Alberto7
From USLSoccer.com: Alignment for 10th W-League season announced W-League expands to 37 clubs for 2004 season with 12 new teams -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Wednesday, December 10, 2003 TAMPA, FL -- United Soccer Leagues announced today the official alignment for the 10th Anniversary season of the W-League in 2004. The league expands to 37 for the 2004 season with the addition of a dozen expansion franchises. The W-League will maintain its three-conference alignment from 2003, but has split the newly-named Northern (formerly Eastern) Conference into three divisions for the upcoming season, the New England Division, North Central Division and Northeast Division. The Central Conference will still be comprised of the Atlantic and Midwest Divisions and the Western Conference will remain as one group. Six of the 12 expansion clubs in 2004 will be in the Central Conference. Half of the Midwest Division will be new teams with the Cleveland Internationals, Detroit Jaguars, Fort Wayne Fever and West Michigan Edge taking to the field with the Cincinnati Ladyhawks, Columbus Lady Shooting Stars, Windy City Bluez and 2003 league finalist Chicago Cobras. Richmond, name to be announced, and the Bradenton Athletics, will join the Atlantic Division alongside the Asheville Splash, newly-named Carolina Dynamo (formerly Greensboro Twisters), Charlotte Lady Eagles, Northern Virginia Majestics and defending champion Hampton Roads Piranhas. Four new teams will play in the Northern Conference. The Rochester Ravens, Toronto Inferno and 2003 semifinalist Ottawa Fury will be joined in the North Central Division by the Sudbury Canadians, who played a handful of exhibition games last season, and a club in Montreal to be announced in January. The New Hampshire Lady Phantoms and two-time W-League champion Boston Renegades will compete with the Rhode Island Lady Stingrays and the new Western Mass Lady Pioneers in the New England Division. The Northeast Division will be comprised entirely of veteran clubs with the New Jersey Lady Stallions, New Jersey Wildcats, New York Magic, South Jersey Banshees and the W-League inaugural 1995 season champion Long Island Lady Riders. The Western Conference adds two new Canadian teams for 2004 with the Edmonton Aviators Women and a new club in Calgary. They join the Arizona Heatwave, Denver Lady Cougars, Fort Collins Force, Mile High Mustangs, Vancouver Whitecaps and 2003 semifinalist Seattle Sounders. Wow, new teams in Montreal and Calgary along with the Edmonton Aviators Women's team. Excellent news. Albert

beachesl
It would sure be great if some at the teams and leagues offices could coordinate some double-headers with both the A-League and W-League teams, especially now. Even if the teams from the same city aren't affiliated. If they shared planes and buses they could cut down travel expenses, news coverage would be increased and the gates would really increase. Imagine the two Aviators teams sharing an Eastern Road trip to Montreal, Toronto and Rochester, with the women Aviators playing either Sudbury or Ottawa while the men split off to Syracuse. And the Montreal teams going on a shared Edmonton/Calgary/Vancouver/Seattle swing. However, I guess there there will be a lot less inter-conference matches (IF any at all) with the much larger 37 team W-League. It would be a shame if no effort were made towards this, and I can only hopefully imagine that efforts are being made at the Whitecaps and Aviator's offices to explore this. Sudbury has a W-League team, eh! That's really great, and last year's results show they are really going to be competitive!

Chet
I realize that with a league like the W-League you have to have regional divisions to minimize travel costs. But with 37 teams now, you'd think they would at least consider breaking the league into first and second divisions, with promotion and relegation. Last year they had the Boston Renegades, with 13 wins, 0 losses, 1 tie, playing in the same division as Rochester, who were a pitiful 0-13-1. What kind of competition is that? I think we'd see a higher level of play in both divisions if they were to split things up. The minnows would have a chance of winning sometimes and the better teams wouldn't have to waste their talent playing teams they could beat sitting down. There'd still be 17-20 teams in each division, so they could still split the divisions up regionally to minimize travel.
