  • Sober Second Thoughts: The sins of the Mo

It's likely a reflection of diminished expectations that so many people left yesterday's 0-0 draw with New York satisfied.

The draw is the new win in Toronto.

And, in isolation, there was nothing to particularly get worked up about. The Reds were likely the slightly better side on the day and they did keep a clean sheet for just the second time all year.

The problem comes when you step away from micro analysis and instead take a longer, macro view.

One point in three games last week. No goals in 336 minutes. A 0-8-7 record at BMO Field in MLS play over the last year and two days.

And, that's on top of seven years of being TFC.

It's difficult not to wallow in it. It's especially difficult when there is very little evidence that there is reason to hope.

With just 10 days left in the transfer window fans are starting to worry. Once again it looks like TFC is going to rush in its plan D signings at the very end of a window. Of all of the club's quirks that might be one of the most frustrating.

Likely due to the inconsistency of management, signings have always been much later than the vast majority of MLS teams. Whereas most clubs target 1-2 guys, get them or not, then quickly move on, TFC always ends up scrambling to fill the roster spots.

The Reds don't lead the league in much, but they do have the most out-of-window signings this year with seven. Since a player has to be out of contract, and have been passed over during the window as a free, that's not a good thing,

Who knows, maybe Kevin Payne and company will pull a rabbit out of the hat next week. It's possible, it just isn't what typically happens around here.

One thing that is increasingly becoming more and more clear is that the rabbit probably won't be a Uruguay international. Diego Forlan is almost certainly staying in Brazil for now.

During the game, I spoke to a journalist who covers the game in Brazil.

He indicated that people close to Forlan had told him that the player was planing to come to MLS next summer. He didn't want to risk losing his spot on the national team until the end of the World Cup and MLS' reputation in Uruguay is such that he likely would if he made the move now.

However, the journalist also had a message that TFC fans might not want to hear.

"I said MLS, not Toronto." He said that TFC was viewed as toxic, even far away from these shores.

And therein lies the most frustrating thing of all. Even if TFC is doing things right now, even if there is the perfect plan in place to fix things, the Reds past transgressions may bite the club in the ass.
