Nine Stripes Podcast: Talking with PFCOntario

Die-hard York9 FC fan Eric Pronio brings his outspoken (and probably biased) opinions to the internet. Focusing on York9 FC, but also touching on all things CPL, Canadian soccer news, worldwide soccer news, and pop culture.

On today’s podcast, Maxwell Mowbray (aka @PFCOntario) joins the pod to talk about his love for Pacific FC and the CPL. Eric also gets into the 40-man Gold Cup Roster for Canada, and has a quick preview of the second leg between York9 FC and AS Blainville.

    • With Lensky bringing them up room service.
    • Shhhh, dont spread this around.  I dont want CPL to copy it, Ie Roberts, Welshman etc etc count as CDN for roster purposes but not for CMNT.  I especially dont want them to copy the MLS/green card makes you domestic kind of thing here.  Come to think of it, I dont want the CPL to copy almost anything MLS has done, other than expand and stay afloat.
    • Robinson would routinely play 4 or 5 kids at a time (and Bustos out of position) with secondary/bench players, then complain that they "didn't show enough".  Compare that to Davies and now Bair - kids given the chance to play with basically the regular rotation, and actually developing from it. Adegkube to me is actually the most interesting case out of all of them.  He actually outplayed Harvey to start a season, looked pretty good in 5 or 6 starts, then got injured.  When he returned from injury, he never played again.  Rumours swirled it was because of "attitude/entitlement" issues, but it's honestly hard to figure out which came first: did he not play because of "attitude" or did he develop an "attitude" because he'd shown he could play but wasn't given the chance again?
    • Wow, if OneSoccer gets it, they'll have cornered the Spanish speaking football market in terms of the 2 major leagues, South American cup competitions and WC qualifying. Their football offering will be on par or very close with DAZN. Good news for CPL also. Will get base that typically doesn't follow MLS and Canadian national teams. Unless DAZN is overpaying for BeIN, everything else points to being on OneSoccer as the best synergyistic option.
    • I just noticed that today.. big Libertadores and Sudamericana tilts this week. Super pissed.  Here's hoping Onesoccer swoops in
    • Do you see Mediapro gets their hands on it via Onesoccer?
    • DAZN doesn't have BeIN sports anymore. Either a dispute with them or something else? No advance notice, just disappeared today. Confirmed loss by DAZN on twitter but no reason given. Apparently, it happened last year also. So, gone are 2 of the top 5 leagues, Libertadores & WC qualifying from 2 regions. Growing pains for sports streaming services as I don't know of a single one that is performing on par with a tv sports network (even the streaming services of the tv sports networks have all kinds of issues).
    • Big difference is percentage of eligible players for national team..portland has the 8 international slots filled in the 27 man roster but also asprilla blanco cascante chara dielna mabiala valeri tuiloma flores jadama dont count as internationals so 18 of 27 are not eligible (or seems so) for usa
