of Tynecastle straight to the nut house and on into obscurity.

6). A whole deck of Get Out of an Injury Free cards for all our Nat's defenders, male and female.

7). A self cleaning litter box (Ooops. Wrong list).

8). Better footy coverage of what passes for the domestic game here in Canada.

9). The Charm of Mrs. Murphy's Law (What can go right, will go right, at the best possible time) onto all of our lads looking for a higher quality game overseas.

10). A National Stadium in Halifax or points waaay out east. So close to Europe you can see it. If that dosen't make it easy for the lads to make the home dates, Geezus, nothing will.

Oh, how I could go on. Gotta go though. Kettle is singing.

Men's team in the Hex.

Women's team getting a medal at the Olympics.

Norwich, Wigan and Sheffield promoted to Premiership.

Bent to become one of Plymouth's regulars and in the future one of the best there.

Remaining good form from Stalteri and De Guzman.

In friendly play, the MNT wins more than they lose.

Guest Jeffery S.

If we qualify for the HEX who cares if the whole squad is in 2nd or 1st or in Armenia or training with the Ottawa Wizards Veterans. That will justify pretty well everything.

Though I always like to see our players win titles, help teams get promoted, and play in Europe.

I would also like to see both men and women in the Olympics and get out of their respective rounds. Good comment about the women as a possible medal, that would be nice.

More personally, if the Whitecaps can win the A-League and Barça can win a title (UEFA, King's Cup) plus at least qualify for Champions, I'll be in heaven.

Wow, I start good threads when I'm incoherently intoxicated at 4 am. [^]

Here I go.

1) I go to see Canada v. Belize in Belize and as I'm tailgating in the parking lot, a group of Belizian supporters harrass me because Canada did not help Belize in its bid for independence from the UK in 1981.

As I'm trying to explain to them that their country is not Belize but in fact is called British Honduras, I hear screeching tires as a car speeds into the parking lot, with MikeD in a car driven by Rick Mercer (wearing the Canada jersey given to him by MikeD, of course).

The Belizians start getting a little nervous, but don't back down. All of a sudden we are all distracted by a portable kiosk McDonalds has set up in the parking lot. On its own it's not out of place, only the person manning the kiosk is a legend. The man is Roberto. And Torontosupport is buying a Sausage McMuffin. Roberto jumps over the counter and positions himself between the hooligans and me.

"Get out of here, sistas...wouldn't want to cauthe an internathional inthident!".

And so everything will be alright with the world.

For those who are confused, I refer you to this thread, which is my favorite thread of 2003:

http://www.canadian-soccer.com/forum/topic.asp?TOPIC_ID=575&whichpage=1

And that's my wish for 2004.

Great post Mimglow. Who could forget Roberto?

My wish is for lots of time, money and accessible locations for all willing Voyageurs to give us a big home field boost when we win four home qualifiers this year and qualify for the hex.

All I want from 04 is a hex berth. Everything else is gravy.

Happy New Year's y'all.

cheers,

matthew

Well done DJT, to remind us to look back and see how few goals were fulfilled during the year.

Here are a few wishes for 2005.

1) That Robert buys a diplomacy program for his computer.

2) That the old boys club at the CSA is replaced by people who are more current about soccer.

3) That the CSA develop a curriculum for player development.

4) That the CSA encourage standardized testing of youth players, after the CSA figures out what that entails.

5) That Canadian soccer actually improve more than it is improving in other countries.

6) That we start teaching Brazillian style soccer instead of English/Scottish style of long ball soccer.
