American star Shannon MacMillan may miss the Women's World Cup tournament after injuring her right knee in a club match on Sunday.

MacMillan, the all-time scoring leader for the San Diego Spirit of the WUSA league, tore her anterior cruciate ligament in a match against the Boston Breakers.

"Unfortunately, she did suffer a significant injury to her knee and she will need reconstructive surgery," team physician Dr. David Chao said.

"But considering the kind of athlete she is, knowing the kind of shape she is in and how hard she works, we anticipate as quick a recovery as possible."

MacMillan has 18 goals and 17 assists with the Spirit.

An ACL injury normally requires a minimum six-month rehabilitation period, meaning it would be difficult for MacMillan to make it back in time for the Women's World Cup, which is slated to take place from mid-September until early October. The tournament was to be played in China but organizers are looking for an alternative site.

"I'm going to try to get it done as soon as possible and then work as hard as I can in rehab," MacMillan said.

"We'll just have to see how the (ACL) graft takes and then take it day-by-day and week-by-week."

In 153 games for the US national team, MacMillan has 58 goals.
