amacpher
Yuppers, I’ve been visiting that site semi-daily for years now. I’ll take those simple text-only sites over those big, heavy, eat-lunch-while-you-wait-for-a-page-to-download sites (ESPN Soccernet) any day. The following site has loads of archives: http://www.rsssf.com quote:Originally posted by Canuck Oranje If you want to check out some league archives, try this site.. http://sunsite.tut.fi/rec/riku/soccer.html
sstackho
Cool! I use http://www.soccerbase.com for British and Euro soccer and player info, but it's not perfect.
DJT
I use RSSSF multiple times every day. It's amazing. But I also use Riku's site a lot (it's a bit easier to access current results there because there is less stuff to wade through, plus he updates it quicker). He needs some help with his Canadian section, though. I've been meaning to contact him about that. The analogous site for national team games is Raoul DaSilva's site at http://www.rdasilva.demon.co.uk/football.html. These three sites, along with Livescore, should be staples for all soccer lovers! Canuck Oranje
I am also interested in getting some benchmark stats for individual players if it is available somewhere. It is always fascinating to see how athletic some players are. For example the NFL, uses 40 yard dash times to evaluate quickness. Basketball uses the vertical leap. On the note of fascinating athletismm it reminds me of a story of one the New Zealand Maori rugby players, who at 6'6" and 260(?)was clocked in the 100 metres at 10.8 sec. On a soccer note, I know of English League game studies where it was determined that the average First Division (now EPL) midfielder covered just over 10km during a game. Fascinating if you think that those players need to be just as quick in the last minute as they were in the first minute. As a coach at the time, that confirmed in my mind the importance of top fitness.
Canuck Oranje
For Rosters I haven't found a perfect one but these are good: http://www.eufo.de (German based) http://www.footballsquads.com (UK based) http://www.transfermarkt.de The transfermarkt website appears to be under development still but the attempt to place a market value on players is interesting. Not sure how scientific it is so I see it only as an opinion of value. Also, using De Guzman as an example, his market value was assigned at the beginning of last year so I suspect that some values are dated.
amacpher
Another cool site: http://www.worldfootballrankings.com/ At the bottom along the left-hand side they have stats on attendance for every orgranized football team on the planet it seems (even amateur). I find it not only interesting but also useful. You can compare these average attendance figures with stadium info ( at worldstadiums.com ) to gage how difficult it would be to get tickets for any game... Canuck Oranje
Interesting... However, there are some inconsistencies. Paysandu is listed as the top Brazilian club. As a result, I am wondering what games they are using to calculate averages. Various Polls compiled by RSSSF Brazil including one by by Sao Paulo University has Flamengo, Corinthians, Vasco Da Gama, Sao Paulo FC, and Palmieras as the five most popular clubs in Brazil. These clubs are also verified by the RSSSF Brazil (earlier in this thread for web address) in the historical table of Polls since 1983. The RSSSF has Paysandu is ranked 23rd most popular in their poll. While I don't doubt the attendance numbers, it would be interesting to see what games are counted in the convoluted Brazilian system. For example, I hope to attend the Sao Paulo-Coritiba game in Sao Paulo at Morumbi Stadium in the Brazilian Championship. Morumbi has a seated capacity of 80,000 (total 100,000). Since Sao Paulo is currently 4th and Coritiba 3rd, I expect to see an enormous crowd (probably 40,000-50,000). At the same time, Palmieras is in Serie B this year and I would expect smaller crowds for them as a result. Curious.. quote:Originally posted by amacpher Another cool site: http://www.worldfootballrankings.com/ At the bottom along the left-hand side they have stats on attendance for every orgranized football team on the planet it seems (even amateur). DJT
quote:Originally posted by Canuck Oranje I am wondering what games they are using to calculate averages. Read the box on the left side of the page where the rankings are listed. Only domestic games from July to December 2002 were included in the ranking. In July 2002 the last Copa dos Campeões was held. This was the tournament where Paysandu pulled off a big surprise and won, qualifying for the Copa Libertadores (for the first time, I think), and they played all of their home games in their home city of Belém whereas the big teams played at neutral sites. Perhaps this skews the numbers. You probably want a ranking over a longer period of time.
