    • Nesta expected to sign with Toronto FC

Talks between Toronto FC and former Italian international Alessandro Nesta are reported to be heating back up.

As reported on CSN earlier this season, the former AC Milan defender was previously linked with New York and had turned down an overture from the Reds. However, after the deal with the Red Bulls fell through for “personal reasons” Nesta has re-visited Toronto's offer, several player agents report.

He was spotted at tonight's game between the Impact and TFC sitting with Bernardo Corradi and Matteo Ferrari. According to an Impact insider who spoke to CSN, Nesta told them that he was at the game as a guest of Toronto.

Two player agents indicated that Nesta was highly likely to sign with TFC in the near future.

The information corresponds with information coming out of TFC that has suggested that the Reds are close to announcing a signing. Paul Mariner has publicly indicated that he expects to bolster the club's back-line prior to next Wednesday's game against FC Dallas.

Although no one with inside knowledge of TFC has confirmed that help is Nesta, the potential signing has been described as “significant.”

Actually, and in contrast with recent reports, it's been suggested that the “significant” signing is completed and that TFC is simply waiting for the ITC to come through.

It's expected that Nesta will be signed to a contract that will be structured in such a way as to not make him a Designated Player in 2012, but to graduate to that status in the latter part of the deal.

The MLS transfer window opened Wednesday and remains open until July 27.

Oh how I want to believe this, how I want to believe. I don't usually let my get carried away w/ this sorta stuff, but id Duane is reporting this, then I tend to be less skeptical. Hopefully this gets done, this would be a massive addition to TFC

Well if the team suddenly starting making moves that indicated a salary dump (like moving players for draft picks), then this could very well be true.

^ hopefully it's not an either-or situation like in the past, they have a decent young group with some experienced guys to hold it together, so let's see if they've learned from past approaches, hopefully Mr. Practical Mariner will have something to say and stick with what he's said about this being a workable, talented group that just needs some tweaks

        * also, as with all DPs, I'll reserve opinion until I've seen how Nesta would merge into MLS - it is a good sign that he's been open to the league for a while and is hopefully appreciating its unique style of play

How much is Aceval making, pretty sure his removal would be enough to sign Nesta for half a season

Dunno what to make of this. Obviously he was a great player back in the day but can he contribute now? I followed Frings so I knew he could and would (and still maintain he does although people seem to be dumping on him as of late). Can anyone speak to Nestas game over the last season?

Nesta reads the game well and is amazing on the ball. Cool calm and collected. My one concern would be he is slightly prone to injury. The year before last he was out with a bad back. He has also had trouble with his knees. If he can stay healthy, he would be an awesome addition. A true professional with pedigree and experience. He together with Thiago Silva did a great job this year against Barcelona and Lionel Messi, facing them a total of 4 times and keeping up with them for the most part. I think he still has a couple of years left in the tank, again just worried about the injuries.

Still solid WHEN he plays. His career has been littered with nagging injuries which is why I'm not a big proponent of this potential signing.

Nesta is more then solid. He has been one of the best defenders in the world for the past 10-15 years. He is still a world class defender as he has shown in the CL and Serie A this year. He is injury prone. But even at his age he is a world class defender.

The effect this signing would have on players like Henry can not really be overstated.
