Canadians Up For WUSA Awards

Canadians Karina LeBlanc, Christine Latham and Sharolta Nonen were announced as nominees for WUSA awards on Wednesday.

Nonen, a native of Vancouver who plays for Atlanta, is a finalist for defender of the year with San Diego's Joy Fawcett and Washington's Jennifer Grubb.

LeBlanc, a native of Maple Ridge, B.C., is up for the best goalkeeper award. The Boston 'keeper made a WUSA-high 91 saves this season but will be in tough against Briana Scurry, who led the league in save percentage (79.5), goals-against average (0.95) and shutouts (seven) for Atlanta. Siri Mullinix of Washington is also up for the award.

Latham, from Calgary, was nominated for the top rookie. The San Diego forward had six goals and three assists. She is up against teammate Aly Wagner and Atlanta's Maribel Dominguez.

Mia Hamm is nominated for most valuable player. The forward for the Washington Freedom tied for the WUSA scoring lead this season with 33 points.

She's up against teammate Abby Wambach, who also had 33 points, and Boston forward-midfielder Maren Meinert, the all-star game MVP and the league's career scoring leader with 81 points.

Coach of the Year nominees are Tom Stone of Atlanta, Pia Sundhage of Boston and Tom Sermanni of New York.
