  • French Canada wants in (the CanP)

On today's SoccerToday Kevin and Duane talked at length about the positive impact of CanPL so far.

They also talked about one major failing -- the lack of French content on the official webpage and app. This needs to be addressed.

Canadian soccer is experiencing an unrivaled growth in this country with the beginning of the Canadian Premier League and the presence of Canada at the France 2019 World Cup. Unfortunately, I have to point out the lack of french content on the league's website and also on the OneSoccer platform.

It is imperative, in this time of development of the new standard bearer of the beautiful game in Canada, that we do not forget the second biggest province in population and also the hundreds of thousands of french speaking fans from coast-to-coast.

    Sincèrement,

I look at my old Nordiques sweaters everyday and cry.  The atmosphere in the stands would be amazing once that rivalry gets going.

I absolutely adored them too. From Goulet to Stastnys to my favourite period with Joe Sakic and co.

My favourite era was the Stastny era, when I first really discovered the Nordiques.

Two years ago, my wife and I went to Quebec for our anniversary.  We stayed a couple of nights at a hotel in Levis.  I knew who was running the place by the name, but as soon as I saw Marion Stastny sitting behind the front desk, I knew who he was immediately.  He was a very friendly, humble guy, but spoke French with a Slovakian accent.

    • Does Bradley have the legs to execute a high press that I am reading Armas wants TFC to play? Although I am not a big fan of Delgado would he not be better suited for that role?
    • One of my main issues with Rollins is that he treats TFC with kid gloves.  This looks like he has an axe to grind.
    • You really only need a couple of players from each year-group to make the jump to top level footy in order to have a deep player pool.  If you look at the age spread of our current senior match-day 18, the ages are all over the place.  Getting 2 top players from this group is success to me.   Throw in Akinola (would jump into consideration for us right away if he signs up), and the prospects of Dunn, Okello, and Baldisimo, and I think this is a pretty damn good year.
    • I think if fans cared more about the sport and less about the business we’d be in a far better place.
    • Herdman is not going to be fired in the middle of WCQ because of poor Gold Cup results. That just doesn’t make any sense. Even if we cared and took the Gold Cup seriously, it doesn’t make sense to change managers, systems, chemistry, etc right in the middle of qualifying. Like it or not, Herdman is our manager for the 2022 WCQ cycle.
    • I hear you to a certain extent but compared to 5 years ago, we probably wouldn’t have had that many playing professionally for all of the U23s
    • Baldi, Ayo, Okello, maybe Dunn are all good prospects. Not everyone can be Davies or David.
    • It's far from clear yet whether CanPL's economic model is actually going to be sustainable as people have finally been acknowledging on here whenever the question of sub-20k salaries is mentioned. Something lower budget revolving around bus travel and student athletes using it as a summer job between May and August in a PDL sort of way is much more likely to hang in there no matter what and grow organically over time. There's a reason why junior hockey dominates numerically over minor league pro teams in Canadian context.
    • Whether or not it's a close group of CFL friends running the CPL is irrelevant to whether or not the league is also being run "on the Cheap".  Only two teams are directly linked to the CFL ownership, Hamilton and Winnipeg.  Of the two, Hamilton seems to be one of the heavier investors in the league and has won the league twice.  I'll listen to accusastions that Winnipeg might be getting run "on the cheap", with the Bombers more concerned about having a 2nd tenant for the stadium rather than winning (though I'll stand to be corrected on that as well).  Further, the organzation/ownership that seems to come up the most often in terms of being cost conscious is Pacific.  Ownership definitely seemed to be much more aggressive in having a lower salary cap initially, and maintained a smaller roster last year. Having said that, let's not be naive and think that Mitchell was fully honest in his discussion of the power dynamics at the league and ownership levels.  Young has been active since the beginning and is financing two of the teams. There's a reason Hamilton got preferential treatment in the league's first Voyager's Cup entry.
    • Am I the only one looking at this age group and thinking, besides the two stars, this is a pretty underwhelming bunch in terms of prospects?
