bettermirror
sounds like a formidable side. i think this lineup speaks volumes to the ability of the a-league to develop youngsters for our nation! quick count shows 9 players who have/are played/playing in the a-league. well done. Gordon
In 9 months goes from not good enough to U-17 to making U-20 ahead of the U-17s. Methinks a slection error may have occured early in the year.
shaku_bert
With the first game 8 days away, when will the squad be getting together? I agree that the squad looks promising, but, boy, we have good teams in our group. Are the soccerroos any good?

sstackho
Crap, I was getting my ages mixed up. I just thought of that... Thanks
An Observer
So it seems that Hughes and Haineault were the too let go. I am also quite surprised about Edgar making it as he didn't make our last U-17s as pointed out by Gordon. And even more, not only is he eligible for the next U-20 side but the one after that as well. here's hoping that we have a star defender in the making as boy could we use it on the senior side
bettermirror
if edgar can make the squad so young, why can't uccello who scores seemingly for fun at ac milan juniors????
loyola
Edgar is a defender, Uccello is a forward or an attacking mid.
Gian-Luca
A bit surprised that Hughes didn't make the final cut, though he is still young enough for the next U20 team I believe.
Guest Ed
Lots of options up front though with this level G-L. Look at the size of the Newcastle kid though. He's only 16.
hamiltonfan
i think that dave simpson is a great player, better then some on the team. shouldnt he have made it?
bettermirror
edgar being a defender and uccello being a forward is interesting. thing is, as a defender being selected while being a younger player is much more difficult. how often does manchester united put an 18 year old defender in, and how often do they put an 18 year old attacker in? big difference. Canuck Oranje
Well I am guessing Edgar has shown something... It is true very few defenders get introduced at such a young age.. But this is U-20.. And a 6'2" central defender playing at the youth level at Newcastle United can't be overlooked even if he is 16.. Then, maybe he is just plain good... bettermirror
whoa, 6 foot 2! sounds like de vos could have a partner in 2-3 years! in time for world cup 06!!!! haha.
Canuck Oranje
Just checked the NUFC website, Edgar has appeared in and started 6 games with the Newcastle U-19 team up until the beginning of October when I guess he went to Panama with Canada. Gian-Luca
quote:Originally posted by Ed Lots of options up front though with this level G-L. Very true, but my surprise stems from the fact that we went with 5 strikers on this squad out of an 18-man roster for qualifying, now we are going with 4 strikers on a 20-man squad. I guess it suggests that the 3-4-3 we played at times in qualifying isn't going to happen here & that overall Mitchell is going to have the team play more defensively. Though with the level of competition in the tourney itself being an obvious step up from qualifying, I can't say that this is not the right way to go. RS
It was mentioned in the CSA press release that Hughes was invited to the camp in Turkey but declined, thus giving up his spot on the team.
An Observer
that's worrying that Hughes declined. I hope he is not reconsidering playing for Canada...not that I know who else he could play for.

I hope he is not reconsidering playing for Canada...not that I know who else he could play for. I understand and share your fear, but I have a suspicion that Hughes was told that he would make the team but probably not see much action over the likes of Godrey, Belotte and Hume. Lemire, I suspect, won't get a tonne of time either. I think they gave him the option to stick with the team on this understanding, or return to his club side. He will be eligible for the next U20 tournie, and I expect we'll see him on the pitch for qualifications.
An Observer
hope you are right Beaver as I have thought that too. He thought his development would be better served playing for Kaiserslautern and possibly moving up to the Reserves than sitting on the bench for three weeks.
