  • Maple Leaf Forever! - Canadian 2019 Women’s World Cup Preview Part 2: The Big Picture

The 2015 Women’s World Cup had some teams that really didn’t belong. How well we remember results like Germany 10-0 Ivory Coast, or Switzerland 10-1 Ecuador, or Cameroon 6-0 Ecuador. Ecuador was really bad. But it’s 2019, women’s soccer has developed for four years, and Ecuador didn’t qualify. Instead we have Chile, and Jamaica, and Thailand and Cameroon are back!

Fans in France will get to enjoy some hilarious blowouts, making all those Ligue 1 Féminin fans feel at home.

Usefully previewing a whole 24-team women’s soccer tournament is impossible. How’s Thailand’s depth at fullback? Any writer not actually Thai will neither know nor care. In the men’s World Cup even bad teams have a few guys playing in the Eredivisie or something so you’ll know a guy who’s seen him on DAZN or at least have a good, instinctive feel for the level? The Women’s World Cup does not play that way.

The rate of development is a testament to the value of coaching.

Or of women's soccer getting more popular and drawing from a larger sample of the population.

    • Coming on m. 90, tied 1-1 at Bilbao.
    • Apparently we do get the bye
    • FYI, at The E & C again for this one.  Bit of a break on chow and bevies for those so inclined.  Few of the usual suspects going but expecting a lighter turn out.  Just saying. Fingers and toes crossed!
    • Who are you suggesting we wouldve tried out 2 years ago?  Waterman and LM have improved and are still not CMNT quality. We tested ferreira cornelius, didic, waterman, sturing, james, zator, ZMG, LM  and heibert  ( i think fraser played CB for CMNT too) over the past few years.  Would it have been an NCAA bombito? a 16 year old LDF, JKL, Smith, stefanovic?  The only player who really was an option 2 years ago was cornelius and hes been integrated for a while now. Maybe you're implying that a guy like waterman would have a different developmental arc if he was integrated sooner?
    • At this point what’s the risk of keeping Biello for a two year contract and axing him if we get zero wins for the rest of 2024 or when a better option presents itself ?   Circle back to Nancy if he wins a second MLs cup ?
    • From the link you provided... "Tass Mourdoukoutas and Raphael Ohin both could be options to crack the squad for this game after missing out altogether last weekend with injuries." Northern Tribune article on Ohin... https://northerntribune.ca/valour-captain-raphael-ohin-very-close-to-return/ Sounds like Ohin and Tass are close but would not be surprised if they did not even make the trip to BC.  Polisi and Williams no update, so out a while longer.
    • As much as we complain about herdmans lack of tactical acumen, he actually was fine IMO.  He implemented a 3-4-3 and 3-5-2 to cover our lack of CB's, was able to switch formations from game to game and in game (mostly with a 4-4-2). He utilized aggressive pressing in mexico and a low block vs the USA. He got players to study his systems while they were in their clubs.  His high aggression play dominated belguim but a lack of individual quality and speed cost us a counter attack goal.  A borjan blunder and a long ball over miller cost us vs morocco. Both a lack of individual quality but we didnt get outplayed tactically.  The only important match thats up for debate... and when all this "JH is bad tactically" started, is the croatia game and only because he didnt play 3 midfielders. We had an out of form and still injured oso, an extremely fresh and raw kone, an old and injured hutch, an injured staq, MAK and piette out of season and fraser. Anyone who thinks the result wouldve been different if we sat larin for another midfielder is kidding themselves.  I say this to point out that, yes we want to grow and improve on JH as a coach. However, the tactical acumen of the next manager doesnt need to be astronomically better to compete at the highest level. The quality of players is much more important.  The new coach for me needs to: 1. Have a clear tactical identity for the team. 2. Be strong at recruiting duals. 3. Keep the team chemistry and motivation high   It's international footy, we cant achieve radical tactical evolution in short periods of time together. No international team does.  Is deschamps all that great tactically? Make it hard for the opponents to score and then let your world class stars be creative and score. They had 34% possession vs croatia in 2018. Simple tactics and world class players.
    • Isn't the cap on field size 7200 m2?  How does Forge always get to be over?
    • Hoping for a round 2 repeat. 😉
    • That does have to be hard for MAK to hear.  That said, he wasn't particularly lighting things up during his time at TFC so I'm not sure Herdman was wrong.  I suppose it depends in part on how the message was delivered.
