Question Arising From Rio Ferdinand's Suspension

What happens in English football in a case like this suspension?

I appreciate that the player is suspended from play? Does that mean he is not to be paid by his club side? If so, where does that money go?

For example in the NHL I understand that the team pays the suspended player's salary into a fund administered [i think for charitable causes]by the league.

No idea. Strongly suspect the club is insured against wage payments and/or fines impossed on the club by leagues or organisations. But, I'm guessing here.

FA may have a policy of non-wage payment in these sort of instances. As all contracts must be approved by the FA they're (if they exist) likely pretty hard to wiggle around. Don't forget that Rio Ferdinand is the one being punished here, not Manchester U. though they're certainly caught in the middle as it were.

Quite surprised this issue in general, and Ferdinand's case in particular hasn't been taken up more on the board.

The man certainly has support from many of his teammates and sounds a great guy. Could likely win a popularity contest it seams. But with drug testing what it now is, and rightfully so, you'd have though Mr. Ferdinand and the Manchester U. trainers and coaching staff would have seen to it that the required test was performed as required as scheduled in order to avoid the possible, and likely consiquences that have otherwise occured.

Someone in that billion dollar business which is Manchester United didn't take this whole issue seriously enough. Or they did, and were stalling and I'll let the conspiracy guys fill in the details from there.

Me, I find it hard to believe Manchester U. would allow Rio Ferdinand to miss such an important drug test and risk the harsh consiquences.
