• It's Called Football - Guest: Alex Campbell Jr.

Today, we're joined by Alex Campbell Jr., owner of the Victoria Highlanders, and the man who has turned over a significant portion of that ownership to the fans and local teams. We'll talk to him about the motivations behind his decision and how the business model will work and what he thinks about the idea of a national league and if regional community invested teams are a solution.

We'll also talk about Canada's lack of interest/effort in the St. Kitts game, what to expect out of the next round of qualifying and (in lieu of the recent Torsten Frings panic) discuss if MLS winter loans are a good or bad thing for the league.

The archived show is now up

Our next show will be next Monday

I know you're bringing in a new Vancouver writer in December, but will they be joining you in the podcasts? While I'm sure it wouldn't always be possible, it would be nice if the podcasts also started to incorporate a more "Canadian" and less "TFC" feel to them.

I hope you asked what stadium they'll be using in 2013 since the Victoria city council has slated Royal Athletic Park to be baseball only in that year. Hopefully that decision doesn't go through.

Rycroft you are a douche. And it's about time you gave this site some Vancouver coverage. I blame you personally.

Based on this description, http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Douche#Slang_uses, it sounds like you've described yourself, Monsieur anonymous troll. Maybe you should go take a shower or something. haha

Just listened to the show...I'm usually quite supportive of the show and all the work you all do in trying to get CNS out to the masses..........but why the disdain for the MLS Cup??? You're all about supporting local football...well Toronto is in the MLS so therefore, support the final!!! Ben, with the snickering, you sounded like a Eurosnob.....

ya - Rycroft is a Euro snob. Good one.

Maybe he's snickering because he's seen the TV numbers here in year's past. Reality check: MLS fans don't care about MLS the league. They care about their team and theirs only. TV numbers support that theory.

Hi Ben. In future, please post that link you sent me in these updates, and that will solve the problem for me and others. Thanks. I enjoyed the podcast. Key points: - willingness to let members vote on entry into other leagues, in the future, and - discussing the use of USL Pro to build pro soccer in Canada one team at a time if need be.

the links are on the side of the front page - not sure why he needs to post them.

I've had problems here and there in the past. I just go there. Demanding people do something, anything, on a free site is a bit ridiculous.

        my two cents

Hey this is an old thread by now, but just thought I'd put down a late comment. I think the lack of "community connected-ness" alluded to by Dwayne isn't just a Canadian/NA soccer issues, but is also highly responsible for the lack of local team support seem across the spectrum of minor pro and semi-pro sports played across the country.

If the Highlanders model proves successful and creates the sought after community by-in, I applauder their innovation. And even if it turn's out to be a cheep marketing ploy, born of desperation and in an attempt to stave of creditors, I will still only be care if it doesn't work.

        good luck to them!