jaydog2006
A few years ago they did have the w-1 and w-2.But it was not just on skill it was on the market and the teams were opereated etc.If they did break into 1 and 2 again just on skill 1 would not be a big league. You would have boston, ottawa, chicago, and who else. TorontoInferno
Toronto? but seriously, the league can't market a 'inferior' division such as a W-2, thats why they combined the leagues a couple years back, along with the creation of WUSA... Also, a 'pro' division wouldn't cut it, as the VAST majority of W-league players are in NCAA schools, and playing in a 'pro' league would ruin their eligbility, just ask my alma mater Varsity Blues....And paying 'pro' players would make the teams redo their whole business plans, something that most teams, and i'm talking about the majority of teams can't afford..They can barely afford to do it now, so without WUSA type money or even a quarter of WUSA type money, its not gonna happen I wouldn't be surprised to see a revived WUSA clone, but with a lot smaller budgets and a few less teams, and this does have a great benefit to the Big W...The pro players will need a place to play on their home continent...but i digress... What league doesn't have it powerhouses? or the perennial dogs..Rochester is a special case, they have always been; they are a founding member of the W-league so the league treats them with kid gloves (playing before the rhinos helps too). As for travel, As a member of the Inferno staff, who also travelled with the team, i can say that the travel is hard, but not terrible. The longest trips for us were to New England, approx 10 hrs, (a LOT shorter than in the west) and now that will be even shorter, with the creation of the new divisions in the east... I'm very excited about the prospect of facing Sudbury, the Fury, and the Equipe Quebecois or whatever they will be called... It was a great rivalry when we faced the Dynamique and the Fury two years ago, I'm confident it will be even greater this year! mtlfan
quote:Originally posted by TorontoInferno Also to Elaine, good luck with the Canucks Hope to see you again at some Inferno games I can't believe Toronto didn't engage Elaine to manage their website. Sudbury were quick to scoop her up. Considering she's in the neighbourhood and the Inferno website is pathetic this is quite confusing. Check out Toronto's website and decide for yourself.http://www.torontoinferno.com/
TorontoInferno
Thanks for the complement I'm also the webmaster...i didn't design it, but i'm the guy who looked after it last season...Just for your knowledge the website will be redesigned totally for next season... Once again, thanks for the complement Oh and a thought on pathetic, maybe some of the people on this board should get up and volunteer to some of the teams they support. I'm sure the CPSL or the W-league teams could use an extra hand at games or on publicity. We are all volunteers at this game, and we ALL have other lives. I for one was in Italy during the fall, and had to rely on others to get the website done...Its my fault its in the state its in...But DON'T knock volunteers...I haven't been paid one red cent for the work i do, either at the games or behind the scenes, nor do i wish to be paid, its the fact that i'm helping something i believe in, not just sniping from beyond. I for one hope Elaine does a great job at Sudbury, at least she is doing something
mtlfan
The fact that someone volunteers for a job does not exclude them from being criticised. As you have no idea of the number of hours I volunteer to the sport you are just assuming that I don't. My point is I am not looking for recongnition for myself but I do want it for the teams and players. A team's website projects an image about the team and players and is the most effective way of getting the right message out to the public. strobe_z
I wonder if anyone is gonna believe that wasn't the intention at all... and that I'm just noticing the resemblance now. [:0]
TorontoInferno
I for one do. Maybe the owner or whomever approved the logo hasn't visited this website or maybe they have. I for one would be flattered that a team would use even part of a logo as inspiration for their own. It means that you have a great design, and someone sees the merits of it in their own situation... That it is copyrighted or unoriginal is a whole other story..
DJT
I don't think that it is at all right for their logo to be a copy of ours. I'm not flattered nearly as much as I am angered when someone just takes something I've (or in this case Jarrek with ideas from other Voyageurs) worked hard to create. This really only makes the Sudbury Canadians look bad, in my opinion.
TorontoInferno
i didn't think of that... The old ask-before-you-take would have been appropriate here...i've tried my hand at graphic design (badly) and can admit that it is one of the most time-consuming and frustrating projects i've ever tried....my complements to you, Jerrek and the other voyageurs on the design
Daniel
For those who don't really read the messages, strobe_z designed it and he says the ressemblance is accidental.
