    Talk about burying the lead.

Toronto FC fans got a surprise yesterday and not one that they would have been looking forward to. That Champions League spot that many were looking forward to is not just delayed until next February -- it's been taken away completely. The news was almost hidden in a release announcing the extension of the Canadian Championship to include the winner of the PLSQ and League1 Ontario.

So, to re-cap, the CSA got one thing right and one thing very wrong.

Let's start with the wrong. Appreciating the fact that a lot of people in this country love it when Toronto gets screwed, there is no denying that they did, in fact, get screwed here. Yes, there was a bit of an issue to fix -- CONCACAF's change in format made it a long wait for the qualifying team -- but the CSA chose quite possibly the least sporting solution available to them. TFC won the Voyageurs Cup on the field and the CONCACAF spot that went with it should have stayed with them.  A year where the Cup did not have a CCL spot would not have been the end of the world. In fact, it may have given more opportunity to young Canadians to play in the competition as the teams would have very likely rotated (as an aside, the CSA also added a Canadian quota for starters this year -- each team will need to start three Canucks each game.

The CSA did provide a slight advantage by allowing TFC to host the one game playoff. Obviously, if TFC wins the 2017 Voyageurs Cup they do not need to play itself for the berth.

Unfair or not, it's done now and the Reds will need to get down to the business of repeating as champions if the CCL is to make a long awaited return to T.O.

For the D3 level teams the long wait to get a shot at the Canadian Championship is almost over. The specific format of the 2018 Cup has not been released yet (hopefully because they are waiting to add a few more teams in a, say, new league...), but whatever it is it will include at least two D3 teams. It won't include the Canadian PDL teams. The likely reason? The CSA wants those teams to play in Canadian leagues and this might be the incentive to get them to make that choice on their own.

I've also heard the senior men's amateur national champions will be added as well at some point.

At the very least it will be eye opening I think for the guys who have talked about being better than every pro team for 20 years.

    • Get him in with the senior program young.  If Herdman can bring a mediocre player like Campagna (who now appears to be playing in 3rd division Finland). He’s eligible for USA and Serbia and if we’re being honest, if it doesn’t work out and he’s not good enough for Canada long term, then he’s probably not likely going to be good enough for Usa or Serbia as well.  It’s not like Tomori with England who would have 50 caps for us and a World Cup appearance.
    • Interview with Lazar Stefanovic with a Serbian blog (article is in English): https://serbianfootballscout.medium.com/sons-of-serbia-lazar-stefanović-toronto-fc-456400526750 He was asked if he’d ever represent Serbia, and he replied that he’s currently focused on Canada, though he’s in touch with their federation, as well as ours as the US, where he was born. Not really any revealing information and it’s insanely early for him to decide on his future but I feel like we’re usually on the losing end of the “I’m currently focused on X federation”, so that was nice to see. Apparently he’s a red star fan and follows Serbian sports, but that might be more the interviewer asking him leading questions about his ties with Serbia.
    • You don't play your B team at the Copa (if you're Canada).  Big tournament experience is the most valuable thing our players need, and it's impossible to replicate in friendlies. Even the Gold Cup isn't on this level. It's one of the reasons the US and Mexico are fine but not actual contenders at the WC.
    • You're right, we don't need the drama.  I'm sure they'll create some drama situation on their own as we get closer to Copa
    • Yeah, that is pretty surprising.  Didn’t get that impression at all watching the tough teams.  Good stuff though.
    • And who's in their depths against other opponents? There's only a few. My point came about Shaffelburg being g a super sub, being able to run at defenders when chasing a game. I never mentioned him starting. 8 games barely any minutes and has 2 goals in big games. Not friendlies. Where guys like @Bigandyare putting Davies at LB or Buchanan on the bench to put Millar on at LW when he's been performing best  at LWB for Preston. I get it's just opinions, but make it make sense.
    • This is starting to feel more like an Anti- 3atb tirade as opposed to davies best position.  I agree with @WestHamCanadianinOxford. Davies at leftback is still going to play hero ball. Theres more risk of us getting countered on davies side while hes way up the field with a slower LCB.  Does a world class leftback help us more than playing davies LWB or LW where he may not be elite but his production is elite within concacaf?  Why do zinchenko and alaba ( i know hes now a CB but he played CM for austria while he was a lb) play other positions than LB for their nations?
    • One of the biggest reasons we wanted this tournament is to give our players more experience against good teams outside our region for the 2026 World Cup. So yeah, I don't think they will bench our best players for the one game against a team that played in the last World Cup.
    • Yeah zero chance we play a B team at any point in this tournament.
    • And assuming everyone in the group loses to Argentina, you have 3 fairly even teams fighting it out for runner up.  Canada, Chile and Peru could easily all end up 1-1-1 or 1-2-0 or maybe two of the 3 teams tie each other and beat the other.  Regardless, there is a chance that goal differential will matter.  Putting out our B squad against Argentina’s A squad could almost single handily put us out in regards to a potential future tiebreak.  Let alone, the potential embarrassment with all eyes on the opening game.
