    • Plata out of Toronto?

The agent for Joao Plata has tweeted that Plata is "very close" to transferring to Salt Lake City.

The translation reads: JoaoPlata10 very close to Real Salt Lake, now it is confirmed.

There is no information about what SLC is giving up to Toronto to obtain his rights but what is clear is that this would not be a loan deal, as is being suggested by Futbol Ecuador. For the time being, Toronto is denying the move.

      More as it develops.

He's little and (appears to) try hard though, which Toronto fans have always valued over actual talent.
Ok so if Plata is so overrated then why would such a well run and much more talented team than Toronto like Real Salt Lake want to pick him up? There is reason one the best teams over the past few years wants Joao Plata.

So RSL has never made a bad signing?

Plata is crap. sadly, when he finishes 2013 with 1 goal and 18 appearances before being shipped back to Ecuador you'll have long forgotten how misguided your opinion of him was.

He obviously lost a work ethic from the first to the second year.
Had a very poor start to the year, under Winter btw, so as much as it easy to thrown Mariner under the bus, Plata's underachievement was all on him.

This makes absolutely no sense. He plays a totally different position bonehead.

My comment was directed more at the chaos of who was in control/who players had to listen to. Yes Winter had a lot to blame but with all the information we've had since, it is clear that there was significant management problems and that for a young foreign player with little english skills is going to be a very difficult situation to become a serious player.

        Duane,

That is not the correct translation. The correct translation is, "JoaoPlata 10 is very close to Real Salt Lake, TODAY it is confirmed."

Language didn't seem to be a problem during the second half of his rookie season.

I think he benefitted a lot from opposition teams doing more pressing at home and leaving gaps for him to exploit. The CCL match in Dallas in 2011 was a great example. But in 2012 he had much of his space closed down (particularly vs road MLS opponents) and he simply didn't adapt well to the much closer attention, not using his teammates effectively with passes in order to open up more space after receiving return service and then generating 1 v 1s. To me, this has much more to do with player as opposed to either Winter's tactics or Mariner's attitudes.

Duane please stop commenting on your site anonymously to defend Mariner. It's cowardly.
