Two part question:

Sometimes a ref doesn't make an offside call when a player is off but is not apart of the play. How is this determined?

Also, if a player steps over the touchline, can he use this as a tactic to avoid an offside call.

How much contact between players is too much contact? How does a ref draw the line between allowing a player to force an opponent off the ball, and calling a foul for a hockey-style body check? (I mean, if a player leaves their feet and leads with their elbow, a la David Myrie's debut for the Union, obviously they've crossed the line, but how can a ref consistently call subtler infractions?)

In an upcoming Nats game vs. Honduras, a Honduran goes down in the box and earns a penalty. Please explain the Caribbean ref's thought process, from one ref to another, as to how the call is made.

Similar to the above offside question. As a defender in a beer league, the offside rule, strictly called as is can burn way too many calories. Chasing a guy down who the one central ref is planning on blowing dead seems crazy. I keep telling the young refs in our league to be more vocal, manage the game (blowing the whistle for a foul with no signal of which way just added to the clash of egos that happens in beer leagues). Are refs taught to be non-verbal? I'm not going to turn around to look for a raised hand (or stand there with my own up) while I'm chasing some "thinks he's fast" 20-something.

Technically if a player leaves the playing field without the referee's permission, it's a yellow card. It's never called, but it can be called if ref's want to call it. Or at least that's what I was told, the rules have probably changed since then though. However, I don't think a player being off the playing field is considered out of play. As an example, Ruud Van Nistelroy's goal in Euro 08 when there was a player of the other team (Can't remeber who) off behind the goal, injured.

I've definetely been hokey style hip checked in a game before. I was running and the other player just bowed over and put their hip into me, it was pretty spectacular.

I am not very tech savy, but like to use MP3 paelyr for podcasts and book downloads from the library.(Being retired I cannot afford to buy books from audible.com etc.) I have been using a Creative Zen V+ (4GB) for 2 years now and have listened to about 65 books on this paelyr. I am very happy with it except that it are that it crashes if I try to fast forward too much and if I use the pause feature for too long it reverts to the beginning of the track.I belong to three book clubs and most of my friends would like a simple paelyr that bookmarks easily so you can switch between books or pause easily and return to your place. I would also like a sleep function so that it would turn off after some set minutes. It must also be easy to fast forward or reverse. Do you have any suggestions as to what manufacturers we should look??

Pavel, I applaud your well touhght out and discussed touhghts on this subject but since many of us use the free downloadable audiobooks from the library, (overdrive) which are not rockbox compatable that leaves us with discussing the current retail selection. My CREATIVE Zen V Plus recently died (second to do so in 2 years) and I need a replacement that does not simply resume as Apple Ipod does. All of the Creative MP3 players have bookmark capability however they will not automatically continue playing the rest of the playlist after you have listened to the bookmarked track. I am looking for suggestions.
