The schedule has finally been clarified (posted on Rochester's site, but they made mistakes --- overall the four teams should have done a better job to explain this competition). Hey look! Someone invented a new cup while I wasn't looking! Hahahaha. Just kidding, but I had seriously never heard of this before.

Maybe that's because the clubs came up with this one and aren't advertizing it at all!

Allez l'Impact!

Allez les Rouges!

Allons Ultras!

Since it doesn't seem as though the clubs are going to provide info, let's use this thread to update results and standings.

June 8 results

Toronto 1 Montreal 0

Rochester 2 Syracuse 0 (not A-League)

Apparently Rochester and Syracuse used B teams in their non-A-League game. There's another one coming up on Wednesday between Rochester and Toronto so we'll probably see more of the same. This isn't right. The clubs created the tournament themselves but don't want to take it seriously? What was the point?

Standings up to and including June 8

Hmm, I don't know what the tiebreakers are (I hope the clubs addressed this issue!), but I'll go with goal difference followed by goals scored for now.

1. Rochester 1 1-0-0 2-0 3
2. Montreal 2 1-0-1 1-1 3
Toronto 2 1-0-1 1-1 3
4. Syracuse 1 0-0-1 0-2 0[/code]

Rochester 1 Toronto 1 (not A-league)

Kirk Wilson 60'; Sebastian Barclay 76'

Excerpt from a report on Rochester's site:

"The Rochester Raging Rhinos and Toronto Lynx played to a 1-1 tie tonight at Frontier Field in a Can-Am Cup contest.

The Rhinos took the lead in the 60th minute on a blast from Kirk Wilson. Wilson settled a header by Viktor Paco just inside the box and ripped a shot over the left hand of Toronto goalkeeper James Kryger for a 1-0 advantage.

Toronto tied the game at one on a goal by Sebastian Barclay in the 76th minute. Barclay knocked down the ball in front of Andracki and hammered it into the left corner. Ryan Lucas picked up the assist.

The Lynx thought they had taken a 2-1 lead in the 86th minute on a goal by Ngon, but the goal was waived off because he was offside.

The Lynx nearly took a 1-0 lead at the 26th minute on a great effort by Ali Ngon. But Rhinos' goalkeeper Billy Andracki was equally spectacular, diving to his right to knock the ball away."

Standings up to and including June 11

2. Toronto 3 1-1-1 2-2 4
3. Montreal 2 1-0-1 1-1 3

Can-Am Cup Final</u>

Montreal 4 Rochester 2

From the Montreal Impact site:

MONTREAL, July 30, 2003 — David Fronimadis, Darko Kolic and Mauro Biello scored in a span of seven minutes in the second half to give the Montreal Impact the Can-Am Cup championship title, Wednesday, following a 4-2 victory against the Rochester Raging Rhinos. The offensive outburst, started at the 52nd minute and completed at the 59th, erased Montreal’s 1-0 deficit and turned it into a 3-1 lead in front of 6,241 spectators at Claude Robillard Stadium.

Kolic (photo) and Biello also picked up an assist each, while Patrick Leduc scored the insurance goal on a penalty kick at the 86th minute after Kolic was brought down by Nate Kaczanowski in the penalty area. Viktor Paco scored both of Rochester’s goals, beating Impact goalkeeper Michael Ueltschey at the 3rd and 70th minute.

"I’ve been waiting for this chance to go on the field and try to do something for the team," said Kolic, who had played only two games and a total of 14 minutes so far in regular season action. "It was a great feeling to contribute like this after spending such a long time on the bench."

"We were without several players due to injury or national team duties, but the others stepped up and did their jobs," said Impact coach Bob Lilley. "We had the ball a lot in the first half, but we weren’t going for their throats. We were more assertive in the second half."

The Montreal squad therefore was able to keep its Can-Am Cup title, after winning the first edition of that competition in 1998, 3-1 against these same Rhinos. That year, the Can-Am Cup was played over a single game, before coming back in a more elaborate format this season.

"We started slow, but fortunately we woke up in the second half," said Biello. "Darko made things happen. It’s a good thing because we wanted to beat the Rhinos. We want to beat them every time out."

Kolic gave Montreal a 2-1 lead at the 55th minute of play, less than a minute after coming into the game for Martin Nash. He had the ball at his feet with his back to the net, then turned around and instantly shot the ball in the upper corner to the right of Rochester goalkeeper Soren Johnson.

Fronimadis had tied it up at 1-1 at the 52nd when he took hold of a loose ball and placed a low shot to the left of Johnson. Biello then added to the score at the 59th, speeding in to push home a ball that was slowly rolling towards the goal line. Leduc scored the last goal of the night on the PK, placing the ball to the left of Johnson while the Rhinos ‘keeper decided to dive to the right.

The Can-Am Cup final did not count in A-League standings, but the race for the Northeast Division title will resume this weekend, as the Impact will travel to Pittsburgh to face the Riverhounds on Sunday (6 pm, CJAD).
