  • Cities confirmed for Canadian 2026 bid

    Duane Rollins

We now know the six Canadian stadiums and cities that are biding to host games in the 2026 World Cup.

    They are:

    Toronto’s BMO Field

    Montreal’s Olympic Stadium

    Vancouver’s BC Place

    Edmonton’s Olympic Stadium

    Regina’s Mosaic Stadium

    Ottawa’s TD Place

There’s a not a lot of surprise on the list. Calgary declined to pursue the bid further, which may be bad news for their Canadian Premier League bid (as getting a stadium built is key to it and failing to bid now suggests that they are not yet sure if it’s going to happen).

With Canada set to get six games in total there is a certain logic to suggest that each city is likely to get a single game. Although the caveat to that is that Olympic Stadium will need serious work to be World Cup ready.

Another issue is that only one stadium – It’s almost certain that all of the five stadiums will need to put in temporary grass.

Of course none of this will matter if Morocco wins the bid.

    • Your skepticism is based on what? How many Canadians are coaching in the MLS? Or in Europe? Asia? South America?
    • Europe would be ideal, but Serie A offers a lot of high level matches and environments even without Europe.  The way its lining up, looks like they may have the most representation in Europe next year with 6 as well.  So Napoli don't even have to make Champions League to play more matches vs Champions League level opponents. In Europe, the last 4-5 years, Lille have only played maybe 3-4 teams that make the top 10 in Serie A.  (Chelsea, Valencia, Seville, maybe Ajax in a good year).
    • This but also in his case my one concern, and I do acknowledge its speculation, is that while he genuinely wants to move up, he isn't necessarily willing to make the sacrifices in terms of working conditions to make that happen. When podcasts speak on it what they often say is ''oh, but he is really comfortable at Forge, built something great and he really gets to realise his vision with the team, it would really take the right project and condition to make him leave'' which... honestly that's now how things work, not just in Soccer but in life in general. If you are good at your job then eventually your past accomplishments will get you more leaway in your current position and you'll get to work with more autonomy and/or with things being more tailored to your taste, or at least that's how it is in a healthy organization. Eventually you'll be considered for promotions but if you do get it then you can't expect your past accomplishments to have as much weight in how things will be in your new position, because they were the reason you got the position in the first place. You'll have to prove yourself again if you want the same kind of cushy situation. IF (once again acknowledging this is speculation), Smyrniotis won't leave Forge unless he gets at least a comparable kind of leeway and/or the club's project aligns with his tastes to a comparable level then it's pretty unlikely he will go anywhere any time soon. While we don't know what happened behind the scenes it would explain why Smyrniotis was strongly considered for the Impact before Lossada (my opinion on the subject at the time, posted in another thread, boiled down to ''if his French is ok then why not?'') but was never in the picture after him. His profile might have been interesting but anything I know of Olivier Renard (MTL's sporting director) leads me to think that if Bobby said he would want the same kind of leeway then at Forge would have led to him being quickly written off as a possibility for the job for the foreseeable future. I could buy this as factor if we had only been talking of Smyrniotis getting a promotion for, say, two or three years but five? At this stage I am somewhat sceptic this is the only factor...
    • That's keeps her from being a Ballon D'or contender.  Everything else in her game is high level and getting better.  She can out run more physical but slower defenders and out muscles the quicker, smaller ones.  She also has a good head for the game with some craft and plays with an edgy streak at times.  And finally, she makes her team better:  I don't think she was selected for the Gold Cup, for whatever reason, and Colombia crashed out to the USA in the QFs.  If she is in Paris, she will be a handful for us.
    • Well he apparently did interview for the CF Montreal Jon.
    • As long as it stays in Wpg then Princess Auto is the only venue.
    • Cornelius get the start again at home to Vasteras in the Swedish League.
    • He has nothing left to prove in the CPL, it's time to conquer newer and bigger challenges
    • I've heard that indeed there is a sale pending. I thought it was crap when Manual Veth broke the news, but apparently the Bombers are in discussions currently with a potential buyer. No idea what the vision of this new potential ownership is and if they intend to keep the team at Princess Auto. I can't divulge my source, but it's a pretty good one. I admit a potential purchase is not a purchase, and nothing may come of this.
    • 😅 Oi.  Too close, way to close.  Celtic and Ali on to The Cup final.  League to be determined first.
