Gordon
quote:Originally posted by Rudi I could have sworn he said that Atiba is playing "Centre Half", but you may be right, since there would be no real point in drawing attention to the fact that Atiba plays centre half, since that's his regular position. (How's that for a run-on sentence?) My hearing is poor - about 75% of normal. It is quite possible that I got it wrong. For the reason you outline (Atiba's regular position)and the indication of a switch to 4-4-2, it just seemed natural to assume that what I heard was correct. Any others want to weigh in on the matter?
Guest Ed
I'm pretty sure that 'centre half' in the English game is not central midfield. It refers to a central fullback (stopper from our point of view?). I've read reports and heard it before where they talk about centre halfs and centre midfielders and they are two difft positions. Now that you say that Ed, I do seem to recall Alex Ferguson referring to Rio Ferdinand as a centre half when they signed him.
matthew
A guy I know told me he thought Atiba was playing in the centre of defence against the Czechs, but only saw about 20 minutes of the match. He said he was still getting forward some. I asked if Harmse had moved up and he said he wasn't sure. He said Arango was in the back as well and showed a really nice touch. I wasn't sure if it was a one off move or if even Atiba had just been drifting back man-marking someone or what. I guess maybe he moved to the middle, which changes my plan for dealing with Iniesta (or whatever his name is). cheers, matthew

Yup, centre half is a centre back. The name goes back to those days long ago when teams used to play the ummm, less than conservative 2-3-5 formation in England and somehow that centre back role was tied in with "centre half" position, and the term sorta stuck. At least thats my understanding of it. So, in other words, the Brits use a crazy obsolete term that is ultimately confusing for anyone outside their culture. Par for the course, eh? Guest Ed
My first foray into organized soccer was quite some time ago, with the 2-3-5 formation. I can't remember if I was an outside right or inside right. I do remember it was like kicking a piece of cement when the ball got wet. I can totally relate to those brain injuries the English press were talking about.
Dandal
Atiba Hutchinson will go on trial with the Serie A club Udinese after the holidays. Öster's general manager Leif Widén today confirmed this. He added that EPL side Southampton also wanted Atiba for a try-out, but ran into the usual work permit trouble. Widén says they are happy for the italian interest, because it means more money but mostly because it shows that the club is able to make a major contribution to the development of young players. Guest Can. in UK
Saints tipped to miss out on Atiba Monday, 15 December 2003 FROM SKYPORTS: By Kent Hedlundh Southampton look set to lose out to Udinese in the race to sign Canadian Under-21 international Atiba Hutchinson. Saints have expressed interest in the talented midfielder and were keen to take a closer look at him, but reports are suggesting they will be scuppered by work permit problems. If this proves to be the case, it could well allow Udinese a clear path to tie up his signature. Hutchinson will arrive in Italy at the start of next month, with Udinese expected to make a decision later in January. "Atiba will go there after the holidays, therefore his decision will probably not come until the middle of January," Osters sporting director Leif Widen told FotbollDirect.com. He added: "Southampton wanted Atiba to come for a trial, but the tricky regulations for work permits might make them withdraw." The 20-year-old joined Swedish side Osters IF in December 2002 and he has made a huge impression since arriving in Sweden. Hutchinson, who is contracted to the club until next year, was linked with Manchester City earlier in the year but The Citizens have failed to firm up their interest and it now looks as if Serie A could be his next destination. Gian-Luca
If that happens, that would be awesome. We've never had a player playing regularly (or even irregularly) in first team action in Serie A, and Italian teams (especially those in Serie A) interested in Canadian kids without an Italian background is fairly rare, perhaps unheard of. bettermirror
i think this is fantastic! i'd much rather see him go to italy than have yet another canuch in england. i am one of those proponents of having your international players playing in as many countries as possible to add more dimensions to your game. atiba in italy would be MASSIVE. he'd figure out how to break down tough defences a lot better too! Gian-Luca
Also, the Italian league is pretty popular in Canada & it would be nice to have a Canadian player in their which could garner some more attention for within the Italian-Canadian community. We might even see Atiba discussed on that TLN Soccer Fanatics show.
David C.
Now, if we could just find out who the other players/teams are that Dale was avoiding to reveal...
Andrew W
Any step up is encouraging and worth applauding, whether it be to England, Italy, Spain, Germany or France. I'm just happy the young man is getting his due and with a side we may catch a glimpse of on TLN. I'm also wondering if his positive impact in Sweden (not to mention his growing valuation) may expand the interest amongst that league's sides to bring in Canadians. While his team was relegated, I wonder if they may be interested in some guys with promise like DiTullio and Arrango who need further grooming. matthew
This is huge news! I think we were all thinking that Atiba and Hume could be getting Premiership-level interest, but if Atiba is getting a look from Serie A, what might Hume be in for and if that's the case, I think it could be logical to think that DiTullio, Matondo, Karim, Simpson, Arango, etc could be getting trial offers from first division Euro teams. That's a bit of a logical leap I know, but I hope this is a positive sign for the rest of the team.
bungey
This is amazing, I really wasn't expecting such a big result so quickly after the tournament. I fantasized about Atiba or Iain going to Serie A, but I didn't actually believe it. Come on Atiba, go and make Udinese! Good luck, or break a leg, or whatever you say to a soccer player (probably not "break a leg").
hamiltonfan
that would be great for Atiba if he goes to Serie A or the EPL. I would rather see him go to Serie A. where would you like to see him go??
Cheeta
Uh. Wow. Sorry. Rather see Mr. Hutchison in the EPL. More the merrier so far as I'm concearned. And I'm certain the footballing life at Southhampden would be wonderful for him. Even as a bench role. Have to admit that I've been watching more Serie A this year than I have in many a year (and not disappointed). From what I can tell, Udinese is a damned fine team. A great honor for the big lad. At least he won't get lost too far down on the roster. Looks like this apprentice will be going to the next level:) Nice payday for Atiba. Nice payday for Osters. Outstanding news. Gian-Luca
Only problem is, despite Atiba's preference, that bloody work permit issue. How long does Atiba have to work in the UK before he becomes eligible for one, or is that even a possibility?

mattbin
I think Atiba in Serie A will do much more for Canadian soccer than EPL. It's a market we've never broken into (have there even been any starting Canadians in lower level Italian leagues?) and I agree that a variety of styles will greatly benefit the national team. It's a huge honour and well deserved. I hope Atiba takes it just so I can see him every now and then. It's incredible to watch Stalteri and DeGuzman the odd Saturday, another regular starter in a major league would be awesome. Or am I hoping for too much? Will he really be a starter on Udinese? Joe Keeper
This is a bit off topic. However I am wondering if Kenny Stamatopolous is up for a transfer to a higher level of football, than the swedish second tier? I think our No. 3 should be playing higher than that.
