Covering the world’s game from a Canadian perspective, the 24th Minute has been at the forefront for Toronto FC coverage since 2008. It is the source for breaking news, analysis and all things Canadian soccer.

Mike Crampton has been an avid follower of Canadian club soccer and participant in the emergent Canadian soccer supporters scene for over a decade. When not playing, watching, or writing about the game he continues to serve the grassroots as an administrator at the local level. You can follow Mike on Twitter @BHTC_Mike

James began covering the game in 2011 after a slow process of two decades saw him gradually consumed by it. He contributes to The Shin Guardian, Waking the Red, and had a piece featured in Issue Two of The Blizzard, as well as maintaining his own site, Partially Obstructed View. He covers the rest of MLS in the hope of providing context to fans on the edge.

    • Mariner, Cochrane to return in 2013

CSN has confirmed that both Paul Mariner and Earl Cochrane will return to Toronto FC in 2013. Both men will be given clear and separate job descriptions.

Mariner will remain as the manager and will have the last call on all player signings. There will be no question as to who is responsible for the product on the pitch it will be Mariner.

Cochrane will be given the job of general manager, although the title may be different. Its important to note that general managers in MLS have a different role than they do in sports such as the NHL. In MLS a GM is responsible for managing the cap and being the point man for other league specific issues. They have very little to do with selecting players, with the exception of playing a role in determining what salary is appropriate for individual signings.

The two men have also been given an ultimatum they will be fired if TFC fails to make the playoffs at the end of the 2013 season.

A source within TFC confirmed that what CSN has learned is a fair way to put it.

Fan-fucking-tastic. Another year of agonizingly ineffective football and front office incompetence.

I guess it was expected, Anselmi wasn't going to put in the effort to find another manager. What I want to know is if Mariner and Cochrane have shown ANYTHING since taking over that warrants giving them another year. They're running this team into the ground and MLSE is giving them another year to make sure they completely fuck things up.

2013 is going to be an ugly year for TFC. Attendance is going to be shit, the football is going to be shit, and another year is going to go by without playoffs. Great work MLSE.

Settled. Not renewing for next year. I'll wait til they get fired and get tickets the year after.

This is a big 'fuck you' from Anselmi to the fanbase. Can't wait to finish top 10 in the Conference next season as well.

Hardly surprising. I guess the approach to renewals is "TFC 2013: Now with an ultimatum!"

Duane: Do we know if we'll see this in so many words in any kind of official release from the club? Or is this merely back-room scuttle-butt?

Just like the Mariner 3-year contract extension, I don't expect the club to issue a statement on such unpoplular news.

I doubt there will be anything official from the club.

Typical TFC. Commit to something before sitting back and evaluating it properly.

Tom likely too busy to deal with the team this winter, taking that easy way out.

Funny how Duane doesn't write anything on the TFC loss to the fire or the tie against Philly and then calls season seat holders that are not renewing "Consumer's" in his last turd he dropped on us. He has the balls to post this!!! At least he's writing about the team instead of calling out the non supporters. I'll give him that much. Bravo Duane Bravo!

Any news on season tickets renewal? I wondering what TFC FO has plans for season ticket holders.

On the Front Office.. Have you given up on the team? You haven't written anything about the loss and draw??? Oh Right that's not news after 6 years of the same. Given up on the team? Duane? I not blaming you if you have. More then half the team will be gone by 2013 anyway.

They are planning on squeezing every last dime out of you and hoping you by into to this "True Supporters Renew" bullshit. They've built an empire on it.

What in hell would you have me write about? The story of last week was the attendance. We've beaten the dead horse of a season to death.

i'm not buying tickets to watch this terrible product try to scrape into 5th in the East, I'll wait until they challenge for the Cup/Shield and not the playoffs. a 'true supporter' should keep buying. and i'm so glad that i'm just a fan so i don't have to do so.
there's something very broken in MLSE and i'm stunned Rogers and Bell don't want to fire 'em all just to send a message. 100% turnover for 100% failure.

Of course they're coming back! Why wouldn't they? They've brought results, stability, quality, professionalism, and have finally managed to lock the 'revolving door' that is TFC. I love Mariner and Cochrane. Our fearless leaders!

        They just killed TFC. Thanks.

i really dont envy duanne having to cover the tfc beat...it must be the worst soccer assignment on the globe. worst team in the world as rightly quoted by DK. the FO is sticking it to us again. and we as fans are between rage and apathy after 7 years of absolute garbage.
the best advice...find another team ...TFC will be garbage again next season as well until the FO is blown up and replaced by something soccer oriented...im doubtful that will happen tho.
so-find another team folks...im a 7 year fan/supporter who is tossing in the towel.
        good luck all...
        impact anyone?

I can understand that there are some people who are upset by this news but frankly, I think the club is making the right and likely only rational decision.

At this point, starting over again with a new head coach and new front office soccer staff will almost guarantee another year of poor results and fan discontent.

The club really does need some amount of stability right now. I like the idea of concentrating authority in Paul and Earl's hands and let them sink or swim. They have a big mountain to climb but it's clear that their careers depend on doing something positive so the motivation is there.

if they have another disasterous start to the 2013 season like they did this year, i'm sure the leash will be very short and the axe will drop sooner than later. My only question would be "who picks the replacements if Paul and Earl do fail"? That is still the element that is missing at TFC...this club needs a President of Soccer Operations who possesses the type of unquestionable credibility and soccer savvy that this club has lacked from day 1.

You know what boys? Let's see what one season of these two together bring. Either rise to the challenge or fail. I'll be back next season and fully expect to see a boatload of North American signings from Mariner in the off-season to make that push.
